What you want done, write it down on paper, have a signed understanding.
I was very enamored with this place when I went in. It should have a band playing, and a cappuccino bar offering. And the people seemed so cool.
I had a large wood coffee table for years. I had it in the sun, painted it, sanded it, stained it before and then stripped it. Then had it pulled apart from the base to create a desk top, and used the base to make a side table.
When I brought it in to Ross Allen, it was stripped and already made, except the design wasn't happening because the wood used from a friend wasn't old enough and slab-looking.
Ross listened to what I wanted. I kept saying..like an old dock that has sat in the sun for years... like Restoration hardware, a raw, plain piece of old wood made into a table. Raw, plain wood with only a protectant on it with no sheen, clear, no stain or anything. Matte. I showed them a pencil holder or something they had on their counter, like this, plain.
The top part of the side table would be of Ross's old wood, and wouldn't match my desktop, but the base underneath would match my desktop as they were the same wood from the same piece of furniture, so they would tie together....
I asked for the same measurements the side table was, except two inches shorter. The under shelf also needed to go all the way through, not halfway on each side. I asked for rivets on the top to kind of tie in the rivets that were on my desktop.
He did structurally exactly what I asked for, and I was so happy. The rivets were on the side, not on the top, but oh, well. For my desktop, I had him replace two strips of wood underneath with part of the older wood I purchased and make them shorter, which he did. Everything just needed to have the clear protectant put on it and that would be it. Yea!
He said he was going out of town, and could that be done next week. No problem, and I left almost skipping with joy. I liked how the wood looked, and asked a few times how dark would it get when we put the protectant on it, as I like the sun-bleached look now, but we have termites in our building and I know I have to put some sort of coating on it. I was going to try to find a scrap piece from when I had previously deconstructed the coffee table to get an idea how dark it would get. I didn't find my scrap wood.
A week or so went by.
I called on my way to work and Ross excitedly told me that he (I quote) "got inspired" and antiqued my table with some charcoal.
Without asking me first? "You mean like with dark-grey charcoal? Why would you do that?" I asked. He said I should just come and take a look at it
..... wanted raw, plain wood, nothing on it, no stain...
The next day I did, and it was bad. All black charcoal in every crevice of the side table top wood and highlighting a swirly design in the wood I had pointed out to him that I hated, but he highlighted it in charcoal. He has also charcoaled the base of the side table, so it no longer ties in at all with my desktop. I was pissed. I told him to take it off. And his response to me was anger. Yes, he was angry at me for not liking it. What an egotistical #%*hole. It looked like something pulled out of a fire.
Yes, he knows how to do amazing things with wood. But this was my table, and my design, and had come to him with a specific vision. He had just decided all on his own that he knew better than some dumbo like me what I wanted. He clenched his jaw and angrily said, "Well, you are going to have to meet me in the middle, because that is never coming all out. And I've already spent too much time on this." Seriously, this is what he said. Who asked him to do this anyway. No apology, he's mad at me? And later says that I "acted like he betrayed me". I left, and he was supposedly going to sand it.
I called to see how it was going and spoke to his wife and got upset, and couldn't even get out what he said to me about meeting him in the middle ? and spending too much time? I didn't change the job, he did.
I'm a creative person also, hence wanting my vision to be expressed. When I went in to see the sanding I apologized to his wife, I felt bad for getting upset. It's just a table, and they are nice people. Ross is there, and he just looked at me and said nothing. There's still black and I go back again and the base no longer matches my desktop because they had to sand it so much to get the black off. The wood is now bright and orangish, but the black on the front of the legs was left because (again, I quote) "No, Ross said you wanted that left on there."
I was told they were going to deliver the table the next day to me no matter what. Ross screaming at me on the phone "he's a people pleaser!" and "that's why I'm so successful!" That I should just shut up and go "be happy!"
Got a stained, antiqued table with correct dimensions, a discount I didn't ask for, but not my order. read more
