Its playground became the first racially integrated playgrounds in the city. The tennis courts are the home courts of tennis legends the Peters sisters. Signs throughout the park explain its history. The park itself has two playgrounds, tennis courts, restrooms, picnic tables and a trail that hugs the creek. Because of its location, it's a popular park for all people- families, runners, nature lovers. If you're hungry while at Rose Park, walk to nearby Stachowski's Market for a pastrami sandwich on rye bread that's two meals.

Kids may still have fun, but this is a subpar destination due to its lack of maintenance and all the noise from the expressway looming over it and directly adjacent. The adaptive swing has cracked plastic and doesn't lock, a merry-go-round thing barely moves, the slides are incredibly slow, etc. Tip: Eastern Market Metro Park near 8th and Penn SE is a better bet if you care about playgrounds. This place is OK for a picnic under the mature trees, if you don't mind the din of highway traffic. It also has an embankment on the western edge that is suitable for wintertime sledding. On the plus side, when my four-year-old and I were there this month, she spotted a rat trapped in the bottom of the metal trash can by the playground. So, although we would never feed pests, we showed mercy on the distressed beast. We got a good amount of memorable and free enjoyment by rescuing it from dehydration and heat exhaustion using an empty chip bag to lift it to freedom, then watching it scurry into concrete blocks under the highway. Ah, the simple joys, haha

Be sure to check out the playgrounds even if you don't have any kids. They have one for adults too. Getting here from Capitol Hill doesn't take long. It still seems like it's quite a ways away though. This also is close to the Navy Yard. One bad thing is that it can be noisy because of the traffic on the freeway. There's a concrete wall separating the park from Interstate 395, which is where the noise comes from especially when it's rush hour, so if you want a quiet and relaxing visit avoid coming here at those times. Other than that it's one of the best parks around. The playground is cool for kids. If you're an adult you also have your own place to play next to it. They have adult sized playground equipment so you don't have to worry about being too heavy to play on these. It overall is one of the best parks in DC. Other than the freeway noise there's a lot of other things to like about it. This is a nice way of getting from Capitol Hill to the Navy Yard.

Why anyone would pay for membership if they are not a student here boggled my mind. There are much nicer gyms around DC with better service and responsive management. Facility. Actually really nice. A couple of basketball courts, small indoor track, couple squash/racketball courts. The swimming pool isn't quite 25m so it's an awkward distance to swim but it works. Never went to one of their classes but seems like they had a wide variety of them. Cardio. Good number of treadmills and bikes but at peak hours expect to wait 30 min for a treadmill. Lifting equipment was adequate in non peak hours but during peak hours it's hopeless. Best way to describe it is: 1 squat rack (hopefully they added some more). They meet the bare minimum for weight lifting equipment for a campus body the size of GW. They at one point went from a dual lat pull down and cable cross set up to a single lat pull down without a cable cross. Also told me they didn't have enough space to make it safe for an extra squat rack which is a shame. Hours: during the school year they are just fine. Open all day and early too. However once you hit a school holiday, it shuts down or they run odd modified hours (people who workout during school breaks when the students go home typically work during the day and need to workout in the morning or late afternoon. However hours were routinely in the middle of the day when these people couldn't work out). They also shut down the gym for a week before each semester for maintenance and management meetings (very uncommon with other gyms). When I met with senior management I was told this was to keep the cost of the gym low. When I suggested alternate hours, I was told that they had researched when people go to the gym in the previous year (ironically I believe the previous year the hours were the same) and they believed they had the most common hours covered. When I asked about gym equipment cost was a consideration as well. Service/staffing. Despite this being an A-ok place to work out from a facility standpoint, this place gets a star off for service. Number of occasions of being frustrated as a customer. The floor staff (including managers and assistant managers) would stand and talk for a while (sometimes for my whole work out which is about an hour and change). This group could be as large as 8 people. A friend walked in on a group of them chatting away in a less commonly used staircase and they asked him if he was lost. A lot of time and resources wasted. Makes me wonder if the budget constraints mentioned to me could be solved by having less staff. They actually don't need that many people walking around during the day. In addition, staffing was feast /famine. Sometimes they would have 3 people monitoring weight lifters telling them to not drop weights and put clips on everything. Other times no one would be anywhere on the entire floor (especially on less desirable shifts like 930 pm on a Friday night). Almost seemed like people worked a certain number of hours and didn't matter when they did it as long as they had one worker checking in people and another person at equipment checkout. Cherry on top really was when I was swimming and was stopped in the middle of my swim and told I needed to get out 5 minutes before the pool was to close (pool clock was set 5 minutes fast and I pointed that out to him). When I told the young man I still had 5 minutes left, he told me it would take me 5 minutes to get out of the pool. I promptly left in 15 seconds. That young man did too. I have met with the senior management (including the Director) to discuss these issues and have talked with managers/assistant managers about feedback I had (and others had as well), but unfortunately everything was met with maintaining the status quo.

