Cheap drinks as well, and it's 50p for a game of pool. You can also play darts if you want, or just sit there, relax and have a brew. They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly. As long as it's not busy, this pub is actually nicer than I've expected. Yeah, I'll probably go there again.

Lady behind bar was friendly, played the football scratch card which helps for the free food at half time. Only one screen with limited volume. Cute girls sat around pretending to watch the game and plenty of regulars you will most likely see on a regular basis. A crazy landlady who obviously doesn't take the slightest s*** from anybody. Would I return again ? ABSOLUTELY. Pubs like this are a die'ing breed. If people don't visit them and give the support they should have then it will just be another apartment block for developers. The surrounding new build flats aren't the prettiest but it's worth making a special trip to enjoy a pint and a bit of culture in this charming boozer. A grand looking, red brick building with several floors, The King's Arms has been lovingly nurtured and restored back to life by current manager Jon Cooper. There's a community theatre company and a collective of visual artists and photographers based on the top floor and a performance area for local and visting bands on the first floor. There's free folk and jazz gigs every Wednesday and Greek /Klezma musicians every Thurs. There's also occasional film screenings, poetry readings and community benefits. The reason I love The King's Arms so much however, is for their gorgeous bar with comfy leather seating, high ornate ceiling and worn wooden tables. The bar staff are as welcoming as the decor and whenever I've been there's always been something cool on the stereo from Serge Gainsbourg to The Shangra Las. The fact they also serve great ales, beers, spirits and warm drinks at reasonable prices is what makes it one of Manchester's coolest drinking dens! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-52UnhQhu8

Well, lo and behold, I'm having to bump the New Oxford up a star. I'll tell you why I'm remarking…read moreit. One drizzly Sunday afternoon, I accompanied Vickie S to watch a couple of football matches in the New Oxford, shortly to be joined by one of our friends. Having been told there was no food at the King's Arms, I assured my mates that the New Oxford doesn't serve grub on Sundays at all. It says so on the website, in reviews, everything. As we arrived a sign greeted us informing us of which days food was served. Monday to Saturday. Cue much lip trembling from the very hungry football fanatics. Even when inside they still tried their luck and asked the bartender if there was any food at all. When met with a negative, as well as a round of drinks we bought a round of crisps. Every Seabrooks flavour you could think of. And then later, while our friend was enjoying a cigarette outside, the very sweet bartender who'd been lovely to us throughout the ridiculous crisp mountain exchange dropped a packet of mini Cheddars and a packet of pork scratchings on our table. 'Here you go, on me,' he said with a smile. We looked at each other. She, aware of my Yelping duties, turned to me and said, 'I think you're gonna have to add another star.' 'I think so too,' I responded. The pair of us gushed about just how nice that was. Free snacks and very kind service is something so rare in cities, and in that little corner of Salford, on the very outskirts of Manchester city centre, we were privileged to receive such wonderful things. New Oxford, well done. I'll be in to try the food very soon, which I'm sure will be fantastic. I also tried a new fruit beer. Passionfruit, on tap. To quote Romeo Montague, 'Did my heart love til now?' Heaven in a glass, I assure you. Utter heaven. Is it bad that I'm craving this beverage on a Wednesday morning?
