Royal China is my go-to Chinese spot. It's really close to my house, which is a huge bonus, but honestly I'd still go here even if it wasn't. The food quality is great every single time. We've ordered a lot from here, and I can't think of anything we didn't like. If I had to pick a favorite, it's probably the hot and sour soup. It's a perfect combination of hot to sour ratio. I've had it in a lot of places, and they just get it right every time. The string bean chicken is also one of my favorites. It's very flavorful, and the green beans are very fresh and cooked perfectly. We also really like the asparagus chicken, Mongolian chicken, walnut prawns, moo shu chicken, and the potstickers. My wife loves the sweet and sour chicken, and my daughter is all about the wonton soup. What's funny is we've never actually sat down and eaten there. I always say we're going to, but usually when we're in the mood for Chinese food, we just want to take it home. Every time I go in though, the place looks really nice and has a great vibe. The best Chinese food I have ever had. Consistent, delicious, and never disappoints. The ambiance of the restaurant is always very classy, I feel underdressed wearing anything less fancy thank a collared polo shirt! Their chicken chow mien and chicken fried rice is to die for! They have a very large menu with a ton of different options, and seating options ranging from small tables, booths, large tables, and you can also sit at the bar. The hostesses at the front are always welcoming and polite, and the servers are knowledgeable and friendly. Honestly, I struggle not to eat here more than I should because the food is so delicious! I will mention, especially on holidays, they are absolutely swamped. They have a huge following from the locals who know how good the food is, and they're definitely a favorite for people to order out from on holidays. Sometimes they do have trouble keeping up with the sheer number of orders they seem to receive. Was it ever worthwhile to head out into the further reaches of Santa Rosa and eat here. I had my comfort food, a bowl of wor won ton soup, and the ingredients were perfectly judged. A good quantity of won tons, not too large and heavy, and not driven out by the press of other ingredients. Meat was chicken, very smooth and tender, a rarity in Chinese soup chicken, and three large and juicy, and well flavored, shrimp. No beef nor pork. Plus, a good quantity of a variety of vegetables, mostly western standards: broccoli, zucchini, carrots, celery, etc. Only flaw was, the broth was a bit bland; I should have taken the waiter's advice and accepted some additional sauce. I've been to this wonderful restaurant many times. Always love their food. Tonight I was craving chicken broth and bok choy. Interesting craving. lol After a little search I determined this was my next plan of action. I skipped the endless questions for the lovely server and ordered straight away what I wanted. War WonTon Soup. I just needed something delicate for my palate tonight. And so I added steamed bok choy. My goodness! How perfect this was for my body and soul. I'm very satiated and happy with my choices. I often forget to take pics but this time I remembered. A perfect and light dinner with plenty leftovers for dinner tomorrow. The chef did something interesting with the wontons. I've always seen char su pork in War WonTon Soup. This time the chef used char su pork (I'm pretty sure) to fill the Wontons. We were greeted and seated as soon as we enter (depending on service levels, they were busy but yet they were still able to knock out tables left and right.) The décor is what I noticed first upon entering the front doors. It is vibrant and quite pretty, not a typical mom and pop Chinese restaurant. We also noticed a note on the door saying they are now open on Mondays. We were lucky because we were there for lunch on a Monday! This place was recommended to me by two friends so we decided to stop in and check out their lunch menu. I do remember when they were closed for a significant period of time a couple years ago, and the place has definitely gone through a serious facelift, all good. It feels modern and tastefully decorated. We had the sweetest server. I wish I caught her name but she was so pleasant and helpful. We ordered the cashew nut prawns and basil chicken. Lunch specials come with either fried rice or chow mein. In addition a small salad and a choice of soup, either won ton or hot and sour accompanies your meal. I asked our server what she prefers so I took her word for it and ordered my basil chicken with chow mein and hot and sour soup. My friend ordered her prawns with fried rice and won ton soup. The one thing that could be improved is the timing of everything. We received our salads, then immediately received our entrees and soup, so everything was ready at once. In spite of that, our lunch experience was super. Everything was flavored nicely, not too salty, and we both enjoyed our lunches very much. While we were there, I noticed tables turning over with new customers coming in to have lunch. It's definitely a popular spot even on a Monday! I've only been here for lunch and it's always very busy, it has a nice casual ambiance and comfortable. This used to be our favorite Chinese restaurant in Santa Rosa, but no more. Tonight's dinner: pot stickers, Chinese chicken salad and chicken chow fun. Pot stickers were doughy with a mushy filling devoid of flavor. Unpleasant. Chicken salad had a dry thin chicken breast that had been deep fried in a thick bland batter that tasted like mushy cardboard. The chow fun was 99% noodles with a little bit of dry chewy chicken and almost no veggies. After dining at this restaurant for the past 8 years, we are so disappointed. We will not be dining there in the future. What happened??? read more

