This has happened to me on multiple occasions. It's deeply frustrating for people who work insane hours to take the time to drive over (with plenty of time to spare), only to be told in a very brusque manner that they aren't accepting any more cars. It should be noted that other locations don't seem to have this problem- it seems to be a quirk of workplace culture specific to this particular location.

An hour later (two hours total) they charged me $375--almost 2 1/2 hours of labor, and stated there was more work involved than anticipated. I'm happy to pay a good mechanic a high labor rate, but not thrilled to pay 2 1/2 hours of labor for an hour of work.

Their prices are fair; they are totally professional; they go out of their way to make sure repairs are only those needed. I'm a car guy, but I don't mess with air conditioning. The air conditioning in my Jeep failed suddenly and through sheer good fortune I landed here. Despite no appointment, they managed to squeeze me in during the recent heat wave. In a matter of minutes they diagnosed my problem and gave me a written estimate to repair. But the part needed wasn't immediately available so I would need to return the next business day. No problem. As a car guy, I was watching the ebb and flow of the waiting area very closely. What I saw was nothing but fair and honest dealing. No "upselling". No attempts to badger customers into unneeded repairs. In a couple of cases I saw them actually "down-sell" by persuading the customer that all they needed at the time was a less expensive fix. Honesty such as this is uncommon in the auto repair business. We hear stories and witness predatory practices in this industry. Last week my 2012 Subaru Forrester…read morestarted making nasty noises -- which sounded like bad brakes to me based on a car I used to drive that needed a brake job. I stopped at Essex Auto on my way into Raquet's Edge and they were able to look at my car and diagnosis the problem within 45 minutes. Yes it was a brake thing (bummer). They gave me a quote and got the car right into a bay for the work. The one downside was that I needed to be in Colchester for an appointment at 2 PM but the brakes were not going to be done until 4:30. They have a customer shuttle so I asked if they could drive me to Colchester and I'd have a friend bring me back. They did not have anyone available to drive the shuttle but they did call a cab for me and they did have the care done at the price they quoted when I returned. This week they sent me a 'thank you' $20 certificate toward any new service. The brakes work. The cost was on par with another quote from Oil N Go. The place is clean, nice bathroom, big screen TV, easy place to wait if you have to and close to places to walk to and eat also. I'll visit them again (hopefully won't have to!)
