The puppies at this particular Pets Paradise seem to be more of the "designer dog" type than those of the other Pets Paradises I have visited. The main four front cages usually only designate one to kittens (which are always gorgeous) and the rest to fashionable dogs, such as Pomchis (Pomeranian-Chihuahua crosses) and Maltipoos (Maltese-Poodle crosses). Such dogs go for anywhere between $400-$900 a pop. Or pup. (Sorry.) The store is packed with stuff for your pets, with some especially impressive jungle-gym arrangements for cats. There's also a wide range of dog treats if you own one of those rare dogs who don't like Smackos (mine is one). I've heard stories in the news about puppy farms (where dogs are illegally bread in inadequate conditions) and the large percentage of pet stores in Australia that buy from these farms. I sincerely hope Pets Paradise is not one of these stores.

It's the only one in the massive Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, and with the location right down the escalators and next to the new Harvey Norman, it isn't shy of people. The store is small, it's tiny, it gets crowded and there are puppies here usually that look so sad. The puppies also get rotated between the Pets Paradise if they aren't sold after a certain amount of time, and sadly Indooroopilly Pets Paradise have always had a lot of puppies that were bigger ones. Also, they tend to cram a fair few into the glass prisons they call pet windows and although i'm sure they tend to sell some puppies, I'm not a huge fan of the cramped environments they are selling dogs and cats in. There is quite a limited range of guinea pigs, birds and fish at the back of the store, if you can squeeze in, but just don't go there.

Have you ever been into a pet shop that didn't have puppies? Or at least kittens? It's like an ice cream shop with no chocolate, or a sushi place with no salmon. Luckily I soon located them and realised they had simply been hidden behind the Christmassy white spray all over the front windows. This isn't a very big pet shop, but it's adequate. They have a limited range of animals including guinea pigs and fish along with the requisite puppies, pet food and of course accessories. It's not the most exciting of its genre, but it gets the job done.

The times I have been here I've seen puppies, little kittens, guinea pigs and an array of beautiful fish. The puppies, kittens and guinea pigs are located towards the front of the shop and the fishies are towards the back wall. The little pups are the front window cannot be seen by passer by's unless you walk into the store. I think this is a good idea as it might be stressful for the little guys to see lots of people coming up to them. However, having a front view of a paper plastered window does not make this store look appealing. They should consider replacing that. All in all though, the pups don't seem to be bothered and look happy and healthy. One thing I noticed here that I didn't approve of, was all the little children poking the pets and the shop minder didn't seem phased by it at all. I know parents have a responsibility over their children, but I should hope the pet shop staff would protect the pets from children who are stressing them out. Still, despite this, it is a nice little pet store with quite a lot on offer. Good range in toys and pet accessories.

Weird. In truth, what I think they're trying to convey is that they have a comprehensive range of pets, animal accessories and pet food as well as the know how to match. Having checked out their store and bought a couple of tetras as a gift for a friend's aquarium I'd have to agree. And before I go on to catalogue the impressive animal inventory on offer I'd like to point out that these guys do not support the ethically dubious practice of 'puppy farming' that some other bigger chains do, instead adopting out cats and dogs (not necessarily the cute juvenile ones) from animal welfare groups in an admirable not-for-profit venture. Kudos guys... OK, public service message aside these guys have: birds, fish, cute as a button baby turtles, lizards (blue-tongues, various 'dragons'), snakes and even pet insects. That's right, INSECTS ( I spotted some very interesting and well camouflaged leaf insects for sale)! Their range of healthy pet food has equal 'wow' factor. There are heaps organic meats and bones for your dog, even vegetarian equivalents of old favourite pet snacks like the vege pig's ear. If you're looking for a new animal friend, or a gift for your current one, you can't go wrong with Pets Unleashed.