Every time I'm visiting home and have a craving for Chinese food, this is the place I go to satiate that craving. The staff is really friendly and the ambiance is nice and modern; I like how the bar is set up. We always order a jasmine tea, so delicious sipping on it before and after your meal. Everything we get comes out really quick and it's always tasty and delicious. Last time we got the cashew shrimp, chicken eggplant, and the combination chow mein. Sooooooo good. Not sure what has happened, but their homemade pot stickers tasted like undercooked dough with undecernable and unflavorful pinkish filling and plain tasting dipping sauce. War Won Ton was low in flavor and under-cooked Won Ton. Chicken was unrecognizable and rubbery . Need a knife to cut up the pieces of chicken in my soup. The fried shrimp had a thick crunchy crust deep-fried. The ultra deep fried orange chicken's flavor was in orange sauce. Chicken Chow Fun had thinly sliced carrots which were hard to get onto fork and seemed undercooked. Broccoli Beef, and String Bean Chicken seem to have similar flavors. Again, chicken had a rubbery texture and beef had undecernable flavor They seem to do a lot of takeout but many tables and bar seats were empty on a Saturday night at prime dinner time. This restaurant has been a staple for over 30 years, changing ownership only once when Tina retired and sold it a few years ago. Thankfully, the food remains just as it always has been--absolutely delicious! It's been amazing to watch Royal China's evolution. The lady who took our order over the phone argued with me about what I had ordered. Then when we went to pick up the food she proceeded to help three other people before handing us our Togo order. Went to dinner with a gal friend this evening, a yearly co-birthday celebration. We'd been here before and enjoyed the decor. We were seated quickly, given menus and water. We made our menu selections, and waited for someone to take our order. We asked the hostess and even went up to a server working at the bar. It took a quite a while. Meantime, we observed the couple who were seated before us asking for mustard a couple of times before receiving it. A couple was seated after us and was greeted warmly. Their food order arrived before ours. I ordered appetizers because I was hungry! The potstickers were tasty but doughy in the center and hard to cut with our forks. My friend's dish was served about five minutes before mine. Both dishes were tasty. However, we felt ignored by our server. She checked on tables on either side of us and just walked past us. I got Basil Chicken and I call it Redemption Basil Chicken because it was perfect after the disastrous basil chicken I had recently at another establishment. We love their lunch specials. My favorite is the Szechwan Calamari. All lunches come with fried rice, chow mein or steamed rice, 2 soup choices and a delicious salad. Great price and you'll be full and satisfied. If you partake they have beer on tap. Some nice local breweries included. I heard about this place a decade ago or so, and ate there a few times before they did their remodel and expanded. The old decor wasn't bad, but the the new remodel is great - I really love the textured plaster walls, lighting, and the blown glass light fixtures - this place is not a hole in the wall by any measure! Although the menu and pricing is pretty typical - I always find the food is very well prepared, hearty portions, and high quality ingredients. I have triad a lot of dishes here over the years, and it would be hard to pick one favorite! I recently had the sautéed been curd with vegetables and was really impressed with the variety of vegetables and how well the tofu was prepared - it had a nice "skin" to it that made it very satisfying! Other favorites are the hot and sour soup, sizzling rice soup, and orange chicken! We really like the service here too - they always seem to be friendly, and prompt -and make sure we always have what we need. The kitchen seems to be very solid - food always come out fast and fresh! If you are traveling solo (or +1) they have a nice bar in the center of the restaurant, which provides comfortable seating and an alternate from the table/booth experience. They have a range of local and imported beers, wine and drinks as well. Overall, there is very little not to like about Royal China - the food is great, consistent, and the service is excellent. I have been going htere for yers but not for a year. I went for lunch for my friends birthday yesterday. Staff was very nice but the food has really gone down hill since the restaurant was sold I think a year ago? sie salad used to be mixed quality lettuce, now a few leaves of iceburg with dressing, won ton soup, two wontons, no seaweed or tofu. But the worst was the entree. I was so disappointed in the sauce on the lunch menu. bland. I had to add a lot of soy sauce to make it interesting. In the pst every entree there was great. Now? it has been cheapened - no flavor in shrimp snow pea dish. It is just not the same place as it used to be. and it was $50 for a lunch menu for two with one martini shrimp side. Our food was ready at 6:30pm-husband spent 90 minutes waiting in a crowded chinese restaurant while i had a houseful of hungry guests. No apologies or concessions made for inconvenience. I'll give a 3.5. This is a to go order. I will say it is a very pretty restaurant. We ordered three lunch meals with an order of egg rolls. Let's start with egg rolls. They tasted old and were very greasy and soggy, won't order them again. Hubby had spicy chicken with rice and loved it, daughter had orange chicken and also loved it. She had with showmen and said it was delish. I had basil eggplant and it was not good, tasted old and there was no basil or spice. Was very greasy. Definitely will try again, but order and ask if things could be made fresh. I will make rice at home and get chow me in. So not best but not worse. Btw place was packed. read more
