Petraroia Deli

I stopped into Petraroia Deli on a recent weekday and was immediately charmed by this classic…read moreItalian-style deli tucked into a beautiful old red-brick building. From the moment you see the elegant vintage sign and bright red double doors, you know you're in for something authentic. The interior feels warm and welcoming, with a big, clear menu board that makes ordering easy. They have a solid selection of hot and cold sandwiches, breakfast options, and coffee. I went with one of their specials -- it looked like a chicken cutlet or eggplant variation with fresh greens (possibly arugula), roasted red peppers or similar, and what appeared to be a touch of egg or cheese. Whatever it was, it was excellent. The sandwich came on a perfect crusty Italian roll -- the bread was fresh with a great chew and slight crisp on the outside. The fillings were generous, flavorful, and well-balanced. The greens added a nice peppery bite that cut through the richness of the protein and any sauces. It was one of those sandwiches where every bite tastes just as good as the last. Service was friendly and efficient (the guy behind the counter was busy but still took time to make sure everything was right). The place has that old-school deli atmosphere mixed with modern touches -- exactly what you want when you're craving a quality sandwich. If you're in the area and looking for a no-nonsense, delicious deli sandwich made with care, Petraroia Deli is worth a visit. I'll definitely be back to try more from the hot sandwich list (the Porchetta and Chicken Cordon Bleu both caught my eye). Pro tip: Check their hours -- they appear to be closed on Mondays. *Highly recommend the fried artichoke sandwich. .

Generous sandwiches on amazing bread. Easy parking out front. Nice staff and a very clean place!read more

ITALIAN COLD CUT GRINDER: -- medium size -- soft bread that is thick and holds up to the meat and dressing easily -- I like that it does NOT have that crunchy hard exterior crust -- I added more Italian dressing from our side salad to get it nice and wet style -- in hindsight I wish I had asked to add additional meats to make it even more diverse and interesting -- another sandwich shop that has gone the way of the Do-do bird used to pile on the meat...I do not need that, but I do like a very diverse Italian grinder with about 4-5 different meats on it -- the pruzitini (black pepper heavy per the net) was as the sandwich maker said "not too black pepper" once everything assembled...I do not like black pepper too much -- cheesecakes and waffle cone cheesecakes looked okay but I am a Basque, ricotta or Chicago cheesecake fan -- cannoli appeared fresh via firm shell but looked light on choc chips, so I vetoed RATING = A NARDELLI's ROOTBEER (yellow label): -- lighter carbonation -- medium sweet or tad more -- not sarsaparilla tasting unfortunately -- slightly old skool taste more like IBC RATING = A- Dad liked his SAUSAGE and PEPPERS grinder. SMALL SIDE SALAD: -- good mix of chopped mixed bell peppers -- romaine and leaf lettuce it appeared -- pepperoncini, shroom, tomatoes -- legit Italian oily dressing RATING = A- STAFF polite and efficient.

The Torrington location is great. Stands out amid sadder versions of Stop and Shops and Big Y stores in the area. Service is terrific. Selection ample. Feels like I'm "getting something" for my investment. Just a cautionary tale: For all of the new shelving, floor tiles, paint, and displays, there comes a price. And just because it's merchandised expertly - it doesn't mean it's worth the value it's priced at. IE: Hellman's mayo, is Hellman's mayo at any store. I love the store. I love that they have an array of Central NY brands (Hoffman's, State Fair/Speedie, etc). But I always make two lists: what are the wants from Market 32 and what are center-store grocery needs that can be purchased for 20% less elsewhere.

I also appreciate that they carry a good variety of brands, like the Boar's Head meats and Cabot cheese I picked up. Checkout lines can get a bit busy at peak times but they move at a decent pace and the store is clean and organized. Prices are reasonable for the area and they often have good sales. Overall, a solid grocery store that makes weekly shopping pretty convenient.
