This estate could warent several different entires because it delivers on so many fronts but let me break it down for you. It's a hotel, restaurant, estate, golf course, wedding venue, camping site and it probably even doubles up as a speed boat and dishwasher. As a hotel it is set in quite stunning grounds with scenerey to die for. The building is grandeur and everything about it screams class. What an ideal get away retreat. The rooms are divine and even have Molton Brown goodies packed inside. Now we're talking. The restaurant doesn't falter either. Equiste food but at equiste prices it has to be said. You wouldn't expect anything less though. They even have a Yorkshire hereos menu with locally sourced meats and produce. You can grab a bar menu if money is tighter and that offers superb value. I like to make my own sandwich from the list of fantastic ingredients. It'll make Subway weep for a year. If you are into your golf then this a superior golf course and as a wedding venue it is pretty much ideal in my eyes, although again it all comes at a hefty price. If only I could live like this forever. Alas for now I'll have to stick to Wetherspoons on curry night.

Dower House Hotel - Meeting Room

    Dower House Hotel

I have been staying here regularly, and previously written a review with various subsequent edits,…read moreso I thought it time to start again from fresh. A pleasant , clean and well run hotel owned by Ashdale Hotels Group , but marketed under the 'Best Western' banner. Staff have always been polite and helpful. Rooms vary in size but are clean and well appointed, Ive been favoured with large ones recently , one had a four poster. Dinner is a three course affair for £19.95 and two for £16.95. Several choices, and the quality is first class and the food well presented. Last night I went fishy and had a hot smoked mackerel for starters and sea bass fillets for main. Breakfast is also first class, and the hot food served direct from the kitchen rather than in horrendous buffet style I will just have to forgive the one occasion when they forgot to service my room for the second night. Hotel is handy for Knaresborough touristy things like the castle, the river and Mother Shiptons cave. Edit , 11th January 2012. Staying two nights again. Diisaster when I checked in as it was explained a boiler had broken down, so there would be no hot water or heating until during next day I was offered the chance to relocate to Grants Hotel (same hotel group) in nearby Harrogate (Ive stayed there before qv my report), or use the gym/leisure club section if I wanted a shower where a different boiler supplied hot water. I decided to stay put, and managed a wet shave this morning by boiling the kettle . Anyway all is restored now so I'll enjoy the excellent shower in my room tomorrow morning. Dinner this evening was of same standard as before. I had a salmon fishcake for starter, and a really tasty Confit Leg of Duck for main. But I was the only diner until shortly before I finished, a couple came in, so it wa sall a bit quiet with little atmosphere. Fortunately from my seat I could see a group of leotarded ladies having a Pilates class in the leisure center as the room was at right angles to my window !! I will leave my rating as 4 star, as I though they handled the adversity of the boiler breakdown rather well (oh and they gave me a fan heater for my room also)

'Bond End House' between 1750 and 1910, and 'the Dower House' from approximately 1911. The house is situated in Bond End in the area of Knaresborough known as 'Tentergate'. In medieval times, this was the area where the bondsmen or serfs of the town lived - hence the name Bond End. Records have been tracked back in the Slingsby Archives to 1541, when a clear entry has been found of a lease from "Thomas Slingsby of Scriven to Richard Slater and Margaret his wife of 'Lylley Hall', barn and kiln in the area of Tentergate". The Slingsbys are an old well-known Yorkshire family and at one period they were one of the largest landowning families in the north of England. Sir William Slingsby discovered the 'Tewitt Well' in Harrogate in 1571. Sir Henry Slingsby was a prominent Royalist during the Civil War and was e

The rooms are spacious, the safe is so helpful. Checking in was a breeze. There were a few people in front of us and the manager called for back up and two extra staff showed up. All in all we only waited for maybe three minutes. Totally professional. We got breakfast included. It's a buffet from 7-10. Normally I don't think this kind of food but this buffet is amazing. They ah e the best eggs and full English. The staff was totally open to get you sometime extra if you asked. Again super professional. The bar is beautiful and very convenient to meet people, which worked because we had a lot of family to meet. The rooms were clean, great views and roomy. The cleaning staff was flexible and would work to clean around when we were gone. It really made us feel at home. I can't suggest this hotel more. I was here for a week long stay so opted with the breakfast included package. Breakfast can get real busy and is an average affair. I enjoyed the espresso based drinks and spring water bottles. The other stuff is mainly eggs and other breakfast items selection. The plates and hot plates can get really hot so watch out. The amenities are what one expects from such a place with an exception of a laundry facility (one can have clothes laundered though). The room itself was quiet and larger than I expected. My interaction was limited with top marks for housekeeping and middling for front desk. The elevator can be challenge as one was out of order so the other two being very busy during a holiday weekend. I wouldn't mind staying here at a similar rate if in the area.

Of course it is a hotel so you can rest your weary head there but it also has a fine eating emporium. Oh yes it does in pantomime style action. This is grand dining with fresh, seasonal and local produce all whipped into some luscious creations. Try the oak roasted salmon fishcakes to start with. They almost melt in the mouth. For a main I went for some mushroom fun (ghi). Sorry bad pun alert! The steaks are cooked to perfection though or you can stick to chicken, duck or whatever takes your fancy. Excellent puddings as to be expected and a totally extravagant dining experience all round. Don't expect it to come cheap, it doesn't but we all need a total blow out sometimes in our lives. We salute you.

BUT, Trev arranged suprise trip here in June. We only stayed one night, but what a night. Our room was one of the new ones, happily not new room, just newly decorated, had lots of old features, was clean, tidy and had everything we needed. We booked in and went out exploring for a while, came back and got a bottle of house wine, 2 glasses and a cooler to take up to the room while we got ready for dinner. Dinner was first class. The food was well prepared, well served and there was plently of it. I had the best king prawns I have ever had followed by duck which was cooked to perfection. Trev has sea bass ( I think) and that was delicious too. We don't really do desserts, but folk around us were smacking their lips at theirs, so they must be good too. The wine was a little on the expensive side and nowt flash, but not bad enought to really complain about. We will defo be back as soon as possible, for longer hopefully, and we have recommended it to all our mates, especially those who like a bit of Jazz with their dinner.... nice
