Problem was they would charge you an arm and a leg for crappy ingredients, the type that look like the sandwich ingredients in a Spar that appear to have been sitting in the counter for the last decade which simply don't live up to the companies persona of 'Quality fresh food'. They are a chain shop and in Dublin you can't move for tripping over them. I have heard some rumbling of some of the southern stores going into administration and I've also read about a few of their branches being closed because they failed health and safety inspections. O'Briens idea of a sandwich is to throw a flimsy piece of ham between barely there low quality white squishy bread, lob on a bit of coleslaw and then throw some hunky dorys on the side. There is such a great choice of other sandwich shops in Belfast, I fail to see why anyone would opt for sub-par food in O'Briens.

However when we called into O'Briens, we met Patrick whose enthusiasm and chat tempted us to try a sandwich and soup combo, instead of a trip to a well known fast food purveyor. It was a bit later in the evening, and Patrick expertly advised me to have a ciabatta instead of the demi baguette I had initially chose (an issue of freshness). I found that to be very refreshing, that this guy actually cared for about our dining experience. I'm not a sandwich having kind of guy usually, but the service was first class and the food was quite good too, I may call again. If I do, it will be thanks to Patrick and the staff!

Crowded at lunchtime on a weekday, we managed to nab a table when another couple finished their meal. It's super busy and inside, it's full of gourmet delights. Anyone who thinks Northern Ireland doesn't have good good needs to come here. Smoked salmon on toasted bread, hard Irish cheese, crunchy baguette, sliced turkey, even chilli sauce and something called "black butter." Oh, and wine. You can't have a midday snack without wine, right? Much/most of the food here is quite local (the wine is Spanish) and the staff are helpful. Check the "sandwich board" out front for specials. The Spanish Board for £25 would be my choice! [Review 1893 of 2024 - 871 in United Kingdom - 22915 overall]

An Italian section with lots of varieties of pastas and sauces. Cookies from Italy and limoncello! There is a very small Mexican section, which in my opinion was pretty darn good for being in Ireland! They had tortillas, various dry chilies and hot sauces. Lots of cookies, candies, jams and jelly's and a very large tea selection. The cheese case and deli were loaded with so many choices, it was hard to choose! You can order food and eat at tables that are just outside the front of the store. A definite recommend but if you're a foodie, be prepared to be dazzled!

Not for them an olive focaccia, you are more likely to get a corned beef on plain sandwich bread but it'll only cost you about 3 quid with a drink, and that makes a difference when you are working in town. OK, so you might be greeted with a quick 'what's yours' but at lunchtime there's no time for pleasantries, there'll be a queue forming behind you!

And on a cold winters day, and lets face it folks this is norn iron, we have plenty of em, the soup is delicious and comforting! Then for the days we are 'watching ourselves' the salad bar is a must! There's loads to choose from and the coleslaw and potatoe salad are fab! I'd eat a tub of each on their own! This wee gem really does have it all and they're not afraid to fit as much as they can into your sarni's-to my delight. Its cheap, delicious and I cannot wait to go back!!

After years of going in that has changed for the first time. As with everything these days the prices have crept up, especially in terms of the lunch specials. OK, that's to be expected these days. But there a 'meal deal' in there now for £12 or so! Not long ago that was a basic restaurant price, the specials are now around the £5 mark and gone is the awesome £3. I could live with that, but I got the club sandwich. It was tiny and bland.... With a club you expect the double layers... not in this case... just the 2 rounds of bread, and they were very poorly filled at that. I'll definitely be back... I won't give up on a stalwart like this after 1 bad experience... but with the hike in prices there needs to be an understanding there be a hike... and certainly not a drop, in delivery!

As soon as I walked in I was asked 'what I would like?' and to be honest I hadn't even worked that out in my head yet so I just blurted out Americanno! I like the prompt sty;e of the staff in here - no messing about - gimmie your order! The coffee was great - very strong which is just what I needed before a meeting. I even got myself a wee pecan slice as there was a lonely one left in a basket just staring at me at the counter. So I had to, you know yourself! Anyway, it's a big old thumbs up from me for Arthur's and who knows it might even get that extra star when I sit in!

It's an art to watch, with the final assembling taking place in front of your very eyes. There is no processed crap in this joint, except maybe the curry which is too tasty to bother caring! Don't bother going if you are rushing, especially at 'lunch time' and I wouldn't recommend sitting in, it's like an old school canteen out the back (there was a dead spider in the corner behind me last time) Quality food, worth the wait.

I've never sat in at Reuben's but I hear good things, the outside seats are usually occupied by the city smokers. This is a big favourite of local office workers and recently some big corporates have moved in so expect a bit of a queue if you're visiting between 12 and 2pm. The staff do their best to keep everything moving but I suppose it says a lot about the quality of the food when people are happy to queue out the door to get their mitts on a sandwich. I always go for a chorizo and goats cheese Panini with a coffee to give me that afternoon boost - you can get all this for around £6 - can't go wrong. Keep an eye on the specials board and make sure you ask what the soup of the day is - they sometimes have a curveball in there that might just take your fancy.
