Old colorful and new The Russell Library is really two libraries in one. The first part was built with money donated by Frances Russell in honor of her hubby Sam Russell. It opened as a library in 1875 but the building was actually built in 1834 and was originally used by a church. Mrs Russell had the building extensively renovated into a sort of Roman Gothic style. The building had a lot of changes over the years but in 1983 a huge addition was added and the library suddenly became a whole lot larger. The architects did a great job in blending everything together and the building is lovely indeed. The inside has all kinds of very colorful and cool stained glass windows and lovely staircases and doors. A modern library but one that still retains the charm of it's past. The library is large enough to have a fine selection of books, both new and old as well as the usual computers and wifi. Lots of cool programs are always going on all year long for both kids and adults. A very cool library for a lot of reasons. A great place to get a book, admire the old building or perhaps even meet someone very special.

This library is our usual destination any time we need new books for leisure, school, or for if we need to fax something. The library is kept very clean and they have the best children's section I have ever seen. The kids love all the computers and play areas, I love the book variety and how friendly the librarians are toward the kids. The library itself is very large and it's super easy to get lost and immersed. There are separate areas for teens, books on tape, new releases, adults, research materials, and computers. Faxing is a little tricky the first time but I asked one of the girls at the desk and she was very nice to walk me through it and stay with me until I was done. Faxing does cost $1 per page so I only use it when I need to but it's nice that it's there. I've been to libraries in Naugatuck, Waterbury, and Wolcott and this one is by far the most modern, clean, and friendly one.

Stained glass windows are probably leftover from one of the older portions of the library that actually was originally a church.

I frequent this library more than any other due to its proximity to my house. It's a pretty small…read morelibrary. But for the size it has an impressive DVD and music collection. You can find a lot of foreign and Criterion films and they are in good condition because they are hardly ever checked out. The CDs are an eclectic mix with indie as well as mainstream selections. The drawback to this library is that well, it's just hard to explain. Here's a list of some things that have happened to me recently: 1) A lady yelled obscenities at me for parking. Granted, she pulled in behind me but she was really unhappy that I parked in what she must have decided was "her" parking spot. 2) I held the door for a guy who then slowed down, didn't make any effort to take the door, and then stopped halfway through the doorway. 3.) The circulation clerk asked me if the classic movie I was checking out was a DVD or an audiobook. That's just shocking for a few different reasons. The building itself is attractive from the outside. It's probably one of the most visually interesting libraries I've seen in the state. Parking is ample but inconvenient. There is a small parking lot in front of the building that is usually filled. There are now a few spots on the street but you'll have a short walk, and a large parking lot in the back that is also a bit of a walk. There is also no reference librarian here. So if you want to put something on hold you'll just be directed to the catalog and told to do it yourself. But the DVD and music collections are awesome! That's reason enough to keep me going back.

There were plenty of parking and the library was spacious and had an open layout. When you first walk in, the children section is to the right. They also had so many toys for the kids; from a toy train table, kitchen sets, cash register, dollhouse, and more. They had a wide array of books too. My family and I spent about an hour in there and loved it. It was pretty busy since it's a weekend and cold out; other families had the same plans as us. Overall, it's definitely a nice library.
