Kudos to the volunteers at Rosie's Place, however & unfortunately, the individual answering the phones provided inaccurate information that wasted my time & wherewithal getting to Rosie's Place. Moreover, the employee working at the front or the intake area was extremely unprofessional with her assumptions that I should have known the protocol & procedures in donating. Clearly, I did not as I was following the incorrect instructions provided to me over the phone. Nor be told in a condescending manner to "walk down the street to Goodwill or Salvation Army"...I walk myself back to the parking lot & along the street blessing individuals who were in need as I waited for my Uber. I applaud the charge of any shelter nurturing the betterment of others, expressly as a former shelter occupier & volunteer. Nevertheless, all employees/volunteers should know the basic processes when representing a temporary housing environment, specifically if there are non-wavering guidelines to adhere to. After viewing Rosie's Place website, I unreservedly celebrate the overall mission on behalf of transitional individuals. read more

Amazing resource for women in Boston, I love volunteering here with the amazing crew.

I've volunteered here quite a few times, and I think this may be one of the best experiences I've had. The staff is great about making sure everyone has something to do to help out. The kitchen has an open wall, so as all the women come in for dinner or lunch, you get to actually interact with the people you're serving. I've done everything from chopping veggies, serving the meals, stuffing bags with treats for the Halloween party, to good old fashion mopping. If you take the time, the staff will also be happy to let you know all the things Rosie's place is doing (from health clinics, to career counseling, to meals to clothing drives) so that you know you're supporting a truly great organization. If you get the chance to help out here, don't turn it down. read more

This rating is for the women who work at the front desk. Every time I come in they are very rude and have an attitude. All I ask for is my mail and they make it seem like I'm asking for so much. And then they make me wait almost an hour for them to give me my mail. She has to organize all the mail I get it but making me wait a whole hour when it only takes TWO SECONDS to just hand me my mail is ridiculous. I don't get it. Makes absolutely no sense at all. And she takes her sweet time with it too as if she does it on purpose or something. I'm changing my mailing address cuz I can't deal with this anymore, wasting so much of my time. Gotta do this on a day off cuz god knows how long I'll be there just waiting for someone to hand me my mail .... read more

I'm a huge fan of Rosie's Place and am a member of their "Friends of Rosie's Place" young professionals group. Rosie's Place considers itself "a sanctuary for poor and homeless women". While one of their services is to provide meals, they're not a soup kitchen. I volunteered at Rosie's Place when I was in college and I was very impressed with how warm and welcoming the volunteers and staff are to patrons. I make sure to always buy at least one gift from Rosie's Place Women's Craft Cooperative before Christmas. The Women's Craft Cooperative, employs women for their handcrafted work while providing critical job readiness skills. Also, whenever I go on trips that take me to a hotel, I save the unopened toiletry bottles (shampoo, soap, hand lotion, etc.) to donate to Rosie's Place. The size of these items is perfect for the women Rosie's Place serves, since many are homeless and do not have space to store larger sized toiletry items. I highly recommend volunteering or fundraising for Rosie's Place. It's an amazing organization and you just being involved with it in a small way will make you feel wonderful. read more

This is an amazing resource for homeless and poor women in Boston. Rosie's is not only a shelter, but also runs classes, distributes clothing, cooks hot meals, and manages a food pantry. Many women in my community have lived at Rosie's place when faced with unstable or unsafe housing. I have been lucky enough to volunteer at Rosie's food pantry. This is a lean and efficient operation. When I was there, it was managed by an experienced, smart lady named Maria, who had worked there many years. A few days before Thanksgiving, the limited stock was heartbreaking. Though 60 women came through, there were only enough cans of tuna for about half of the women. Rosie's is always in need of donations and volunteers. Is tuna on sale-10 for $10? Buy 10 for Rosie's! Organize a toiletries drive at your place of work! Donate your kids' old books! You will be a hero! This is a great place to volunteer with friends and a great place to do something important that benefits your community. read more

Great place to eat but if you are vegetarian beware they use lard on the potatoes and other things so you have to ask.

First, service is very good. Friendly staff. Price is competitive. Your sandwich bread is too thick (carb overload) and please offer croissants as a sandwich bread choice. Simple sides like potato salad would also be nice. More than one soup selection would be great for lunch. Vegetable soup plus a second soup choice. Breakfast is great but lunch needs an overhaul. I volunteered at Rosie's a few times, specifically in the dining room. Mind you, I am not a pleasant person. I really dislike 98% of the population. Yet, volunteering here was enriching and I seriously feel like it changed me as a person. Rosie's does not receive any government funding. It relies solely on volunteers and donations. (One can also donate clothing and unopened toiletries to Rosie's.) There are many different volunteer opportunities at Rosie's, but here are the details of my experience with the lunch shift. Upon entering, you will notice the dining room isn't just a cafeteria to have meals. It is more of a place where women can play with their children playing, meet with social workers or lawyers; and just chill-off the streets....warm and safe. Here is the down low: You arrive around 11 ish...there are about 10-15 volunteers per shift. You wear an apron and a name tag. First, you brew coffee and get the juice machines ready. You than set up the dining room chairs and prepare the utensils and napkin dispensers. About a half hour later the dining room opens. You start by serving soup and drinks. You can than chat with the women, hand out toiletries to certain women and even condoms. Than you serve the meals. I was the "spotter" ....basically I was handed a prepared tray (by another volunteer) and placed it in front of the ladies at the tables. Once everyone is served, you start to get the desserts ready and also chat with the ladies more. Seconds are served to those who need it and also a few ladies came in a bit late and were served. You are also able to enjoy a meal yourself. Finally, you clean everything. Wash the tables, do the dishes etc. You are able to leave around 1:30. Though I know the women there endure some serious heartaches and struggle, it was an edification hearing of their relief from Rosie's... from their grocery program, to avoiding eviction and receiving housing ....Rosie was there for them.....and I am happy to be there for Rosie's Place. read more

