Admittingly, I was only there to get my Route 66 passport stamped. But the lady encouraged me to look around, and there was a lot of cool artifacts and information about the city of Holbrook. Plan on about 20-30 minutes here as there are many rooms to explore the town's history. The museum is free, but donations are accepted. They also have plenty of souvenirs, especially Route 66 ones.

Housed in a former bank from the early 1900s, the museum tells the story of Winslow's railroad roots, the famous Mother Road, and the people who helped shape the area. You'll find vintage photos, Native American artifacts, railroad memorabilia, and exhibits that bring northern Arizona's past to life. It's not a huge museum, but if you enjoy uncovering the stories behind the places you visit, it's well worth spending a little time there. Sometimes the smallest museums have the biggest personalities, and this one is a nice reminder that Winslow is much more than just a famous corner to stand on.

This was our first time visiting the museum, and the main reason we came was for the Hubble-Joe rug…read moreexhibit, which was simply amazing, along with the Licher Collection of Historic Navajo Weavings. In addition, the pieces on display by John Suttman, are beautiful, quirky, and entertaining! John's work can be seen throughout the La Posada and AMM, from the fused glass lanterns, ornate gates, and Turquoise Room Bar, to the sculptural winch used to display the large Hubble-Joe rug. Built in the 1930 Depot at the La Posada Hotel, the AMM is small yet fulfilling, with lots of history! There are incredible collections that the museum has gathered with the Winslow Arts Trust. Lots of history and items in regards to Fred Harvey, the Harvey Girls, Mary Coulter, the La Posada, and Winslow's rich cultural history. There are future plans for a sculpture garden, renovation of the 502 Railcar and the Turrell trailer, which are on the premises. We can't wait to see the completion of these exhibits! Danielle was so warm, welcoming, and full of information for visitors. The museum is currently open seven days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM and admission is just $5 (Winslow residents, college students, and Native Americans get in free with proper ID.) They also accept donations on their website, and currently Allan and Tina will match all gifts! Truly, a wonderful experience, and we cannot wait till our next visit! Our out-of-town visitors loved it as well!

My girls and I just missed entering the Petrified Forest National Park near this entrance by about…read morean hour. So we paused at Crystal Forest Museum & Gifts for a while. Crystal Forest is not only a private gift shop NOT associated with the National Park, but they also a campground. Check this out if you are traveling with an RV or tent because Petrified and Painted Desert do not allow camping to my knowledge. The museum is near the RV parking area. A separate, larger gift shop is on the other side of the National Park entrance. I'm a fan of this shop because they sell a variety of petrified wood that you are not allowed to take from the parks. "Then how do they get the petrified wood?" My oldest asked me. I did not inquire about this with staff members. It was so dark and I knew I would be soon approaching winter storms, so I wanted to get back on the road. Restrooms were available. Arizona is more than just the Grand Canyon and Sedona... check this area out too!

Crystal Forest Museum & Gifts has a lot of interesting items that relate to the Petrified Forest…read moreand Painted Desert. This private gift shop is not part of the national park and is located outside the south entrance. They have a really nice collection of colorful petrified wood here. It is illegal to take petrified wood from the park, so this place is a great option to purchase some. Next to the gift shop is a campground with approximately 20 spots. Most sites have sheltered picnic tables. You can camp with an RV, tent or sleep in one of their teepees. Just check with the gift shop for availability. There is no camping inside Petrified Forest National Park, so this is your best option.

The Homolovi ll was a great trail early in the day, it was exciting to see all the ruins, imagine what the buildings looked like and what life was like back in the day. The washrooms were decent, the shower heads could use some work as water went everywhere. But the pressure was good and it was nice and hot. I would definitely recommend this park to others. It's a quick jump into Winslow if anything is needed.

Historic spot with an informative visitor's center. Pay the State Park fee of $7 at the center, get…read morea map, and head out on a couple of trails to see ruins of one of the largest native American settlements, abandoned in the 1300s. There was also a mormon settlement nearby. Be sure and check out the diorama in the restroom at the center. Inside the state park is a nice view campground with full hookups, pull through sites, and water at each site. Flush toilets and showers are available.

