It felt unprofessional and unsettling. From my understanding, this isn't standard practice during dental work, and I left feeling frustrated and unsure about the care I received. I think they overbook patients because I also had to wait awhile to be seen in the first place by the dentist. With a newborn at home I was not happy with the appointment running longer than I was told it would be.

Because I am new to them, most will demand their own x-rays even though I just had them taken months ago. A simple request of my two previous offices was all that was needed. Good thing I asked, Alice said the teeth whitener kits are $5. I bought two. The directions inside the package were just too simple so I went to the opalescence website and read everything. No where did it say NOT to leave the trays in overnight. I do not fault the dentist office. The next morning my teeth were noticeably whiter but my gums and part of my tongue were burnt from the bleach and hydrogen peroxide. It took just under one week to heal.

But most of the time was spent walking me through the $13,000 worth of dental care they claimed I needed, with the x-rays used as 'evidence". They recommended a 3-session "Deep Cleaning" that costs over $3,000, and five crowns. I have no insurance, so when I asked which crown was most urgent, the response was that all were equally urgent. Though merely "preventative." I requested a regular cleaning instead of the "Deep Cleaning" and they REFUSED to give me one. After previously telling me that would be part of this first visit. I've always had regular dental care from qualified professionals who always assured me that care options were my choice. And they all had the philosophy, "If it's stable, don't mess with it." It's very interesting that my previous dentist saw me 6 months ago and mentioned NONE of these problems. This leads me to the" conclusion that Gentle Dental is just trying to make a lot of money by urging unneeded treatments. My son looked them up on a consumer watchdog website and the vast majority of the comments said that very thing. Our bad for investing $100 in their "smile plan" up front. I called earlier in the day because my lower retainer had broken and was quoted $121 for the visit. Based on that information, I scheduled an appointment and came in prepared to pay out of pocket. When I arrived, I filled out all of the new patient paperwork and returned it to the front desk. During conversation, I mentioned that I had recently moved to the area and had started the process of applying for the Oregon Health Plan but do not currently have dental coverage, have not been assigned a plan, and do not have insurance cards. At that point, the office manager informed me that "by law in the state of Oregon" they could not see me because of the Oregon Health Plan. I explained multiple times that I am not enrolled in OHP dental and do not currently have coverage, and that I was fully prepared to pay for the visit myself. Despite this, she continued to argue the point and refused to move forward. The situation became increasingly uncomfortable. I then learned that the original price quoted over the phone was no longer accurate and that I would be required to take X-rays before anything could be done, which was not what was explained when I scheduled the appointment. By this point, I was already feeling extremely uncomfortable due to the interaction. I told the office manager that I had never been treated this way at a dental office before and that I was on the verge of tears because of how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there was no effort to resolve the issue or show any empathy. I ultimately chose to leave without being seen. I understand that offices have policies and insurance requirements, but professionalism and basic courtesy toward patients should always come first. This experience left me feeling dismissed, embarrassed, and incredibly disappointed. I hope the practice takes the time to review how situations like this are handled with patients in the future.
