We were extremely disappointed and hurt by the actions of the Dogs Trust in Ballymena…read more We went to visit the centre in January of this year. We had been planning on getting a dog for a while and because of their reputation, we decided that the Dogs Trust would be a good place to start. We went out to the courtyard and immediately fell in love with a pug cross called Clarence. We registered an interest in Clarence as we knew he was the perfect dog for us. We left the centre content that we were hopefully on the way to welcoming a gorgeous dog into our lives. Clarence was a new dog to the centre and therefore he was being kept under observation for a week. Throughout this week, we were told that the centre would get in touch with us which did NOT happen. Instead, we had to call them throughout the week to get an update on the progress of the dog and when we would be able to come and see him again. On the Friday of that week, after calling nearly every day, we were called to say that we could go and see Clarence on the Saturday Afternoon. The impression that was given was that if we were the first people in to the centre, we would be the first to be able to reserve Clarence. We tried to reserve Clarence over the phone but reservations were "first come, first served" at the centre. We were excited as we knew we would be able to attend as soon as the centre opened and therefore, we would be able to reserve there and then. We visited the centre on the Saturday and were invited to walk Clarence. We bonded with him so well and it felt like we had the perfect dog and he would be the best companion for us. About half an hour into our time with Clarence and just as we were deciding to take him back in to the centre and reserve him, a man approached us rudely and asked if we were walking Clarence. He told us that he had reserved him. We were obviously shocked and confused because we were not told that he had been reserved and that as we were first into the centre that day, we would have priority over reservation of Clarence. Nevertheless, we took Clarence inside as he was getting tired. We were informed that we were not first on the list to reserve Clarence and the staff had no compassion with us and the man put down the deposit for Clarence under our nose. The man didn't even walk Clarence or bond with him and so we suspect that he had a meeting with Clarence during the time he was apparently under "Observation." We left the centre feeling disheartened and upset at our experience. We got back into the car and cried as our hopes had been built up to be torn down in a matter of seconds. Though we admire the work that the trust does, the attitude and demeanour of the staff from start to finish deterred us from continuing our search with the Dogs Trust. As dog lovers, we support the cause of rehoming dogs who are mistreated but it's ironic for a charitable organisation to mistreat people in this way. We decided to end our search with the Dogs Trust and decided to search with a breeder instead and I am glad to say we are welcoming a baby pug into our home very soon. It was an absolute waste of time going to the Dogs Trust to get a dog and we would not recommend the service to anyone unless they start to do their jobs right. Though it may be more expensive, a private breeder won't lead you on and you can gain a companion without the stress and upset that the Dogs Trust cause.

Some dogs are long term or have medical problems and are not available for adoption but they also have lots of dogs available over the year. All adoptees are vetted and have the opportunity to visit the dogs and take them for walks or trial before adoption. You can also go and take the dogs out for a walk if you don't have the resources to have a pet of your own.
