They photograph items to look like they are significantly bigger than they are and leave dimensions out of the description. They sell knock off "world market" goods as "art nouveau" with no mention that it says WORLD MARKET in GIANT LETTERS across the bottom of the item misleading you to think it's antique. They don't post crisp images so you cannot zoom in and see something is painted and not a textured print. Deceptive descriptions and misinformation, misleading images that hide damage. We've been customer's of Rusty's for several years. Lately, they have set the pickup times at ridiculously low time frames. My husband won one item that was 7$ at the Sache sale. He asked them if they could take it to the Forney warehouse (which they've done in the past for a small fee) it was worth it those times because it added up to well over 7$. In the text response, they rudely replied wanting their 10$ fee for a 7$ item. Seriously? A 7 DOLLAR ITEM. He couldn't get to Sache today due to having such a small pickup window and work. So frustrated, and considering the situation he told them to keep his 8$ cause you know they needed that extra on top of the 7$ and the customer service person texting has an I-phone and (LOVED) what he said about keeping his 8$. Then they admitted they LOVED the fact they get to keep our money too, because it cost US MORE THAN IT WAS WORTH for 7$. It's the damned principle that as a greedy business you had to be unprofessional over 7$. We will be taking our business elsewhere and for other's you have been warned. These folks only care about taking your money, nothing else. If I could rate you as a BIG FAT ZERO I WOULD! Update: The business manager DID reach out to us and profusely apologized and made it right. For this, I am very appreciative. I hope this resolves how business people address their customers in the future. I am very disappointed to have to leave this review after doing business with Rusty's Auction for over a year. On July 2, I consigned a collectible coin with them, trusting that the company would handle it properly. Unfortunately, more than 90 days have passed and I still have not received the $102 owed to me. What makes this situation especially frustrating is that when I purchased an item from them, payment was expected immediately after the auction closed. I held up my end of the transaction, but the same standard has not been applied to me as a seller. I was even contacted by someone/owner representing the company who assured me that my payment would be sent on a specific date -- yet a month later, nothing has arrived. While the dollar amount is not huge, it is the principle that matters. This is money rightfully owed, and I believe other sellers deserve to be aware of this experience before consigning with this company. read more

After wasting 2 weeks of my time, she finally looked at photos and said my $8,000+ worth of furniture (including a $700 bed slept in ONE night and a $2,000 bed used less than 6 months, plus $4,000 in furniture) had 'not enough value' and wasn't worth her time. When I pointed out I was only asking $2,000 for everything, she said that wasn't 'enough value to her.' Then why did she reach out in the first place? Why waste 2 weeks of a disabled person's time when she could have looked at photos on day one? Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. I am a retired individual that runs a small business, refurbishing vintage collectible dolls. I have purchased from hundreds of auction houses and Rusty by Design has been very good. I have been very pleased with the quality of the dolls I have purchased from them and their employees willingness to help when it's needed. The one major drawback in doing business with Rusty by Design, is if you require shipping. use a third-party shipper who is extremely overpriced and arrogant to boot. I charge a third to ship the same items to my customers and I still have a profit. so if I would highly recommend them. And if you have a problem, don't get your feathers in an uproar just communicate. read more

This company fails on both ends of estate sales- both for the people they are selling for and the buyers purchasing at their sales. they cost sellers sales in the mishmash way they handle things and restrict the buyer pool by limited pick up options and poor business practices. From the buyer perspective as others have posted, the pick ups are chaotic and they are rude. they also absolutely DO NOT respond to emails and any billing issues and apparently do not keep adequate records for sales. Their system double billed my card and they apparently do not reconcile sales or billings as they did not refund the double billing, I had to dispute t with my credit card company. It was obvious and any company with a shred of competency and ethics would have seen it and corrected it themselves. I have seen other reviews where they have taken months to pay people they are selling for- this company has serious issues and I would avoid at all costs. I feel sorry for the people who blunder into hiring them. read more

