All on the one block of land, there's the adoption centre and a big RSPCA pet store, where, if you adopt an animal, you can go straight away to stock up on things to care for your new pet. Upon walking into the adoption centre, staff are friendly and welcoming and eager to help if you have any questions about the process or need advice about what type of animal to adopt. All animals available for adoption are in the RSPCA database, so you can actually search online before going there. It's mostly dogs available for adoption here, but I saw some little guinea-pig hutches and a few cats too. The dogs are each kept in their own little room with a screen telling you their name, breed, age, with a little bit of information about their temperament and needs. Some of them have a half door open through which you can reach in and give them a cuddle. Adopting a dog from RSPCA will set you back around $300, but they come desexed and vaccinated, so it's pretty good value and you get to give a dog a new home.

When I brought a puppy home from the RSPCA I took her to my local vet immediately. I needed to get…read moreher some injections, and while I was there I wanted to get some advice about training. I met with Dr Cusack. She gave me a good first impression- she started singing 'Sussudio'- the song my dog is named after. When I asked about tips on training, I was told that I should enrol Sussudio into puppy training school. Explaining that I had limited funds, and again asking for some home-grown advice, she simply continued on the line of "puppy school really is the best training a dog can get". I didn't realise that vets were salespeople. In later visits to the vet, I found Dr Cusack to be condescending toward pet owners. She's highly technical in her explanations, which yes, does make me think that she knows her stuff, but if she can't deliver her point in terms understandable to those without a veterinary degree, what's the use? There only so many times you want to ask "can you dumb it down a little?" Sure, I would entrust my animal into the care of West End Vet, I'm not at all saying there are issues with incompetence. Dr Cusack and her staff are excellent with animals. You might just find yourself thinking that they're not so good with their human companions.

She is also crazy cheap. The other review isn't wrong though, her human level interaction isn't super and she can definitely leave you feeling overwhelmed and confronted (or confused if you have no medical background). With all that said she is still the best vet ever and I will never leave her (even if she has made me cry). If you can deal with her intensity and how manic she is she is well well well worth it.

They have bounced back overnight and I am so glad I had them checked to ensure they were healthy. Great team, always friendly and helpful. I've been taking my two dogs to this surgery over the past two years and found them to be exceptional. All the staff are so lovely and helpful, including the girls at the front desk. Their prices are competitive and they give quality advice and support. I've even contacted the vet after hours on the weekends to get advice when worried about my dog's health and been reassured on what to do. Turns out 'wait and see how he wakes up tomorrow' is usually the best advice as my dog can be a little lame one day and then running laps at the dog park the next. Honest and sensible advice is what you'll get. I've found both vets, Susan and Rod to be very caring, gentle and really down to earth.

I scoffed…read moreat this initially but with almost weekly, sometimes bi-weekly visits, to our closest Petbarn store in Kenmore, I'd say whoever came up with that statistic was right on the money. Thankfully, like a lot of big warehouse type retail institutions, their purchasing capacity means discounts are passed down to us, the consumers. Petbarn is one of the cheapest pet supply stores we've found and there's always a great range available in store, plus the staff are readily available to give genuinely helpful advice about the best food for your pooch, and more. I'd also recommend signing up in store for their store rewards. You get a 20% off voucher when joining and they email you regular deals which can come in handy when, for example, you need to purchase Rovers regular food.

Thankfully, Pet Emergency operates out of Queensland Vets at Stafford Heights and before midnight charge a lower fee for after hour consults. The pooch and I were seen to relatively promptly for what was a busy weekend of consults and injured animal drop offs for the clinic. The vet that saw to us was warm and friendly. There was no hard sell for product -- just honest advice and diagnosis. These guys are firmly in the pet black book. You hope you never need to call upon them but you're thankful they're there if needed.

Unfortunately the vets here are not about the doing all they can for your pet but rather what they can do as a business. They will go the latter because it's, and I quote, "worthless" as our dog's doctor, Phillip Thomas, so nonchalantly expressed in a conclusion meeting about our beloved dog, Bentley, who passed away. We still do not know what the cause of her death was and we have no answers. However, we did manage to be invoiced a nice hefty bill. Their staff are not properly trained and don't have very good phone manner especially when communication is their way of conveying the updates of your pets conditions. Not to mention the staff there know absolutely nothing and never have an answer and aren't to enthusiastic in finding out. A loss is a loss, pets are no less worthy than a human life and animals become a part of peoples lives and journeys. This clinic is insufficient in their work, their research and their communication.
