I took my kids out of swim class And stopped going. Almost 3 years later (because it is the only gym in our area) I decided to give it another chance, the signs were smaller and I tried to ignore them, so that my kids would have a place to swim in the winter, but the Israel flag in EVERY room and the constant propaganda everywhere made it impossible. Their mission statement of "We create a space of belonging, where everyone feels respected and appreciated for who they are." Is a lie. This statement does not include, Palestinians or anyone who supports equal rights and liberation. Israel is currently the leading cause of childhood mortality in the world.

I was excited to teach my kids to swim. That only went so far, they were not as excited to learn from mom, lol. The group lessons at the Riverdale Y were great. They worked with them on their comfort level, the instructors were very patient and it did the trick pretty quickly. I highly recommend ‍ There are many programs here at the Y that are great! The pool for lap or recreational swim, the gym and classes for working out, the after school programs, Camp Twelve Trails, music lessons, theatre, other youth and senior programs, and so much more. This is really a great Y. The staff is also very friendly and helpful

One particular senior here was adamantly unfriendly but kept pestering me with her 'philosophy in life' while bragging of her many political connections in Washington Heights. I would strongly suggest choosing another senior center if in this area of Upper Manhattan.

She offers classes that are inclusive, accessible and yet challenging. Her system of signing up for classes in advance (at least 12 hours before the class starts) is great! It really works! It holds you accountable for scheduling when you will exercise, showing up and not coming up with excuses of why not to come. This has been one of the key factors to my success at NuYu. The studio is amazing- it's a beautiful space. All the equipment is provided (weights, yoga mats, towels etc) so all you have to do is show up. There is even coffee and tea! During Covid, she started live-streaming the classes. She has done an incredible job making this work. I get a great workout from home and feel connected to the teachers and fellow students, even though we aren't in person together. The teachers are terrific. They really get to know you and can work with any physical issue you may have. Everyone who comes is valued. It really is a warm and caring environment. I can't recommend it enough! I love NuYu!

They're a community-based nonprofit that has served East Harlem for over 50 years. I am involved with LSA through their New Friends committee, which aims to raise money for their summer trips program, but I've also had the opportunity to meet many of the children serviced by the organization, and I can honestly say that have a large positive impact on the community. They take a multipronged approach to assisting the community, and, as listed on their website, offer visiting nurse care; therapy for children at risk for developmental delays; adult basic education and English language classes; after-school tutoring; family support services that keep children safe and out of foster care; summer trips that get families out of the city for one-day vacations; and food from our pantry. All told, I can't say enough positive things about them. If you have the opportunity to support them, be it through their fundraising or volunteer events, I absolute recommend that you take action.
