Just a shout out to the Riverdale Y and their group swimming lessons. I was lifeguard and swimming instructor for many years in my teens and early 20's. I was excited to teach my kids to swim. That only went so far, they were not as excited to learn from mom, lol. The group lessons at the Riverdale Y were great. They worked with them on their comfort level, the instructors were very patient and it did the trick pretty quickly. I highly recommend ‍ There are many programs here at the Y that are great! The pool for lap or recreational swim, the gym and classes for working out, the after school programs, Camp Twelve Trails, music lessons, theatre, other youth and senior programs, and so much more. We love the Y! We have done so many things here including afterschool, which was great. A lot or activities for kids to pick from and the staff is fantastic. We also did the swim team (great coach) and theater as well. Theater for kids is fun and they do adult shows here as well. The place is run by some of the nicest people. And they do early voting in this location, which is super convenient. Lately, we began piano lessons and hoping the kiddo enjoys those. Recently started working out at the Riverdale Y. As I had never worked out, I signed up for sessions with a trainer. Wainer, the person training me, could not be better: he is patient and encouraging, his explanations are clear, and he is full of knowledge about how the machines and routines work to create muscle and better health. I never liked exercise, but these sessions seem to go quickly and I enjoy them. Every session leaves me energized, with minimal soreness. After only 5 and a half weeks, I already have some muscular development. I'm grateful to Wainer and to the Riverdale Y for having such an employee. This review is for the swimming program. My son began here as a four year old and is now in his third consecutive seven week swim session. The teachers, especially Jackie, are wonderful and he has not only learned so much from the program but they make it fun and varied and he looks so forward to attending. On Sunday mornings there are seven kids in his level 2 group and three instructors work With them. I've never seen such a fantastic student to teacher ratio. Felicia who runs the program is efficient and approachable. Locker rooms are clean and in good repair. This place far outpaces two previous facilities we used for family swim lessons. I would happily pay for a family membership to the Y if they were open on Saturday's but alas. read more

The facilities are top-notch, but membership is expensive. Currently, it's $995 per year, that rebills automatically unless you cancel (more expensive if you pay monthly) My one-year membership just expired, and I decided not to renew. Considering the Y is a non-profit organization and pays no taxes, shouldn't their fees be lower than a comparable for-profit business? But they're not. They're more expensive. I don't get that. I also feel that the age to qualify for their senior discount, 65, is unfair, given that most establishments in NYC that offer senior discounts (movie theaters, the MTA, etc.)start at age 60, or 62. They have it all - adult classes, comprehensive after-school programs, basketball courts, various sports leagues, including volleyball, for people of all ages, swimming pool, fitness center, squash/raquetball courts, a full weight room, and computer labs. They also offer classes theater and visual arts, yoga, pilates, massage, aquatics and continuing education. I used to come here as a kid for the after-school program which including art, karate, computers, cooking class, track and field, raquetball, and other sports/interests...I LOVED coming to the Y after-school. i think it was a little expensive but it must have been worth it because I came to the program until I was in junior high. The YM-YWHA's summer day camp was even BETTER. it was the BEST. Definitely some of the best summer's of my young life. You first few years you are on the camp grounds -sports, arts & crafts, swimming, etc - during the week in Pearl River. in Junior High you join "junior travel" where you travel 2 or 3 days of the week with the rest of the days on the camp grounds. And then you evolve to Teen Travel where you go on a trip 4 days a week w/2 or 3 overnight trips! It was amazing.., unforgettable experiences including white water rafting, water parks, and theme parks. The YM-YWHA was filled with kind and friendly people including the staff and the members. Although some activities or practices were Jewish-faith based, I felt ABSOLUTELY 0 conversion pressure - this coming from a person raised in a Christian family. Membership, after-school, and summer camp prices keep rising with inflation, but it is a great investment. My parents are still members, primarily for the exercise gym. As the largest indoor recreational center in Riverdale, it is a cultural hub for the neighborhood. read more

I should start by saying their swim classes for kids are very good - my son loves it, which mean I love it. Scheduling a birthday party here is a whole different kind of experience. Unless you live down the block (I live in a different borough) and physically go there to get information, you can forget about ANYbody getting back to you either by email or by phone. The registrar is a level short of an intern and has poor communication skills (based on the one time I actually tracked her down). The receptionist probably has nightmares about me considering the number of times I begged her yelling not to transfer me to their voicemail but actually grab the person physically and make them answer my call. The 2 stars is for the swim program which is worth at least 2 more but everything else drags it down to 2...and that's being generous. read more

If you want your child to learn dancing this school is the place to go. My daughter takes up ballet classes. I'm happy with Natalia Yepes, our teacher, who is very helpful and experienced. She teaches children of all ages. read more

i know nothing about the other programs which seem to be very well liked. I only want to comment on the adult swimming class I attended Monday June 24, 2013. It was a highly dangerous situation with one life guard( now 2 are recommended by Red Cross) overcrowded with unlimited class size of very elderly seniors, an instructor who did not explain or know what he was doing and people who did not know what they were doing. I asked one lady and she said she was just trying not to drown.I am reporting them to NYC for Health and Safety Violations. read more

The YM-YWHA of Riverdale is an excellent place for people of all ages. They offer after school care, multiple senior programs for those of all ages and ability levels, fitness facilities, and other leisure activities for members. The staff is helpful and kind and willing to assist with any questions or problems. The senior program in particular offers adult daycare for seniors with physical or mental challenges, movies, outings, social activities (games, music, discussion, etc.), Kosher meals daily, and multiple staff members including a social worker to assist both seniors and their caregivers. While they welcome people of all faiths, they also celebrate all Jewish holidays and provide meals for those that choose to participate. They celebrate members' birthdays and also have weekend dances and trips! This facility also offers a unique socialization program for Holocaust victims which includes monthly gatherings! Other activities include various exercise classes, children's programs, performing arts, etc. While the facility itself is quite dated, they are currently undergoing renovations (cosmetic and internal) and also constantly add new classes and activities for members. I've been a member of the gym for several years & i have been giving serious consideration about cancelling my membership. I have been to many other health clubs over the years & this place ranks among the worst when it comes to cleanliness. So many members use the machines/equipment & it's becoming a rare find that any of them take the time to wipe down a machine after they've used it. And the really unfortunate part is that the staff does nothing to enforce it. I've seen it time & time again & there are some really nasty members who think others enjoy touching their bodily fluids......it's been brought to the director's attention several times but the staff still refuses to enforce this rule. read more

My daughter attended the Riverdale Y Preschool program this year. She had the worst possible experience in this school. Firstly, she was bullied and taunted by her fellow classmates. The faculty pretended to care but ultimately did nothing and allowed this behavior to continue. There is obvious favoritism to certain parents and excuses made for lack of supervision. Secondly, she wasn't taught anything, it is truly a glorified daycare and honestly, not even a good one. I urge that you look elsewhere for a Preschool, your child deserves better read more

Review of the fitness center only. Gym is kept pretty clean for the most part. Other patrons re rack weights. There tends to be a bit of laziness in wiping down equipment and the enforcement of this. That said it does remain clean. Some equipment is falling a part of bit, looking at you incline bench for sit-ups. There is a nice amount of cardio and strength training equipment. There are other gyms in the riverdale area if you just want a place to work out as membership here gets you more than just fitness center, but it does come with good classes and lots of other perks if that is of interest. read more
