But- The City Council cannot manage the homeless because they ignore the effective policies of Vail along I-70 and Aspen in the Roaring Fork Valley. See the photo. Millions were spent expanding this park with big river rocks for rafts and kayaks AND a smelly sewage treatment plant. It could be fun if the smell of human feces doesn't bother you. I was unable (my bad) to upload photos of human waste and toilet paper. Disgusting. Given the number of off-leash dogs I saw, I expected better canine behavior. Instead I saw scary aggressive behavior and dog fights. Where is Animal Control? Safety laws are being broken. Please, as a dog owner, train your pooch or keep him on leash!
Wow. Beautiful park.

The park has several picnic tables, some in the sun and some shaded. A few benches sit along the river near some easy river access points. A swing set for the kids is located at one end of the park and at the other end is a set of restrooms with flush toilets but no sinks (or actually, there were sinks but no faucets). The park houses a couple of pieces of Durango's public art, one of which is a super cool whirligig named "Celebration!", if I remember correctly. Schneider Park is definitely a relaxing place to hang out in Durango picnicking and watching the river rafters float by.

Just $20 for an all day pass and access to classes, rock walk, indoor water park with slides and lap pools, splash pad outside... really great facility. We brought our own towels because it's a $1 rental and we had some in our car (a summer staple!). Best part was no sunscreen! Coming from Arizona and staying at Purgatory for the week to enjoy cooler weather, the no sunscreen part is pretty exciting. My kids rave about this place (now 11 and 13 years old). The rock wall is no joke, either! Unlimited access during open hours (special hours for rock wall, but generally closed after 4pm). Kayaks in the pool at 6pm on Wednesdays for a $5 rental? What is the Colorado? Super cool way to learn!

The forest occupies land in Archuleta, Conejos, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Mineral, Montezuma, Rio Grande, San Miguel and San Juan Counties!! They have plenty of campgrounds (with friendly campground hosts) and nearby Horseback Riding opportunities. I came here with a good friend of mine, as we visited South Fork, CO. The weather was perfect in May of 2021 and I needed a Chilly Mini for my neck. We spotted some gorgeous waterfalls and really unique plants. San Juan appeared to have had a forest fire in the last 5 years, because we definitely witnessed some aftermath. Lots of old, dead and burned down tree trunks. The trail is fairly easy, a little rocky, but such a great cardio workout for your calves. We spotted some wonderful rivers that kept my friend and I very cool.

Right now it's about seven miles long but there are plans in place to expand the trail at both ends. Along the way are several grassy parks (some with restrooms), a skate park, an off-leash dog park, shops and restaurants. River access points are plentiful so it's easy to put your inner tube in the water and float along until you're ready to get out and walk back upstream to do it again. Mileage markers have been placed along the route so you can easily figure out how far you've traveled. The trail ran right behind the hotel where we stayed so we used it frequently for dog walks during our time in Durango. One morning when in need of a trash can, I was astonished to discover there weren't any along that particular stretch of trail. As I began to look around, I was equally surprised to discover not one piece of trash anywhere along the trail. Excellent job, citizens and visitors of Durango!

It is mostly in good condition with about 20 percent with cracks that will give you a jolt. The final down river section has two modest inclines. Nice crossovers over wooden bridges. No bathrooms. Thank goodness for Albertson's right off the trail. Parking around Downtown is metered. About five-six blocks away from the river is free street parking. The white water launch park (in one of the photos) has a parking lot with a steam engine locomotive. Free or not I am unsure. Placards along the trail to note the development of the city. This park runs along both the river and a mountainside, offering views and extreme fun for any adventure pup. It was snowy, so we avoided what I assume is sometimes mud. The dog park is a bit funky to access by car, you have to walk along the highway to enter, if you park your car in the "lot" that is in front of someone's home. I like that the park has two very separate gates, so dogs will stay in the park until they're on-leash. I wish we could take our dog to this park daily!

If you have ever been to mountains or skied it's easy. It's a gravel mountain road. To clarify as I was confused there is a parking lot w small visitor center aka cabin. This is where you pay your fee. They are building a new super nice visitor center to open next year. The ranger here at base was so nice. I mean amazingly and went out of her way to explain all. From the first parking area you drive to the upper parking lot which is the base from which you hike to top. I was fine at 62 and not in perfect shape to get to top. It's a gorgeous view and the ranger/helper? at top was wordy but very knowledgeable. Now that we live in Albuquerque will definitely go back as it's a short drive under 30 minutes from Pagosa springs. Final thought those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it

There is a great view of nature from the 5th floor lofts. You can't necessarily touch it though. So in order to get our outdoor family adventure in, we walked across the parking lot to the fountain ponds on the side of the road. "ahh take it in kids. That there's fresh mountain air, and that there's an RX-350 SUV!" We went swimming. The floor was gross. They need to have a no-shoe policy. It was really just muddy and hairy. You really want to bring flip flops to avoid pathogens as the joint is too upscale for the traditional plastic shopping bags on the feet with bungee cords. The big pool was colder than normal. You never really got acclimated even after moving around vigorously under water. There is this great feature where you can swim under a wall and be outdoors. The sky looks amazing right at sunset. Would be incredibly romantic if not for the extremely cold temperature of the water. I noticed in other reviews there were some complaints about kids in the hot tubs... well if the pool were a little warmer, the kids wouldn't want or need to be in the hot tub. They simply can't stand the cold for very long. The room was just like your rugged cabin should be with a jacuzzi, wet bar, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and Netflix.

While the ski hill looks promising, we didn't get a chance to try it out. The price is very cheap($16 I think?) and if u are a beginner, I highly recommend coming here to practice rather than spend $60-$80 on lift tickets at the resort. They also have tubing on the other side. Lots of options so that was a plus. Now the ice skating rink...so the first thing that threw me off is that the concession stand and the rentals AND the returns are at the same place. So basically it comes down to, do u believe the kids working at the concession/rental actually wash their hands before handling your food? Mmm...Secondly, they were so short of skates I had to opt for men skates, then different sizes, etc. A bit ridiculous if u ask me. They were very old and to top it off the laces don't match. Now, I'm not trying to be dramatic but I lived in the northeast so I've ice skated weekly during the winter growing up. I believe I'm pretty credible to critique. Also, they don't check to see if u have paid. U basically just go in, so if I brought my own skates and I don't pay, no one would know any different! The lockers are cubbies so they are free but also open to the public. Now to the ice! They do not groom this ice! At least once mid-session, they should roll out the ice machine and groom it! It felt like the roads in mexico - bumpy! So, my suggestions for the city of durango, charge people properly and make sure they pay, charge for locker rentals, up sell food and invest that money towards better maintenance of your facility! Good luck!

Made us all look like pros. Some of the route was a little scary, near & overlooking the edge of mountain. But the horses did great guiding us safely through it. We would come back here again if we ever do the pagosa hot springs again.