They auctioned off my storage unit as I had moved out of town and I can only assume they kept my most valuable items to sell themselves on eBay where they can get a lot more money for items as nearly a dozen of my most valuable items were not even listed for sale. I contacted their sleazeball warehouse manager Caleb and he said it is up to the owners discretion as to what is valuable. Total scam artists. Conceptually, this service and process looks and feels like a great opportunity to consign furniture and other home items you no longer need or have room for but unfortunately, it did not work out that way for me. To be fair, the movers themselves were helpful and professional and Laura, my salesperson was responsive and explained the process well. The website and layout also looked very good. However, I was very disappointed with the net return I will receive. I consigned a number of pieces (over 15) of furniture from Room and Board, Crate and Barrel, Pier 1 and West Elm to name a few of the more name brands. I estimated the value at original sale price of approximately $20,000. Some items were older than others, but all were in either great or very good condition and Laura felt like all would sell at a fair market price. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but from what I read; furniture tends to net a 20-30% of original value assuming it is in good condition. I was informed that my net return (minus moving fees and commissions) would be $276. Yes, you read it right. Two hundred and seventy-six dollars. Less than the value of one of the least expensive items on the list. I was referred to Rusty by my realtor. I purchased from this group once then gave them a second chance. You know the saying .... Fool me Once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. So I give myself one star also for being stupid and giving a second chance. The first time there was a 30 Minute window to pick up purchased items. My time was the last time slot. I arrived in the last 7 minutes after being in horrible traffic to pick up one small item. The person who was handling the auction was walking to her car and drove up as I got out of my car. Another person arrived at the same time I did. Neither of us were able to pick up items and they were considered forfeited. Luckily it was a small amount. Second time I purchased and has a 1 hour window. I scheduled for early. Picked up items only to find out computer was locked and they wouldn't jump through the hoops to get ownership transferred to me. Now I have a heavy paperweight that technically works.... But can't be used. Both times, the card I used was compromised within a day of my using it with them. I rarely use this card, and I suppose it could be a coincidence but after reading BBB complaints, there seems to be a trend of less than stellar practices. There are plenty of honest auction houses around. Use a different one. read more

Very disappointed with the outcome of the estate sale of my parents home. Part of it was my fault for not reading the contract more carefully, but Shane should have explained the process to me which he didn't at all. Things are sold in lots which l was not expecting and l didn't set reserves which should have been explained to me beforehand. Lots of my parents' things sold way way way below value. I take solace in the fact that they got less money also. Then, they let someone buy 2000 dollars worth of things at auction with a bad credit card and then they didn't show up with cash to pay for their things. They offered to take the unsold things to their consignment store and l declined. I have since sold some of it for close to a thousand dollars. I was promised my check in under 20 business days after auction closing and had to ask where it was after the time period. To top it off, a brand new large bottle of Dawn dish detergent and a huge box of dishwasher tablets disappeared from under the kitchen sink. No family members took it and they were the only ones besides us in that house. The thing that upsets me most of all is that l feel like l let my mom and dad down. That l just let their things, that they had bought and collected over the years, just be practically be given away. A lifetime of memories just gone for practically nothing. I am sorry I trusted them with my parents' estate. I would never recommend this business. read more

This is one efficient auction house. I have bought from auctions where it has literally taken hours to get my goods and that can be completely frustrating, I did not know what to expect my first time buying from this auction. Pick up time was scheduled to begin at noon and this place being in Forney I did not know what exactly what time I would arrive. Turns out traffic flowed smoothly from Dallas and so I arrived about 30 minutes early. No worries, I explored the town a little bit. When I got to the auction I was greeted by an entire team ready to assist me. My invoice was taken care of at the auctions end online so now I just needed to let them know I was there and they would bring me my purchases. I did just that and in less than 3 minutes a kind gentleman came bringing me my purchase. It was a delightful experience and I would not hesitate to purchase from them again as the item was exactly as presented in their online catalog description and pictures. read more

