Russell is not only one of the last true surf shops in Newport Beach, but it should be considered a historic surfing landmark. Surfing has shaped a culture around the world, and there is a strong case that Newport is the epicenter and genesis of that culture. (The Echo Beach) And Russell Surfboards is one of the pillars (along with the Froghouse) in surfing culture. I just can't recommend supporting this shop enough. When you go inside, you instantly realize this is a surf shop. They survived all this time by selling surfboards, not clothing like Jacks. When clothing brands like Billabong, Quiksilver, etc started renting out "surf shops," it ruined the authentic soulfulness of a surf shop. JP did such a great job caring the torch and Russell would be proud to see the way he kept the spirit of the shop alive. This place is awesome. Mike & Elliot are great dudes who really know their stuff and wont steer you wrong. I'm serious they talked me out of buying a board that wasn't the right fit a few months back which really says alot about this shop and the guys. I've picked up a couple russell boards now and they stand out in a packed quiver, their boards have a unique old school style that can't be beat and more importantly are just fun lively boards. Their used boards are really reasonably priced and you can get smoking deals on boards that are legitimate 1 of 1 pieces of art made by hand. Don't buy a $1,000 almond when you can get a Russell that has way more style and cool history behind it for less! read more

I had one of their vintage surfboard from the early 70's that I wanted to learn more about. It was passed down to me by a family member. I called the shop and Jeff was incredibly kind and said to come on down and he will check it out. I brought the board down and JP (the owner) and Jeff told me all about the board I had and the amazing history of the brand. They answered all of my questions and treated me like family. This place has been serving me when I want a custom board since about 1972. It's an institution. When you have a handmade Russell stick - you got it going on. I ordered a 10'6" Russell single fin in Ferrari/Russell red and it's by far the most perfect machine I own - you get what you pay for and then some with Russell. I have been around Russel surfboards since i was a small lad forced into involuntary bondage by my father at the boat yard, Russel surfboards has been a constant fixture in newport beach since before i was born;having a lot of shared history and knowledge of newport. I recently purchased a used surfboard that was in need of a few ding repairs and a leash. It's a Russell board and since I hit up Newport Beach at least once a year I took it in. JP was very helpful and gave me a good price. Chatted with him for a bit about surfing and he gave me a few tips and some history on my board. When I went back to pick up the board I was helped by George. Very friendly as well. Wasn't a pushy sellsman but was very informative. Definitely will buy a board from them when the time comes. I recommend going there for you surfing needs. Very true to the sport and doesn't have fluff merchandise like different surf brand boardshorts, t-shirts, or the like. A huge drawback for me though is when I bought a leash and the next day when I went to return it unused they told me no. Maybe I'm blind but I didn't see any signs indicating a no return policy. I used to live down south and Russell surfboards was my go to for boards. I now live in Santa Cruz and they are still my go to for boards! There isn't many places left that handle all of the board building process in house. There is no better feeling than going to a shop and buying a board from someone who has had a hand in the entire board building process. No guessing who shaped, glassed, sanded or polished your board! All the guys in the shop have a plethora of board and surf knowledge. Great shop and the guys are really nice. Bought a rocket fish here, beautifully shaped board, absolutely love the design of it. However the glass job is very weak. Every time I take it out it gets dinged from nothing and I have to get it repaired, even though I take great care of it. I've even riding for over 20 years and never had a board with a glass job this weak. When I told them about it and explained it, I was given one small free repair and then pretty much told oh well. So needless to say I will not be buying a board from them again and the only reason I'm positing this is so other people are aware and don't waste $700 like I did. If they fix the glassing problem, they are beautifully shaped and designed boards. Other than that JP is great and super helpful. read more

Great guys, always pumped to talk surf, boards and trips. The boards are awesome, looking to eventually swap most of my boards out for various Russell's. Just road a friends "Magic Marker" epoxy and it was INSANE! Made me a believer in eps boards. Probably the coolest thing is that they are a local core shop. They make their own boards, all shapes and sizes too. Boards are hand shaped.... most by legendary shapers, even the standard ones that you would walk in and buy. Prices are really good, probably great even (again they are hand shaped). They sell all stuff surfboards, and while they seem to be expanding (now selling leashes, stomp pads AND wetsuits!) they haven't got lost buy selling the same clothing you see everywhere, in a SURF shop. Pros: Hand shaped boards made locally by big name shapers that sell for way less than hand shapes can go for. Prices for custom boards and options is great. Great service. Excellent board repairs. Ran by a cool group of guys. There's just something about a hand shaped board that makes me never want to buy the stamped out boards that are everywhere else. Russell's is the place to go get boards in Orange County! All the guys that work there are very knowledgeable when it comes to board design and the waves in the local area! They've been doing business since 1967 so they definitely know their stuff. I got this amazing board called the Magic Marker and it does anything you want! Super fast and loose but can still hold in bigger stuff. They have amazing resin work and detail on their mid-lengths and longboards. These guys are the real deal and they won't steal all your money since they can beat any price you would find at Jack's or HSS or a big chain like that. Shaka! Mahalo! Fer Sure! read more

I've been considering purchasing a fun board for my son but wanted to rent one before dropping $800. I called on Friday 8/4 and was told that they have "several" that they rent out. I offered to reserve it to ensure it was available when we showed up. I was told there was no need to reserve they will be there. On Sunday, 8/6 when my son and husband went in to pick up they were told they only have 1 and it's already out.
