Despite being not the best time of year or day, we hooked about 15 fish, got four salmon in the boat, and even caught and kept one delicious coho salmon! The boat is a marvel. Great tech, comfortable, and even has a bathroom. It is a smaller boat, our party of six was pretty close when we were all outside the cabin. But that is exactly what we were looking for as part of our family reunion. A.J. kept things moving with 2-3 poles in the water at all times. Located in the Edmonds Marina, Ruby D Charters was super convenient to get to. We booked a private charter with four people, two adults and two kids. My fishing skills are non-existent so I can use all the help I can get. We left a little before 10 am during the peak pink salmon season. The boat is super comfortable. It's equipped with a bathroom, which is a must for anything longer than a couple hours. The cabin is heated and they even had water available for us. Captain Dale and his son were super kind and patient in explaining everything to the two curious kids in our group. The fishing started out pretty quiet, but a nearby charter shared some info about a hot spot, to which we quickly went to. Within thirty minutes, we all had our limits. It was so much fun to see the kids catching their first ever salmon. As we headed back to the marina, Dale's son was amazing and obliged the kids' wish to do some fast boat driving. Visitors to the Olympic Peninsula, we definitely wanted to go salmon fishing. It didn't take much research to find Ruby D Charters. Online booking was easy, and a telephone query was graciously answered. A lot of captains name their boats after their life partners. "Ruby" is, indeed, Captain Dale's canine partner! The boat itself is immaculately clean and well-kept, even carries a defibrillator on board. Before we got underway, Captain Dale briefed us about the vessel and safety precautions, even explaining how to use the radio and provide nautical coordinates in case of a "mayday." This serious attention to important details certainly elicits security and comfort. As an added bonus, Ruby D has a heated cabin - especially convenient for grey, chilly, drizzly days in the Seattle area. About the actual fishing: Coho salmon were plentiful, and by hour five of the six hour charter, the limit of two fish per person was caught. Beautiful fish, happy fisher-people. Captain Dale and his first mate, Vic, baited and cast all the lines with ease and precision. Every time a fish bit, Captain Dale excitedly exclaimed "Somebody get the fish!" Then, he skillfully and calmly explained how to reel it in, never taking the rod away from anyone. Once in the boat, a fish was not left to suffer. So, Captain Dale is also very humane. My husband booked this charter weeks ahead of time to take out our daughter and her husband for a day of LingCod and flounder fishing. while we visited the Seattle area. When we arrived we had no trouble locating Captain Dale at the marina. He was clean, smiling, and very personable. We went aboard and got situated where he proceeded to give us a safety briefing. He honestly advised us that the fishing hadn't been the best over the last few trips. He would do everything in his power to see that we wouldn't be disappointed. We assured him that we were there for the fun, as well as the fish! We immediately set out to catch bait fish. I could tell immediately by his clear instructions and obvious patience with some of our less experienced group that it was going to be a great day! After the baitfish we went a short distance to begin our search for LingCod. As Captain Dale readied our gear, he patiently answered our many questions as he continued to give us clear and concise instructions. We had our poles in the water for about 15 minutes when one of our group had the first serious bite. Our son-in-law spent about 10 minutes reeling in the perfect sized keeper! (See photo.) We took plenty of pictures before going back at it. We were situated not far from a whale tour and had decided to take a short detour to see if we could see any whales before moving on to the flounder area. Just as we started to reel in the gear, my husband got a strike. He enjoyed the next 20 minute fight with a huge 44" LingCod. (See photo.) it was too big to keep, so after another round of pics, we tossed it back. We then followed the whale tour for a few minutes and were able to see a whale breach several times before migrating to the flounder area. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get any clear pictures, but the sight was amazing! At the flounder area, all of our party were able to catch our limit! They weren't huge, but still keepers, and very fun to catch! He cleaned and bagged our catch before we left. Overall it was a fantastic day and well worth the time and money! We would definitely do it again. I highly recommend fishing with Captain Dale. He is a great captain with a lot of experience and ample patience. read more

