Thank you for nothing. RSPCA wouldn't accept a stray cat with tick paralysis after saying they would pick him up from the vet clinic. Advising that if we should euthanise him ourselves rather then drive him to them. Poor care on their behalf. read more

I recently went here with a friend who's looking for a dog to adopt and was really impressed with the standard and organisation of this facility. All on the one block of land, there's the adoption centre and a big RSPCA pet store, where, if you adopt an animal, you can go straight away to stock up on things to care for your new pet. Upon walking into the adoption centre, staff are friendly and welcoming and eager to help if you have any questions about the process or need advice about what type of animal to adopt. All animals available for adoption are in the RSPCA database, so you can actually search online before going there. It's mostly dogs available for adoption here, but I saw some little guinea-pig hutches and a few cats too. The dogs are each kept in their own little room with a screen telling you their name, breed, age, with a little bit of information about their temperament and needs. Some of them have a half door open through which you can reach in and give them a cuddle. Adopting a dog from RSPCA will set you back around $300, but they come desexed and vaccinated, so it's pretty good value and you get to give a dog a new home. read more

As a dog lover (some may even say adorer) I am horrified about the practices of most pet stores. A lot of puppies are bred in puppy arms and taken from their mums far too early (but they're so cute so they sell quicker!). This can lead to all sorts of problems for the owners and the animals and you could end up with a traumatised dog that is much more likely to snap, bite or inappropriately wee. The other issue is of course the fact that pet stores can just sell an animal to anyone on an impulse buy. This means that a few weeks ago heaps of people got an adorable bundle of fluff, and over the next few months too many of these adorable bundles are going to get dumped. You can help break the cycle by only buying through small breeders, or better yet going to the RSPCA. Here you get a chance to give an animal a second crack at a good home, plus you also support the work the RSPCA does. As Emma and Lizan have mentioned it does cost around $300 to get a dog, however this is a fraction of the price of most pet stores, the animal is already desexed and you get an awesome feel good glow. This brand spanking new facility, is the first phase of a larger one in the Wacol location for the RSPCA. They have upgraded to a larger facility in order to meet the demands of the animals coming in during peak times throughout the year... sadly to say, many being around Christmas time. The staff here are a mix of volunteers and paid staff, but one thing is for sure, they care about animals. We dropped a grey bird off here because it had damaged its wing falling out of the next, and they accept other wildlife as well. It's a great facility and somewhere you can go if you are looking for another household pet. Some dogs cost about $315 so you are still looking to spend some money, which goes back into raising the dogs, buying the food etc. So don't go there like my friend A did, expecting to get a free dog... it just doesn't work that way mmkay? What a great service they do for Brisbane, would go back there if I was ever looking for another dog in the future or cat... or bird or guinea pig! read more

Fantastic place. It's almost completely run by volunteers and the atmosphere of care for the animals and the organisation is palpable when you first walk in. We initially went to Wacol because they have a RSPCA tip shop right there. On a tight budget, it's one of those places to go to fun goo deals. From there we headed over to the adoption area and checked out the future adoptees. The entire place is clean and well organised. All you really see are volunteers and hardly any staff. It's great to see so many people willing to help out. Gives a good feeling being there. Later, a friend told me about their foster program. Knowing my wife missed home (and her cat), we decided to foster for kitties. We were given the okay from our landlords (as long as we didn't leave the kitties behind when we left). Process was seamless. Got a call a month in that they had a 4 week old kitty with a tail amputee and they provided the food, toys, crate and meds needed. We ran into some issues with diarrhoea and bleeding but the vet at Wacol took care of everything. We felt at ease knowing they were probably as (or possibly more than) concerned about the animals as we were. Now I volunteer here. First day and I smell of mince and poo but have a smile on my face. Their concern for cleanliness is encouraging. They have the resources to separate the sick animals from the healthy one and have heaps of vollies yet everything is still full one. They need more volunteers and more money and resources. The Wacol facility is probably one of the best in Queensland and it still could use more help but I hear the other locations are worse off. Hard to imagine... Volunteering is great for the soul. Selflessness will pave your way to heaven and you'll reap wealth that cannot be merited. And it's not the act that's important but the heart. But even if your hearts' not in it, do the act and maybe your heart will follow :) read more

It's actually a nice trek out if you happen to love animals. They have an animal hospital, a cafe (basic), thrift shop (quite decent), pet goods store and of course the adoption center. Adoption center always has a large number of dogs and cats. Usually some others also such as birds and guinea pigs. Heaps of parking. read more

I came up from Coffs Harbour to adopt. My baby passed on 5wks ago so I needed to fill the void. The RSPCA at Coffs is very depressing & the staff are not very nice, not friendly, so I decided to visit Wacol. Wow! that's just an understatement. The staff are just wonderful, the facility is so clean no smell at all. The animals are well cared for. I was very impressed by the whole setup. And you can even get something to eat & drink. I'm very glad I made the trip because I came home with a forever friend- a maltese x about 6yrs old who is fitting in very nicely. Thanks to a fine bunch of people who care so much for those beautiful animals at Wacol. read more