Then, behind the counter, there's a row of flea tablets lined up like cigarette packets. Glancing at the beer and tablet line-up, I felt like I was in the equivalent of a dream toy shop for dogs where they also sell beer and smokes. This large store sells an insane amount of toys for your pet. There's stuff for cats, birds, fish and other pets, but as I have a dog it was mostly dog-specific products I focused on. The dog selection seemed to take up a large proportion of the store, and there's even a dog (a surprisingly docile Chihuahua) that sleeps on the front counter. (He's six, called Louis, and likes pats but not being held.) Besides a huge selection of toys - so much you can't take it all in in one visit - there's other stuff to pimp out your pet, including a doggy clothing rack if your pet is that way inclined. The Pet Cafe also boasts a wide range of health foods for dogs, particularly those suffering from health issues (e.g. calcium deficiency, obesity - general medical issues that also seem common to humans). The store stocks both Science Diet and Advance food and health products. In terms of The Unhealthy, the front counter showcases an assortment of doggy cookies and chocolates (actually made of carob) that are home-made looking. They weren't as expensive as I thought they'd be, but I'd bought enough stuff here already. The counter staff were also incredibly friendly and chatty, which you'd gather from a business where there is a resident pet.

It's helped us a lot as buying a big bag of biscuits and him not eating any of them was a real worry. Hey, they even have the infamous snake/s there, plus a number of fruit trees (which you are probably forbidden from tasting too, unless you're willing to buy it ;) These guys are water plant specialists, with their massive aqua-filled terracotta pots home to oodles of different aquatic plants, like water lilies and edible water chestnuts. I bought one of the latter once and put it in a water feature in my yard. After a few months we yielded a few delicious chestnuts. They also have an impressive range of cacti and succulents, which are easy to care for, decorative and make a great gift. The innovative decorative pieces designed by local artists are also good present fodder, but be prepared to pay in the hundreds for some (they are after all 'art').

And thus begins the journey that led me to the West End wonderland that is Mappin's Nursery. Mappin's is a green haven on Montague Road that have a range of plants and not to mention helpful staff willing to answer my silly questions such as, "What make great house plants? Can you show me your suggestions?" and I didn't dare tell my helper that I kind of like plates as saucers when she handed me a plastic saucer for my newly acquired plant saying, "I don't understand kids these days using plates as saucers. I can't let you do that." Did I spray myself with "Psuedo Hipster" this morning? How did she know?!? I'd looked for this particular plant at a household name hardware chain (it rhymes with running), and while I paid a fraction more for the same size plant at Mappin's, the plant itself looks healthier and you bet your bottom dollar I feel better (okay, maybe a little smug) that my money went towards a fantastic local business. Plus I feel like the extra coin went towards the handful of advice I was given about caring for the plant. When I enter the home owner game I'll be back at Mappin's asking them for their green thumb advice on a range of gardening 101. Oh and finally nabbing one of the beautiful Magnolia trees they sell!

The staff at Petbarn are knowledgeable and helpful, and are all animal lovers with lots of experience in pet care. The range of fish and aquarium products here is excellent and they have staff dedicated specifically to helping you establish and maintain your own aquarium. Another thing I like about Petbarn is that pets on leads are welcome, so if you need to get your dog a new collar for example, you can actually bring them in to see what fits (and you can count on them getting cuddles and treats from the staff as well!). Petbarn has a wide variety of pet products including foods, grooming products, accessories, toys, and treats. They also sell some medications such as worming and flea treatments. The staff here are happy to consult with you about whatever pet advice you need. Many times I've come into Petbarn to seek advice about my fish tank and have had a long, helpful conversation with a staff member and then gone home without needing to buy anything because the staff don't push you to buy things in return for their help. For this reason, whenever I need to buy anything for my dogs or aquarium, I head to Petbarn. They also have a customer loyalty card and lots of information about obedience, puppy pre-school, and other pet activities.

Finding Paddington Pups was the result of a google search and a telephone call where a pleasant young man on the other end told me, "If you can bring him in this morning we can see him." I'd been searching for a new groomer for our pampered pooch after a less than desirable cut just before Winter. All I wanted this visit was a general tidy up, wash and dry (his visits to the salon sound all too much like mine!). Paddington Pups were able to see Dutch that day and it worked out cheaper than our usual salon. Cheaper doesn't always equal better but upon being reunited with my pup a few hours later it sure was in this case. The groomer had heard everything I said and trimmed his face without making him look like a dog without any facial hair. His feet were tidied and there was no great length taken off the rest of his coat.