I just bought a collectible sewing machine from Rusty By Design. In the pictures the foot controller was placed right in front of a part of the machine that was missing. The foot controller was in other areas or completely absent in all of the other pictures. But it was very strategically placed to cover the part of the machine that was damaged. A replacement for the damaged part costs at least $150. They said it was just a coincidence. Then why was the controller not covering any other part of the machine and had been moved in all of the other photos? Please see my photos below to show how the machine was advertised, and how the machine looked in real life. There is a vital part missing and it is what makes that particular machine so collectible. I asked what would they do if I didn't pay and left the machine there. They said they would charge my credit card on file that I registered with. I believe they were deceitful in the advertising of this machine. Having a piece missing greatly devalues the machine. read more

It was a relief not to have to deal with doing that ourselves and well worth the money. We also made a nice chunk of change on the sale. Win-win! I had a Horrible experience and will never purchase anything from Rusty by Design - If I could, I would give them zero starts. I bought from them a few items total value of $ 450. I was charged to my credit card the same day the total amount plus their fees, but I did not receive any of the items I purchased at their auction. Rustic by Design did not email, text, give or send me the amount for shipping. I called the auction, an the woman I talked to responded that they had tossed/thrown away all my items. This is how they left my house when they said they were all done: multiple damaged walls; stinky trash from their fast food meals; shattered glass from an auction item they broke; left every single light on; and lastly, they still had items that had been paid for but not picked up and were left at my house...my Housekeeper had to help one lady load 2 extremely heavy chairs in her car. I won a bid but did not see on the site that it was one day only pickup. Bad on me. My fault. On another part it says monday/thursdays pickup but thats only if you arrange to have it moved to their gallery, which isn't clear. Having different shipping/pickup info on the site (hibid) is confusing. I had a whole conversation with Autumn about picking up my item. Never does she say "oh by the way, you have to make arrangements by the end of day or you lose your item and your money." I email her today (one day after) and she says "sorry, pickup was yesterday. Very very very unprofessional. Dishonest and lack the knowledge to correctly describe items properly to profit from sale. They will promise you all kinds of service and when the time comes they retract or say oh well, too bad! If you hire them to sell your items be ready to literally "jaw-drop" in disbelief of the pennies on the dollar your stuff sells for. The have no or little customer/buyer base so things sell really cheap. They rarely return a call and don't do what they promise to do. They picked up 4 uhaul truck loads from our closing vintage shop and only posted around 100 items! They kept promising to post more but after 3 to 5weeks of anxiously waiting they all of a sudden decide our items aren't sellable? Then why did they come to our shop and take them? They assured us our stuff would be inventoried, tagged, safely stored in their warehouse but it was never inventoried, never tagged and stored in a random storage facility that they demand we come to pick it up when they never posted 95% of it! Claimed they make more money on items they buy outright. Well, if you don't post it on auction, you don't make money! They pick up your stuff and expect people to donate what doesn't sell. I'm sure they expected us to donate our entire store? Umm...no! Keesha is the rep that was supposed to be helping us. She is totally unprofessional and has little experience when it comes to describing items and recognizing designers/makers. It's like pulling teeth trying to get her to return a call or follow thru with her promises. She is dishonest and overwhelmed claiming to have sooo much to do she is overloaded. Well, hire some help! I will say, the underpaid, young, movers that lack proper training in the worst way, are very very hard working and quick when they are stacking you're items from bottom to too of uhaul in a huge mound that has no option to shift and crash to the back of the truck upon take off. They wrap nothing, do not tie anything down, and only show up on time 1 out of 8 scheduled times. They