This was the 2nd year in a row that my husband and I stayed at Wellspring. I found it last year by accident when searching for a place to stay in Round Top, and I'm so glad I did! We like to attend the Shakespeare at Winedale plays (highly recommend if you're a Shakespeare fan), so late July and early August are times that we're in the area. I anticipate coming back again and again. Linda was out of town during our stay this time, but Sherri, labeled as "the best help in the world" on their info, proved herself to be exactly that. She took excellent care of us and provided a scrumptious breakfast! We met Linda last year, and she was very knowledgeable about the area (with suggestions of things to see and do) as well as telling us some of the history of the Depot. Speaking of The Depot, do yourself a favor and reserve it! I promise you won't be disappointed. The rooms are lovely, and even on a hot summer night, we went out on the deck and rocked back and forth while looking at the stars (we saw 4 meteors, the International Space Station, and several other satellites).

I was with two other gal pals and we were attending a holiday bash at our friends' family ranch three miles away; we didn't want to drive all the way back to Houston after drinking, so we booked our one-night stay at Night Bird Ranch. It's off the beaten path from the small town of Ledbetter, but that makes for a quiet and private retreat. We booked the Lonesome Dove and Hidalgo rooms; rooms were clean - recently renovated with plenty of towels, blankets, pillows, and a space heater for those extra chilly nights. We had two rooms with two twin beds - beds were firm. Bedding was comfortable. Soaps and shampoo/conditioner was provided, but it's the kids kind, so if you like your fancy products, pack your own. Kiki and her family live on the 70-acre property; she is a friendly host and we felt welcomed during our stay. Upon arrival, she gave us a tour and even let us assist with feeding the animals the morning we left. She also gave me a cash refund because they had a special discount rate for the night and honored that for me - without me even asking about it. Real hospitality! There's a dance hall/dining hall where Kiki provides wine, coffee, tea and snacks. Our stay included a hot breakfast, and it was fantastic! Fresh biscuits, eggs, sausage gravy, sausage links (and of course, cereal for the kiddies). Onsite there's a lake, acres of exploring, campfire station, and animals: three horses, 2 lambs, and a miniature donkey - and don't forget about Elvis the ranch dog! Love that Kiki and her family are animal lovers. Keep in mind though, outside dogs from guests are not allowed because of the many farm animals. My girlfriends and I fully enjoyed our stay and want to return with a group to have a little ranch life fun. I highly rec this for small groups, retreats, families (kids will love) and even those looking for a space to host an event, like a quaint country wedding or family gathering.

After dinner we sat on the porch and listened to the country sounds while Garth sat at our feet. The room was fantastic. Just the right size for us, furnished simply but with care to the details. We left before breakfast, but heated up some of our leftovers from dinner, in the dining hall, to eat on the road. There is not a more comfortable place nor more congenial hosts as those found at A Wild Rose Cottage. The property is beautiful, the home is comfortable and the breakfasts are scrumptious. There could not be a more Texan couple than Pattie and Steed. With luck, Steed will regale you with some of his stories about his time as a cowboy, a rancher and as a movie star in many recognizable films. Pattie is the epitome of a gracious hostess. Pattie, I want your recipe for the french toast syrup and strawberry preserves! Our family always enjoys spending time with them. The house is an old remodeled farmhouse, complete with a beautiful and comfortable claw foot bathtub. There is plenty of room for our extended family of eight. There is a small goldfish pond, swing and gorgeous oak trees everywhere. I only wish my home had such a beautiful front porch as there is at A Wild Rose Cottage. There is a beautiful stock tank on the property. I will forever have the memory of teaching my grandsons how to skip rocks on this tank. There are accommodations for a reunion, wedding or almost any event imaginable in "The Barn". Don't forget to check out the modern outhouse! We always feel safe, secure and welcome here.
