Arcadia…read morewas destroyed in a fire in 1905 and the buildings on Oak Street are from the early 1900's when the city was rebuilt. This store is located in the L.L. Morgan building which was the first building to be rebuilt after the fire. The upper facade of the building bears Morgans name and the 1906 date. On the first floor Morgan sold hardware and furniture and the top floor was the mortuary. When you look in the back on the first floor you can still see the pulley system that was used to hoist the bodies up to the top floor! I had a wonderful time visiting with Glenda who is the owner of this store. She told me how she used to have a Sear catalog business and rent to own business before selling antiques. In addition to selling her own items she also rents space to other vendors. Only the first floor of the building is open and she is using the two upper floors for storage. In the store you will find several rooms stuffed with housewares, furniture, bric-a-brac, jewelry, books, and a ton of other stuff. If you are interested in history she sells two great books about Arcadia on her counter. I was interested in the vintage Pyrex dishes in the hard to find turquoise snowflake pattern with glass lid. It is a rare color and even harder to find with a lid. The seller wanted top dollar and after a quick phone call she refused to budge on the price so I passed. I am still looking for a bargain. Although I left empty handed meeting Glenda was a highlight of my trip. There is so much to explore here and Glenda is wonderful about providing information on the items in her store and about Arcadia.

I googled tackle shops and Captain Ted's Tackle was closest. I was a little nervous that whoever worked there would have little patience with a newby. The owner Jeff greeted me right away and then spent the next 30 minutes asking questions and listening to me as I told him where I was fishing (off the dock) and checking out the rod and reel I had been using. He was patient and took his time with me even when another customer came in. He set me up with the correct fishing line , hooks and lures. He even took the time to show me how to correctly tie the right knots to tie for the lines. He even gave me his card with the phone number in case I had any future questions. Supporting locals businesses is crucial and I can promise you that I won't buy anything related to fishing anywhere but Captain Ted's Tackle. That's a promise.

I went with my son to get a rod and a pole. We had the greatest experience. Jeff was super helpful…read moreand taught us a lot. He took all the time in the world to answer questions and help us get the right equipment and learn to use it. The price wa incredibly affordable. I had to go back the next day because my son had an "accident" and he replaced the pole at no cost. He is a sweetheart and really knows and enjoys his business. You also have to meet Jack, his Boston Terrier who is always in the store and enjoys a little attention.

To ritzy and too glamorous for the Town of Lake Placid, I said. Nothing negative about the establishment - I just thought, well - it's Lake Placid. Nothing survives long in Lake Placid. I was wrong. Amber Louise Boutique survived and outlasted several different coffee and ice cream shops in the very same Plaza. Kate reminded me of this when visiting Lake Placid last night with her little sister Rebecca. Owing a house here since 2002 - and in town for an event - we visited this quaint little boutique once again. Kate even signed up for a rewards card. Women's clothes, jewelry, accessories and a bunch of stuff for anyone else but me, my 6 and 11 year old didn't have a problem spending money. After all, it's Christmas and the kids are purchasing gifts for themselves and their mother. It didn't hurt that wine was being served with Christmas cookies for a "downtown Friday" type holiday shopping event. Great job and cute little boutique, Amber Louise.