I went with some friends to the Navajo County Fair in Holbrook, Az. None of us have been there so…read morewe had no expectations except with other fairs we have been to in the past. There is a large parking lot and we got a front row spot because we got there early. The midway wasn't open but that was fine. We went through the 4-H/FFA exhibits and commercial booths. It was fun walking around and checking out the sheep, cows and art projects. The clothing (sewing), canning and aquaculture projects amazed me with how detailed and complex they were. It is a County Fair so not a huge area. There was a small food court with pretty interesting foods. My fav was the Thai. I only had potstickers for a snack but they were delicious. The midway looked like it had great rides and more food stands. We enjoyed the 2 1/2 hours we spent there and would go back next year.

This is a cool little museum that features the types of fossils found here, as well as the NPS gift shop and ranger on duty. There are a bunch of brochures available about the human history of this area (ranging from the petroglyphs to the development of the area as a tourist attraction), flora and fauna, and more. The bathrooms are right outside, as well as the Giant Logs Trail. The logs here are indeed giant, with "Old Faithful", at the top of the trail being almost ten feet wide at the base! The pathway is a little confusing and could be marked a little clearer, but I think that is due to the erosion of the area. If you had to only make one stop, make it be this one.

Rainbow Forest Museum and Visitor Center is near the south end of Petrified Forest National Park in…read moreArizona. President Teddy Roosevelt made this area a National Monument in 1906 and then it became a National Park in 1962. There is another visitor center at the north end of the park, but I think this one is way nicer. At this visitor center is a gift shop, bathrooms and an information desk with park rangers on hand to answer questions. There are some paleontological exhibits complete with skeleton displays of prehistoric animals in the museum. You can also obtain a backpacking permit and get your US National Park Passport book stamped here. I enjoyed visiting here and doing the nature trail behind the building. The Giant Logs, Long Logs, and Agate House Trails can all be accessed from outside the visitor center. The largest and most colorful logs in the park is called "Old Faithful" and is on the Giant Logs Trail. I found the employees here to be very nice and helpful.

Since we moved to Arizona I have developed several new interests, and one of them is petroglyphs…read more So My Lady decided she would take me here for my birthday. Rock Art Ranch is way out in the country, on a dirt road between Winslow and Holbrook, Arizona, The dust from the road completely covered our car before we got to the ranch, and we washed the car the next day in Winslow. It was May, and we encountered quite a few cattle and calves on the way to the ranch and back. It is actually a 5000-acre working ranch, and we had to make reservations and pay for the tour with cash. The owners were real cowboys, and they escorted us on the tour personally. Three areas of interest were featured on the tour. The first was the ranch complex, which included a large converted barn, some old equipment including wagons and camp gear, a preserved bunkhouse, and a memorial rock garden outside the barn. The second was an area out in the wilds that included some Native American hogans and an archaeological site of a 14th-Century Puebloan village. The third was the area the ranch is famous for: petroglyphs. They are found in a canyon on the Chevelon Creek, a tributary of the Little Colorado River. A thousand feet away you wouldn't notice the canyon, but once you are there it's a treat. The Chevelon Canyon cuts into the plain for a depth of several hundred feet. There is a picnic area on a platform house that overlooks the canyon, with plenty of shade. It's a steep descent to the creek, down steps and a path cut into the sandstone walls. On those walls are thousands of carvings made by men and women that go back thousands of years, and that is what the Rock Art Ranch is really all about. Take a lunch, you can't buy one at the ranch. Take plenty of water, the 100-degree heat will get to you, especially when you realize you have to climb back up to the platform shelter. Don't worry about restrooms, there is a charming, clean outhouse up the hill from the platform shelter. Do have a look at other sites on the web to see what you're getting into. There is so much to explore, we'll go back some day and pick up where we left off.