Do you want to be able to make an immediate impact while volunteering? Rosie's Place is where it is at. You show up, set up the room for the meal, start cooking, serve the meal, and clean up. It's that easy and I love it every time I volunteer there. Rosie's Place serves lunch and dinner to Boston's needy women. The kitchen and serving process is more than organized and the staff are extremely nice and really great with first time volunteers. Rosie's Place provides a high level of respect for its guests and volunteers, so everyone is happy to be there to help our or eat. This volunteer opportunity is not only for the ladies. Rosie's Place welcomes male volunteers and believes it as a way for their guests to see men in a positive role. Time flies and you barely notice you have been there for 2 hours. When you're thinking about getting rid of some clothes, jewelry, etc. I would suggest you skip the whole Goodwill option- why not support this awesome local charity. Plus, all of your items will be given to women free of charge- and it may really help them move forward in their lives. Plus -the staff was extremely friendly and helpful during my drop-off. If you are donating- their hours are only Monday through Friday, but it's accessible via the 1 bus. You may miss it if you're driving (like I did after about 3 circles around the area), but it's right off Mass Ave. on Harrison on your right hand side. There's a Goodwill down the block- but this is a much more worthy place of receiving your donation!! read more

A most gratifying experience! The staff at Rosie's is so very friendly and knowledgeable of the homeless population and their needs. What I love most: Rosie's offers counseling services to homeless and battered women... on the spot... right there when they come in for their meals. Also... contraceptives available over the counter as they get their food... very important. Let's talk cleanliness -- Rosie's is SO VERY clean. They keep up with all standards and serve restaurant-friendly food to Boston's female homeless population. It's definately a safe-haven for women who whose needs aren't necessarily being met. I was also very happy to see several transgendered people being welcomed, counseled, and fed with the other women as well. And... the kids. Well, there's a whole kids section for children to play, read, and eat. Absolutely wonderful and necessary for an institution of this nature. Rosie's Place has character. A lively upbeat feel good character. You not only get that from the staff who work here you get loads of it from the women who eat here too. First of all the cafeteria is a wide inviting open space. And the food served here aren't just for homeless women but anyone who uses Rosie's service and just needs a hot meal. Some are a bit down on their luck. In between shelters or housing. Trying to find work or in need of a little extra assistance. The staff are very energetic and happy to help serve their guests a hot meal. They do their best to make Rosie's guests feel comfortable. The women who come here are incredibly sweet and very thankful for all the help volunteers do. I've always gotten thank you's from the ladies here. Some even joke around. And you never have any of those awkward moments like at other soup kitchens where the guests shamelessly hit on you. Although there was this one time when a woman pretended to be in 2 different spots to get a second plate of food. But overall Rosie's is a chill place that welcomes its volunteers and guests. The food they make and serve is pretty good and you're welcome to some leftovers after everyone's got their fill. Another great place to donate your time. read more

You should volunteer here. Today. Tomorrow would be fine too. My husband and I volunteered at Rosie's Place as part of this year's National Day of Service and we are so happy that we did. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and only those with hearts of stone will walk away untouched by the incredible commitment to service and dedication provided by the employees and regular volunteers of Rosie's. Ben, the key staff person on site the day we volunteered, truly has a heart of gold and makes sure that every poor and homeless woman who comes through the doors of Rosie's Place is treated with dignity and respect. We helped serve dinner and cleanup afterward. It was the best four hours we've spent in a very long time. read more

Volunteered to serve a lunch meal with the family here and had a great experience and can highly recommend it. We had 8 people and they had another 4-5. Very well organized and smooth operation that allows everyone to contribute and get involved. We were there around 10/10:30 and left around 1/1:30. My second volunteer opportunity through Yelp Helps and One Brick Boston was at Rosie's Place. This was to provide lunch on Sunday. Rosie's Place provides a safe, clean environment for women and their children who need help. The kitchen is extremely clean and organized. There are quite a few regular volunteers, in fact only two of us out 12 were first time volunteers. The staff person running the lunch session, Brianna, was very well organized making sure to keep volunteers involved and busy. I went from peeling potatoes, filling paper napkin dispensers and that eating utensils were available, keeping clean counter areas around the coffee and drink dispenser, assisting in handing out sugar for coffee and then bringing out trays of the main dish to be served to the patrons, helping clean plates, cups, trays, then stacking chairs and changing out trash bags at the close of the dining hall. Whew! This was some serious work, but so rewarding. We treated every woman and child with respect and politeness and they did so in return (maybe one person may have not been so respectful in return). This is done seven days a week, dinner was well. I can't imagine how they do this 365 days a year, but thankfully they do. So please, if you can spare a few hours, and donate a few dollars, this is a worthy cause and you get so much in return. read more

This place is making a difference. They're giving the women of Boston a safe, clean, and healthy place to be. Not only do they serve meals, but they also have a really innovative set up as a food pantry and shelter that makes it seem more like a big home than a charity. The women are housed in two-bed rooms, and if you look on the site, you'll see that they are nice-looking and colorful. They also have a food pantry, but instead of getting a hand-out, clients can "grocery shop". They're given bags or bring their own. Then, they can peruse the aisles, much like you might at Shaw's, and pick things out for themselves and/or their families. There are limits on how many items clients can get, as well as restrictions on how many of what type of item. Still, the freedom to choose is a novel concept among organizations catering to poor women in the area. read more
