I realize this happened back in 2104, but I feel not much has probably changed. As I'd been laid off from this temp agency, I found need to apply for interim welfare, till the EI I applied for, kicked in. I got an initial disbursement, but then got a letter from my worker, telling me me that I needed to go apply for one those how-to-find-a-job courses, or be cut off.
But when I applied at McBride, unbeknownst to me, apparently my speech was too literate for their comfort, for they refused to confirm with EI, that I'd enrolled with them. And until such confirmation, my EI benefits would be witheld. So I walked, which resulted in EI docking me 6.6 weeks benefits, as penalty.
The actual course itself, was a farce (they still admitted me to it, though I'd missed the first week), It consisted merely of them giving you a booklet to read, and doing the open book quiz, at the end of it; the afternoons would be spent orally correcting it, as a group. And that 'group,' I might add, was comprised mostly of trailer park types.
I found out later, that if someone sounded like they'd been university-educated, that the place would usually attempt to get rid of them, in this manner. Most likely, they feared being reported on, to the government. They just like their lumpenproletarian clients who say nothing, and whom they get payment for.
