I am thrilled I found this amazing gym. I mostly swim and do yoga, but since I'm a woman over 50,…read moremy doctor has told me I need to lift weights and do other types of strength training. But I have a hard time doing it on my own - it just seems so boring compared to other sorts of exercise. But Uptown Movement changed this for me. I signed up for the unlimited classes, and I went 2-3 times a week. I've been at it for about two years now, and the difference in my overall fitness and well-being is huge. There is a friendliness to this place, an openness to great diversity in terms of age, race, sexuality, body size and type, language, etc. that is immensely appealing. I like the coaches and my classmates (mostly women) enough to make me want to go. The emphasis is never on how one looks or losing weight - it's always on increasing mobility and strength, especially as one ages. Before I started taking these classes, I had back problems (especially when picking up my 70-pound dog to bathe her), and I often sprained an ankle (weakened by a bad injury in my youth) and sometimes fell (my dog pulls me a lot). For the last 2 years, I haven't sprained my ankle, haven't been injured falling (and have hardly ever fallen at all), and more. And I can now deadlift my weight. In sum, I think this gym is great, and I encourage you to do your body (and mind) a great favor and join.

The community is also great - a diverse group of locals who love the neighborhood and are supportive of your goals.

The location is great with several stores and restaurants in the area. You can work out, pick up groceries from Target, and get some food from a nearby restaurant. This is a large gym with two floors full of equipment. The busiest time is usually weekday evening hours. The weekends are when I usually go. It is mostly empty and I can work out at my own pace. The only hectic time is at the start of the year when everyone is here starting to work out. Everything is clean and easy to access. There are times where a machine is broken or a ceiling tile needs to be replaced but those issues are fixed quickly. Everyone is friendly and helpful here. I love the large amount of space to walk around. Compared to the Wall Street location, this place gives you a lot of breathing room. I will continue to work out here and keep up with my fitness journey.

I think Joe Brender is a sweet person and probably a good boxing coach, but he could not keep to a…read moreschedule. My son signed up for Fridays and Sundays at 5pm. The first meeting he was 5 mins late bc a neighbor needed a jump. No big deal, didn't think much of it. The next week he said he had to give my son's apt away bc one of his trainers quit. He changed the apt 4 times, ultimately I asked him to train the two of them together, so my son could keep the apt. After that, he continued to call and text at least 10 plus times per apt saying Sundays are hard for him, can we move it to Saturdays etc. He insisted he could not confirm the Sunday time until Sunday morning, so we had to hold the whole day aside until we heard from him. He clearly doesn't understand that in good business, you try to accommodate the customer. He had absolutely no respect for our time. I am a single mother and I work on the weekends, so this kind of crazy making completely stressed me out. I called him on it and he dropped us. He gave me the rest of my money back, but I am still trying to get a refund from Astral Fitness, the gym he required us to join in order to train with him. We have switched to Westchester Boxing Gym which is $100 per hour (no extra gym fee), which turns out is the going rate. Joe was $25 per session. I can only guess that Joe has to over book himself to survive on such low rates and in doing so, becomes overwhelmed and pleases no one. It had occurred to me to offer Joe $50 per session if he could keep to a schedule, but I didn't want to be jerked around at a higher rate and be even more disappointed.

I joined Coach Medina's running club back in March 2026 just to prepare for a simple physical test,…read morewhich I discussed with him before signing up. Unfortunately, I ended up injuring myself on the very first day, and two months later I'm still dealing with the injury. I'm not saying Coach Medina doesn't know what he's doing, but I do want to warn others to stretch properly and listen to their bodies. I allowed myself to be pushed beyond my safe limits by Coach Medina during training, running WITHOUT stretching, running again afterward, doing sprints and push-ups and I ended up running over 10 miles on my first day even though I'm not a runner. I was also called out for "giving up too easily" while I was already in serious pain, and now the injury may even require surgery. I just hope others take their body's warning signs seriously and avoid getting hurt.

I have been running for years but never considered myself a runner until the last two years and…read moreeven then I wasn't consistent. Sure, I was running 3 or so times a week but my pace was the same and my form was off. I wasn't reaching my full potential. One night while having wine with one of my best girlfriends we started talking about running (at this point I was much more consistent and dedicated) and she spoke so highly of Coach Medina and his wife Coach Marie, she told me everyone at QDR (her running team) loves them and have had results with their training. So I jumped on the bandwagon quickly. I contacted them for an initial appointment and from there I was set up with a schedule (they use TrainingPeaks which is most compatible with Garmin so for those that don't have a Garmin yet, buy one you won't regret it). I would do the runs and check in with them weekly (if I wanted to but was encouraged) and check my schedule every week to see what the plan was (the plan changed depending on my progress and the monthly package plan I chose). Eventually, after a few months of running solo I changed my plan and started to join the track meets. Now to give a backstory, I was that kid in HS who would walk the track, the pacer test? Get out of here but I am athletic. Name a sport and I play it. I started out being able to run a mile at 13:00 and thought WOW AMAZING. When I met Coach I was down to running 10:30 a mile and over the course of a few months (of consistency) I managed to get that down to 8:45 (during the winter months LOL summer not so much) for my long runs. The track workouts were transformative, I was working with others around my pace, I was part of a community and I didn't realize how desperately I needed that to keep motivated and enjoy the process. Coach Medina and Coach Marie are an amazing duo. They give real advice and set high yet realistic expectations to ensure progress, maintain commitment and interest level, and keep injury LOW. All of these things combined make for an amazing experience. I am now part of the Sub-4 group and life is brighter. I am a very "I'll do it on my own person" when it comes to traveling, going out to eat and at one point running but that has changed and I don't intend to look back. Everyone who I have met is so welcoming and genuine. I have tried MANY running clubs and they are usually only filled with predominately white, tall, beautiful folk which is cool but to be part of a community where I am not the only Hispanic person is RARE for me. I love how diverse their runners are, the varied backgrounds of life each comes from, different age groups, body types, it is HANDS DOWN the most inclusive running group I've ever come to know. I recommend them to ALL of my friends and strangers and now Yelp! If you're looking for a running community (whether you decide to just work alone and take the workouts that way or meet up on certain days- once guidelines change) that supports you, inspires you to reach your fullest potential, and leaves you yearning for more yet leaves you with a full feeling of accomplishment then this is for you! I REALLY encourage you to reach out to them, they have changed my life and I'm sure they will change yours. TLDR: ONLY THE BEST RUNNING COACHES EVER. Give them a call.
