I appreciate the wine and delicacies (née cheese) section as well as the fridge section here to Mid-City. I much prefer the parking in Mid-City to Uptown and that's a big deal, as in, even if I'm in the area and need to stop at WF for produce, oat milk, wine and nostalgia, I'll more often than not talk myself out of it because I hate that parking garage that much. The last time I stopped in, I had taralli on the brain and knew that I wouldn't likely find that at most Rouses, no less the far more conveniently-located food co-op that's in my neighborhood. And of course I found a decent variety, as well as a bunch of other goodies my regular Mid-City location does not have. Back to the parking lot. It's bad enough, people. At the very least, bring your cart back inside so that the next person doesn't have to move it before parking, which blocks the entire area and annoys the other cars waiting to park. You know this happens. Don't be that person.

A few months ago they renamed it Budget Saver, but it seems to have mostly the same stuff. The odd thing about Budget Saver is that the prices on the shelf reflects the store's cost. When you check out, they add 10% to your total, as the idea is that everything is sold at Cost + 10%. The end result is that most of the prices for dry goods are about on par with Walmart, or just slightly higher. For most items it is cheaper than Winn Dixie, which makes me happy. I typically only come here to stock up on fruit and vegetables, as they do carry fresh produce at a reasonable price. I still prefer Rouse's for my big shopping trips to stock up on whole wheat pasta, random spices/sauces, and other things that can't be found at Budget Saver - but for a quick trip for must-have dinner items, Budget Saver is good. They also have a decent bakery section and a deli with some hot food items, but I have yet to try any of that stuff.

What happened to this Rouses?…read more I've lived Uptown for nearly 20 years, so I'm well acquainted with the particular adventure that is grocery shopping in New Orleans. Our options have never exactly been endless, and with Winn-Dixie closing, they're getting slimmer. That makes it all the more frustrating to watch a neighborhood grocery store we actually depend on decline like this. And to be clear: I'm comparing this Rouses only to other Rouses. I've probably shopped at 10 or more locations around Louisiana, MS, and AL...and the Tchoupitoulas store is in a league of its own... The biggest issue is the overall condition of the store. It just feels tired, run-down, and not particularly clean. On my most recent visit, the men's restroom was genuinely awful: a visibly soiled toilet and...uh... a liquid...covering much of the floor that was very clearly not from a round of mopping. The checkout belts were dirty, too, and the floors and aisles rarely seem especially fresh or well maintained. The customer service can be equally rough around the edges. A few days ago, I couldn't figure out where to return my hand basket because there wasn't a stack of baskets at either entrance (there never is... and I don't usually need a whole cart; so I have to go to a checkout lane and search beneath the belt to find a basket). After shopping and paying, I left the basket I eventually found at the corner on the floor by customer service counter, which seemed like a reasonably civilized solution. An employee then mumbled a complaint about where I'd left it under her breath, but with the impressive vocal projection necessary to make absolutely certain I heard it. Mind you, I'd had to ask her for it off the end of the bagging area she was standing at when I walked in because it was the only one I could find. It was a small thing, but pretty representative of the atmosphere. And again, this isn't some sweeping indictment of Rouse's employees everywhere. I've been to other locations (including Morgan City) where the staff are consistently friendly and helpful but the store is also. Errr... in need of investment. That makes the difference here even more noticeable. The store is also frequently out of ingredients I'm looking for. In fairness, I can't pin that entirely on this location. Trying to find one specific ingredient in a New Orleans grocery store has always involved a certain amount of faith, perseverance, and occasionally driving to Metairie. Frequently at grocery rush hour (~5pm on weekdays) the lines are overly long when only 2-3 lanes are open. The few employees there don't seem thrilled to be there, either. Like okay, I get it, maybe that's not their dream job, either, but also maybe it has to do with corporate or management's culture? The person shopping with me on my latest visit, with absolutely no prompting from me, walked out and said: "Wow, that was worse than Walmart." I don't come to Yelp often to complain (in fact usually to boost a store or restaurant), and I'm not writing this just to pile on. This is a key neighborhood grocery store serving a large part of Uptown, particularly as other nearby options disappear. It badly needs some investment, better upkeep, and a general refresh to bring it in line with the quality of other Rouses locations. Uptown deserves a better version of this store...and frankly, so does Rouse's.

By 5:45 p.m. I could see that they were overwhelmed once again and went home to cancel my order. Hoping things had been resolved, I then placed a similar order Saturday evening for an 11 a.m. pickup (once again causing a bank draft of $150). I arrived promptly at 11 a.m. and waited once again with a FULL Curbside Pickup lot of over 30 parking spaces. Customers that had already been sitting there for some time began to leave while others also awaiting their orders came and left shaking their heads. Meanwhile once again no Curbside attendants were available and only one stood across from my parked car talking to a patron for over 45 minutes. Noting the time and that it was almost 12 p.m. I left my car to ask the one attendant what seemed to be the problem. I passed two other customers already disgusted with the poor service wishing me good luck with getting a REAL answer from anyone. As they left I crossed the lane and asked the Curbside attendant 'What is the problem with the service?' The attendant wouldn't look me in my eyes or even engage me with conversation. When I asked her name, she refused to share or even give a tangible excuse for the Service being so poor. She then went into a litany of how it was a 'Football Sunday' and the Computers were down', 'WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT?!?!' I stated that 'this has been two days in a row", She then began throwing her co-workers and Manager 'Under the Bus' stating that WM was short staffed, few people had come in to work, the Computers were down and then in some act of defiance in her mind looked at me dead on and said 'You are being VERY Threatening' !!! I stated that I have in no way threatened her, that I simply asked a question 'What is going on here" and 'What about the two orders now that have my bank account and monies tied up on separate orders that WM could not fulfill. I retreated to my car and began taking notes of her actions and after another twenty minutes my 2nd order finally arrived at my car and I was able to continue. I certainly had no intent to denigrate anyone that morning, I only asked for an explanation because I am a disabled retiree on a limited income and asked 'What was going on". I personally felt attacked for asking a simple question of how/why merchandise I had already purchased TWICE via bank draft was not delivered even once. At the same time I'm getting texts from a WM Home delivery service that two jars of spaghetti sauce had been delivered to my home.