A great place to kick back and enjoy the beauty that DC has to offer. - Dog friendly: Rose Park is incredibly dog friendly, so if you dislike dogs, maybe...avoid? Haha! Luckily, most of the folks go go regularly, myself included, enjoy the pup presence! Feel free to take your pup off leash for a little run (if they are behaved). Just bring some bags to pick up after your pooch, as the park often runs out. - 2 Separate Playgrounds! Rose park features two playgrounds, one enclosed by a gate, and the other a bit more open. Both are utilized heavily by kiddos. I think that the enclosed playground is perhaps better suited to younger kids, and the more open playground is more appropriate for kids a little bit older. - Recently repaved running trail: There is a paved trail on one side of the park, great for running and connecting back to the nearby Rock Creek Parkway - View of Georgetown Row-houses: Rose Park offers a beautiful view of row houses that sit along the surrounding streets. Nestled in the heart of Georgetown, it is a great escape from the business of M street, and convenient to get to! - Meetings with neighbors and friends! Rose park is a great spot to speak to DC locals, and one of the few places where you encounter a true sense of neighborhood community. The population in Georgetown often tends to be a little older than other parts of DC, so folks have been coming to meet up with their friends in Rose park for many years. When the weather is nice, you will see people picnicking, and there is often a weekly "Yappy Hour" held on Friday, where folks bring their pups, wine, cheese, crackers, and snack while letting the dogs run around. - Market is nearby: The Rose Park Farmers Market often happens in Summer and Fall on Wednesday evenings and is set up on the basketball courts right in the park. This is always a fun and great opportunity to support local business. - Athletic facilities: There are a variety of athletic facilities set up in the park: 2 Tennis courts, a Basketball court, and a racquetball court as well! - Breathtakingly Beautiful Trees-- especially in the fall: The Ginko Trees that line the park make this a spectacular spot in the Fall. The trees are a VIBRANT yellow the likes of which I have not seen even when I lived in the northeastern states. The picture I took was actually taken mid-December of this past year, it was just stunning. - Cons: - Not so much a critique of the park, but please be careful not to step on the Ginko berries-- the trees drop them. The folks living around the park kindly do their best to sweep them off the sidewalks, but there are often so many, and when you step in them, they burst and produce a vomit-like smell, which will definitely make your shoes smell unpleasant!

The walk from Ladurée to The Phillips was only 1.1 miles, so I thought I'd walk it even though it was in the 80s. Rose Park was shaded and quiet, so it was pleasant walk through the park. I wish the path was all shaded. :) The trail needs to be repaved and it's not very wide but it was a nice respite from the heat. It's a nice park with basketball and tennis courts, a baseball diamond and a couple of playgrounds. This park was created for African American children in the 1910s and was the first desegregated playground in DC when Georgetown neighborhood kids started playing there as well. If you find yourself needing a break from the cobbled and crowded streets of Georgetown, take your coffee and food to this park and relax.
