Whenever we are passing through St. James Ruby's is always a treat we look forward to. My family has been stopping at Ruby's for about 6 decades! I was there on a Saturday evening after dinner in July. I hadn't been in a few years. I got a scoop of strawberry cheesecake ice cream on a sugar cone. It's creamy and delicious. Their selection goes a little beyond the basic flavors and it looks like they have some fancy coffee and decorated cones to move with the times. I just said out loud "this ice cream is fucking fantastic," and realized that anything that makes me talk to myself in public likely deserves a review. This place is always staffed by and filled with teens (who offer wonderful service), and tastes like it was made by someone with generations and generations of ice cream experience. It always tastes fresh (no granules of ice to chomp into in a batch that's been sitting for too long), and is perfectly rich and creamy. It's never too soft, and doesn't have any of that weird mouthfeel you get in ice creams that are loaded with stabilizers (central dairy). Each flavor I've had has had the perfect amounts of mix-ins. While nothing is too fanciful or over-the-top, each scoop still tastes like classic ice cream perfection. As an added bonus, I was impressed by two signs hanging on the door. One announcing that they would close for the season on October 31st, and another letting customers know if they come by in costume on Halloween they'll get free ice cream. We were driving past St. James when the Mrs. said, "I want ice cream." Happy wife, happy life, right? So we stopped at Ruby's. Nothing special. Just another ice cream shop in another strip mall in another small town. Not a lot of choices, and half of those were something they called "Mixture surprise" which was basically a couple of unidentified flavors just haphazardly thrown together. Seriously, they did this with like 4-6 buckets. It would have been nice to have a better selection of real flavors. The most unpleasant surprise was the price. I'm guessing that's why they didn't have a menu board up. We both ordered one flavor in a dish rather than a cone. When the total came up it was nearly $12! I've never been charged double digits for 2 ice creams anywhere, ever. Trying to play it cool for the Mrs., I didn't say a word, but when we got outside the door, she turned to me and said, "I thought we were buying ice cream, not gold...." Long story short, the product and service were average, and the prices really left a bad taste in my mouth. Next time, I'll just keep on truckin' to Rolla or Cuba.... read more

A discovery made quite by accident on a trip from Massachusetts to Arkansas will now become a must-have stop each time I make the 1,200 mile journey. Ruby's is a delightfully delicious find and what has been a favorite of many for decades is now one of mine. Ruby's ice cream is good every time. It's old school - maybe 15 or 20 flavors of traditional ice cream, and soft serve. It's just north of 44 at the St. James exit. The old Route 66! Usually we get there in the middle of a summer afternoon and it's about 99 degrees out. There's one bench in the shade, still it's worth it. Always a steady stream of customers of the local sort as you enjoy your cone, and a plus, an excellent view of the O'Reilly's Auto Parts store across the parking lot! I always make it a point to stop at Ruby's when I pass by on my way driving across the country. It is by far some of the best homemade ice cream I've had and always worth the stop. Not being aware they'd moved, first stopped in at the place that is now occupying the old Ruby's building and they were borderline hostile (that's being generous) when we asked where Ruby's was. Ruby's was good, I mean really good. I had the chocolate banana kiddie cup ($2.50) and my husband had a double kiddie cup: Rocky Road & Black Walnut ($3.50 I think). I had real chunks of banana in mine and the chocolate was a perfect balance between milk and dark. The service was good. I did notice the frozen yogurt place around the corner, Yokidoki, now sells real ice cream from a creamery in Jefferson City. read more

I've gone to St. James a couple times a year my entire life and it's family tradition we stop every time and get ice cream when Ruby's is open! My favorite is strawberry cheesecake! They're generous with the amount they give and even though it may cost a little more its definitely worth it! Highly recommend a stop if you're going through St. James!! read more

Whenever our family takes a road trip to Branson, MO, we always stop at Ruby's for an ice cream treat. The employees are very nice and friendly. The shop is small and the ice cream is absolutely WONDERFUL!!! My brother-in-law would always stop at Ruby's with his fishing buddies when they went down to the lake to drown some worms - HA! The first time that my sister-in-law went with us on a Branson Road Trip we took her to Ruby's. She said "so this is the Ruby's that I've heard so much about." You know it's a good place when fishermen talk more about the ice cream than "the one that got away!!"