He was on top of everything, so we just had to haul the fish in, which we did. Dale was able to handle everyone (including a teen, a tween and two geeky dads) and make it fun for everyone. Took my boyfriend for his birthday on the 6 hour charter on Captain Dale's boat. It was my first time fishing and it was so much fun! We caught a bunch of flounder and a few rockfish (that we had to throw back in), searched for lingcod with no luck but it was still lots of fun. A friend was in town and he wanted to go fishing for ling cod. We have never gone fishing before in our lives, so we called a couple of charter boats and Captain Dale was very responsive. He was also excellent at managing our expectations, citing that ling cod may be difficult to catch during the time we wanted to go out. Armed with that knowledge and happy with the fact that he named his boat after his pooch, we booked with Captain Dale and prepared for a fun outing on the boat. The weather on the day of our trip seemed a bit ominous, but we wore proper clothing and brought snacks for the boat. We headed out to catch bait fish for the ling cod, which was an adventure in itself because of the unexpected winds. After we caught about 15 bait fish, we headed out to one of the ling cod spots, but the weather got even worse. We set the lines, but after about 5 minutes Dale said that it would not work given the wind and quickly gave us two options to maximize our allotted time. We decided to try to catch flounder instead, so Dale motored us to a protected inlet where the wind wasn't as strong and we ended up catching about 10 flounder. Overall, the experience was fantastic and we really enjoyed the outing with Captain Dale. We highly recommend giving him a call if you are looking for charter boats! read more

Captain Dale is the man. His directions were easy to follow and he had everything prepared before we arrived. Once we arrived, he gave a brief overview of safety, answered any questions and then we were under way. We had lines in the water within about 30 minutes and lucky for us, the fish were biting. One reason I really like Captain Dale is that he is flexible to your needs. He will let you dismount the pole, drop the sinker, and set the hook, whereas some captains set it all for you and then let you reel it in afterwards. All of his equipment was what I'd expect from a professional--very high grade, nice stuff. My husband and I are from New York City and we have always dreamed about fishing in West Coast and finally our dream came true with Captain Dale (Ruby D charter)!! We stayed in Seattle and enjoyed 20-25 minute drive up to Edmonds WA early in the morning (it was such a peaceful drive - something we can't find in NYC) to have our morning 6-hr fishing. We met up with Dale at the deck and he explained everything we needed to know before we headed out to ocean. First off, this boat has EVERYTHING but 4K TV lol - Nice & warm coffee, water, drinks, cooler, many different fishing poles, nice seats, toilet, cleanness-wise it was the top notch. We first did a flounder fishing to use it as a lingcod fishing bait and it was just so much fun!!! Dale knew exactly where to go to catch what. My hubby has been fishing since he was young but it was my first time fishing so the fact I was able to catch fish constantly it was all but Dale's help. He explained how to use the fishing pole and he was absolutely patient and kind. Dale drove the boat around to switch to different fish fishing and we even caught a GIGANTIC lingcod + rock fish. I thought only professional fisherman would catch those fish but hey, with Captain Dale we are all semi professional ;) What I really want to stress is though is not the number of fish we caught (which was a lot) but the overall experience we gladly had with captain Dale which was heavily influenced by convenient location, humorous/kind/knowledgeable/patient captain and his nice fishing gear/clean boat. At the end of a day this is for fun and for experience -you don't want to deal with nasty boat and nasty captain even if you catch tons of fish(we paid for this!) I can't appreciate captain Dale enough what he had done for us for the entire 6 hr fishing and this experience is too good to keep it for myself - I usually do not leave any review unless I am extremely amazed. My experience with captain Dale was beyond amazing and I highly recommend to ANYONE with confidence. Are you so sick of work/daily routine? Wanna do something different? A buddy and I went salmon fishing about a month ago with Captain Dale, we arrived at the marina and were able to find Captain Dale exactly where he said to. Fortunately a third guy had booked a trip also, so that guaranteed us 6 hours of fishing if we didn't limit out first. We left the dock on time and he got us fishing as soon as he got us to our spot. Captain Dale answered all of our questions and kept things light-hearted. He worked hard to get us on fish and kept trying different things when the bite stopped. We landed several fish, and lost several. Captain Dale kept things light hearted and never got upset when mistakes were made. We joked around constantly and for the day, the three of us fishing all ended up catching our limit, and had a great time!
