Walking up to the front desk, I simply needed to check in. The initial reaction, what do you need? No greeting....The response....checking in. Two hotel keys were requestedand received only one. The room itself was spacious and clean, but unfortunately, it smelled of smoke.
During the evening, the weather was beautiful, and we were enjoying Columbia. I thought, "It's a hotel--things happen," and tried not to let the initial issues affect our stay.
Unfortunately, after returning to the hotel, we stopped at the bar. Two gentlemen were already sitting there with their drinks. After about ten minutes, the manager came out and asked if we had been served. We said no, and he told us he would go get the bartender.
Another ten minutes passed, and we decided to head toward the elevator. While we were in the elevator, the manager informed us that he had found the bartender. At that point, we said, "No, thank you." He apologized, but by then the opportunity to provide good service had passed.
The breakfast experience was even more frustrating.
When the room was booked , breakfast was added and prepaid. The online booking process was confusing, and prepaid for two breakfast buffets...this was added to the reservation. When we went to breakfast, the employee greeted us and handed us a menu. We explained that breakfast had already been charged to our room, but she questioned us about whether we had filled out a ticket when we arrived.
At that point, I was thinking, "Please don't send me back to the uninformed desk clerk. I need someone to walk me through this again." She explained a ticket needed to be filled out upon arrival but she became upset. Lack of communication between departments isn't my problem.
I decided I wasn't ordering anything and would simply grab a piece of toast. I was then informed that the toast was $4.00. I asked where the butter was and was told that they don't put it out.
Syrup, peanut butter, and every type of jelly are sitting out--and apparently, butter isn't simply available with the toast. At that point, the entire situation became frustrating.
I eventually told the employee that I understood this wasn't her fault, but I was simply over the lack of hospitality and service throughout the stay. I was also disappointed that the manager did not appear to take accountability for the lack of service from his employees.
My advice to anyone considering this hotel: Be prepared, ask questions, and make sure you fully understand what is included with your reservation--especially when it comes to breakfast and additional charges.
The biggest issue for me wasn't one isolated incident. It was the repeated lack of communication, service, and hospitality.
If you need to book this hotel, go in knowing exactly what you're paying for and what to expect. Otherwise, you may want to reconsider making the reservation.