failed to inventory so I had to do it. However, they were actually hard working, pleasant guys. I feel bad for them and can only imagine what they put up with. They also took items that were set aside with huge signs on them stating 'do not take to auction! Not for sale!" But they were tryingvto rush to get to their next gig and took them by mistake. They have yet to be returned. We have received 1 chk and promised several more only to be disappointed each trip to the mailbox. The bookkeeper only works on Mondays I'm the weeks keep going on by and no chks!! I recently had Rusty by Design handle an estate sale of many of my belongings and furniture. It was not an outright disaster but so much of it has left a bad taste in my mouth for how this company does business. They are more compartmentalized than the CIA and just like that covert entity, there is a different and separate group of people for each part of the sale and because they don't overlap it's like dealing with 5 different companies each with plausible deniability of the actions of the other. Plus getting hold of anyone is hard as they tend to let calls go to voicemail during the process so if anything is going wrong it will just go wrong and they'll "fix" it later. First of all was the contract. Laura came over to tell me about the process and their compensation. I understood that they were taking 35% of proceeds which is normal or even a little better. What was not made clear to me at that meeting was that if the 35% is less than $3500, they would take $3500!! Buyer beware--read the contract before signing it because I didn't (yes, I'm stupid and trusting) and ended up with only $1500 from the sale of half of my entire household. I realize it's my fault but especially when they knew they were dealing with a senior citizen in a sad situation they should have a policy of making sure you know what you're signing. It felt an awful lot like a swindle and I urge you to consider what type of people these are. Not transparent that's for sure. The second thing that happened, and this is sad and maddening, is that they damaged a nice bedroom suite bought by a friend of mine when they delivered it. The site was bought new at Nebraska Furniture by me 2 1/2 years earlier including a very expensive mattress/box springs. Only I had slept on it and I'm pretty small. When they delivered to my friend the mattress (which had always been in a zipped protector) was ripped and soaking wet. The wood of a bed frame side was damaged and broken, hardware was missing to put the bed together, and knobs to the dresser were broken off. They had left it all in a leaky warehouse for the night before delivery where it all got rained on. When my friend complained, they blamed the damage, etc. on me. He said she said was their go-to way of handling the problem. My friend has lodged a complaint with the BBB and received about $100 from Rusty by Design but that doesn't fix the problem completely and their failure to be accountable for the actions of their movers is disgusting. They have buyers that bid on every auction on a regular basis. So this also keeps the end amount of payment low. One Buyer told me when he came to pick up my living room suite that he was irritated that he'd gotten into a bidding war over it. Lol that was another friend of mine who lost out, tho. I should have just sold to them directly. Obviously since I'm moving I won't even need another estate sales company in the DFW area and that is a relief because I'm not sure anyone is any better than these half-baked yahoos but if you ever need to auction things off--go to the BBB, and sites like Yelp before you hire. Don't depend on the goodness of their hearts because if they can fool you, they will. Not transparent and darn uncaring is how I'd sum them up, especially Rusty by Design. Stupid name. Ive purchased from Rusty by Design for at least a year and until the past couples months have been very happy. Over the past couple of months items have not had detailed pictures of the products and have had cracks in wood or broken pieces. In addition, going to pick up they never have enough help and the line is ridiculous to pick up your items. Also, which is not their fault, they have a bunch of bidders who pay WAY more than items are worth lately. To me it seems that someone is running the bids up and have actually seen the same bidders going high on items that used to sell at 1/2 the price that they do now. I truly believe someone in the company is running the bids up to increase the bottom line for the company and inexperienced bidders are buying things well over their value. read more

Great online auctions. This review is based on being a buyer. As a seller, consignor,or person liquidating an estate - well, that isn't something I have too much experience with them on. Great prices, great products - they don't really accept junk stuff to auction. For the most part, their descriptions are very accurate compared to other auction houses. They aren't perfect, but compared to most they are really good. For example, other auctions you can buy a jug of oil, or heck, expensive perfume, and when you pick it up it is 99% empty. They don't bother with that. They don't sell half full bottles, and if they do - they sell it as a pretty bottle, not as perfume. I have some amazing, beautiful furniture finds from their auctions and I love them. If I were the seller though I would cry at letting things go that cheap. Some auctions though get crazy, and if I were the seller I would be happy. Pickup can be a pain. It is smoothest out of their gallery, but when on a location at an estate, it can be painful. If you get shipping they use the local UPS store and any complaints I have had in regards to shipping was with the UPS store, not Rusty's. Overall, great auction house, great place, nice people, Autumn is the best! read more

I previously issued a bad rating to these people but after talking with them in person, they corrected what I considered to be a wrong and I am now happy and back doing business with them. We have done these auctions before and it was good. Today we had to go to Forney for pick up. First the address for their warehouse was not accurate---it was literally a pasture. After several calls we were told a different address to go to. We Purchased a runner rug, which when they finally found it, they were using it for customers to walk on. I think the price was ran up like some other customers have said. I paid more than I wanted for the Rug but was really upset they were using it. They were disorganized, didn't know where stuff was to pick up. The kid loading the cabinet we purchased almost broke the glass he was in such a hurry. Very disappointed this time around. read more

I participated in Rusty's Memorial Day auction I dropped two dubs of Fostoria crystal and one tub of Raggedy Ann collectibles, along with a handwritten inventory of all the items. There were 50 + pieces of Fostoria and 19 pieces of Raggedy Ann. The online auction was conducted from May 19-23, which meant a very short window, therefore, it was imperitive ot have the items displayed well. On the 19th, I went in to view my ads. There were 7 pieces missing from the Raggedy Ann collection and one of items that was there, was broken. I have included a set of New mugs (4). There were only 3 displayed and one was broken. Other pieces were missing. There was a set of 4 signed prints. I had them in protective vinyl sleeves. Only one was displayed in the ad, with no mention of there being 4. The other items were just "missing". It was difficult to count the pieces of Fostoria in the ad, although I know for sure one piece was missing, a double candlestick-the most expensive piece in the collection. Where was it? I called Rusty's to find out where my other items were. I was told by a rude lady to call another phone # the next morning and speak to Angela. I did and Angela said she would investigate the issue of my missing pieces and call back. I asked her to better display what she did have. Her response was that people were encouraged to come in and look at the lots. I told her that not everyone could do that and they the majority of bidders relied on pics and description for lot info. And if both were incorrect or incomplete, we both would be jeopardizing our earnings potential. I didn't hear back from her, although she changed the description on the Raggedy Ann items to say that the prints were framed, not the case. This is not what I asked her to change it to. I asked her to show all 4. No other changes were made. I tried to get her back on the p hone but was unable. Finally, Saturday, i was able to get the first lady back on the phone. She rudely reminded me that I was supposed to call Angela. I told her I had but Angela had not gotten back to me and the sale only had one more day and I had issues. I explained the missing items. Her explanation was that she personally had uncrated my items and apparently had found these other items unsalable, therefore donated. These items she was referring to were the most valuable items of both lots. I didn't believe her. I believe they broke the other items or kept them for another sale or for themselves. These items were definitely not included in this sale. I was lied to, cheated out of potential money due to my items not being properly displayed and/or merchandised and treated very poorly. I have bought many, many items through Rusty's auctions and have been pleased. This will be the last time I ever allow them to sale items for me. We both could have benefited from better handling of these items. read more

FANTASTIC!! I dont understand the negative reviews..Rusty By Design was AMAZING doing my moms on-line estate sale auction. Everything they told me to expect was 100% accurate. The employees showed up at the exact minute they said, and those guys got to WORK. They put things into lots, which help in the liquidation aspect. I was expecting maybe max 5k when all was said and done..try quadrupling that, and then some! The pictures they painstakingly photographed and the descriptions were great. The auction ran great, and pick up was so well organized. They brought out lots according to time slots..no one even entered the home unless they picked up furniture. I will recommend this to ANYONE dealing with the death of a loved one, or just the need to clear a house for sale. This company was a Godsend. The employees compassionate, friendly, educated in their business..just a joy to work with. read more

I had a great initial meeting with them. Was told they sell approximately 98% of the items on the online auction and that the items not sold were donated and I would receive a receipt of the donation for tax purposes. Not so. We donated household items, and many pieces of antique and large furniture that was in good shape including a king size bedroom suite, a queen size bedroom suite, a sectional we bought last year, etc. Anyway, for all of our items they "sold" we are due approximately $2000. that's fine, we understand auctions are there for folks to get items at a large discount in most cases, however, we knew we would be able to use the donation receipt to help offset the loss. I was told today that they never said that and the items are donated in bulk to charity. So... Rusty's gets the tax break for their company and the customer gets nothing.
