Was told that my 5 year old was too old for that class so he needed to attend class on a different day and time. Not ideal for a working mom but hey, not the end of the world! He came in for the 5-8 year old class and after the class ended, the instructor told us that he wasn't going to learn anything in her class and it's pointless for him to be there. Not sure what kind of teacher would ever say such a thing but especially since my 5 year old has been speaking Spanish and English since he learned to talk. Andie, the owner of Tribú, told me that if we put him in a French class at his age, he will soak it up like a sponge, especially if he is already bilingual. So back to picking him up and feeling confused about how a teacher can make an assessment that it's pointless for him to be there and convinced he won't learn, especially after he's only been to one class --- but I figured I could speak to the owner and get more information. What I come to learn is that the class is comprised entirely of 8 year olds! After being told he couldn't join his brother in the younger kids class - which would have worked better for our schedule, as I originally inquired about, I asked if there was another class we could try and never heard back. Not sure what's going on but I feel sad and doubtful this is a nurturing environment for learning based purely on the teacher and owner. PS when I asked my five year old what he learned in French the next day, he told me something in French!

I recently enrolled at Conejo Valley adult education for a certificate program for office manager in order to get back up to speed in order to support myself after my divorce is final. It is a scary time... but fortunately for me, Chris Wilson has been my teacher for the first two classes in my certificate program. He is so thorough and makes sure every student knows what they are doing. I suddenly feel empowered. Because I am not just going through the motions. I am re-learning what I knew so long ago after many years. The class projects that he gives us proves to me that I actually know what he's teaching. I did not think I would be able to get back what I have lost. It is apparent that Mr. Wilson loves his job and he truly is rooting for his students and is willing to help them however he can. I recently had an early meeting with my attorney during class hours which I could not change. So I ended up being over an hour late for class. He was so accommodating and came to me during class break and caught me up on everything that the rest of the class had gone over that morning. Mr. Wilson has been my instructor for the first two classes for my certificate program. I can only hope that as I move forward, any other instructor that I encounter at the Conejo Valley adult school will be as knowledgeable, enthusiastic and patient as he has been with the entire class.

It…read morewas the best Mandarin class for young kids (5 or younger) that I had experienced, and I have seen quite a few in my journey with 2 kids. Note that her Mommy and me class is likely quite different in setup from the pre-K class I experienced, so please do keep that in mind. Olivia set developmentally appropriate expectations such as very short "sitting down" sessions, and lots of hands-on activities with craft and music. She set basic ground rules, like taking turns to speak, but at the same time could gently but firmly re-direct rule breaking and knew when to ask TA or parent help with kids that needed individual attention without jeopardizing the lesson with the rest of the kids (the pre-K class was 15-20 kids). She used the pictorial nature of the Mandarin radicals/characters and introduced the class to over 100 in ~30 weeks. My daughter retains over 50 characters a year later but alot of it depends on consistent usage after they are taught. Note the class did not have quizzes or testing, hence review was entirely dependent on parent motivation. We probably reviewed class material 2 times a week (5-15 mins). Olivia knew how to hold the children's attention and had excellent rapport with the kids. The ability to make storytime interesting in another language is critical as it is easy for kids to tune out when it is a language they do not know. The class consisted of a mix of students with differing levels of Mandarin exposure (from zero to 100%), and Olivia was able to balance that and reach the students who were tuning out. She provided some English instruction especially when dealing with a child with less Mandarin understanding. A year later my daughter still runs up to her to say hello when they meet in passing. I especially appreciated that Olivia included activities that required all students to speak. They worked on introducing themselves, and talking about their favorite food and their family. This might be less of an issue in a small group toddler setting but is a common problem in the typical Chinese schools with class sizes greater than 15. My kids have a strong preference for their primary English language and without encouragement to speak they might go through the whole class without speaking a word of Mandarin. My husband who does not speak Mandarin found sitting in the class with our daughter to be fun and they would review the characters or phrases learned in class together. I wished her Mommy and me class was available when my kids were younger, as I would have been the 1st to signup! The earlier you start in the 2nd language journey the more easily they absorb which sets the base for success in the later years. I have added some photos of materials used because that's all I have now, but it's only a small subset of interactive activities she provided.

I literally never heard from her or anyone else again. Maybe they continued the classes on Zoom or something. I stopped by the school a few times but the door was locked. I'd paid something like $250 for 8 sessions and I did 5 or 6 of the 8. I contacted her about a year later after the horrid first phase of Covid was over, and she said she was sorry that we'd fallen out of touch and that I was welcome to return sometime. I think Irma is probably outstanding for one-on-one instruction. But after 6 class sessions, we hadn't really gotten very far, and I am sure I'd have had to pay her thousands of dollars before I was proficient in Spanish. I guess what I was looking for was something like a 4 or 6-semester Spanish class a couple times a week that wouldn't have cost me more than about $1,000 total (yeah, "good luck with that" in these times of inflation...) I actually did find this at Pierce College and it was way beyond bad - after 6 weeks of twice-weekly sessions, we were still on uno, dos, tres and learning how to use the verbs ser and estar. Anyhow, I wish Irma and her program the best, even if it didn't happen to work out for me personally.

When the class ended, I hired Irma to teach me privately, which she has done for the last three years. I have studied Spanish my entire life, and have had many teachers, but no one compares with Irma.  She not only has extensive knowledge of the language, but she is a very intuitive teacher who is able to assess her students and tailor the lesson plan to best suit their needs.  I also believe in Irma because she is very patient and thoughtful. Irma has had a tremendous impact on my life.  Firstly, she has helped me improve significantly my ability to speak, read and write Spanish.  Second, I really feel that the world is a more open place for me, because I am able to communicate with everyone in my environment, and speaking Spanish with native speakers immediately puts them at ease, opens up doors, and shows them respect.  I also feel that potential opportunities will arise for me because I am able to speak Spanish.  My Spanish lessons are extremely important to me, and I look forward to them every week.  If you are interested in learning a new language, School of Language Arts is the place you should go.

The resources provided in her program (medical assisting) we're not sound pedagogically, not androgogically. It is a very self paced program with little scaffolding. I could not get ahold 9f the placement person to ask about internships and job placement. There were very few students in the building during the two weeks of her trial. Did theyattend 8n the morning or did few come? The website is not very descriptive and cites 100% placement rate. That seems unlikely, tho I suppose possible. It does cost much less to attend this program than other local for-profit medical assisting programs, but I think you need to be a much more sophisticated learner than most high school grads without work or life experience. ((I find it truly abhorrent to charge as much as these programs do to enter a relatively low-paying occupation. There is a two week trial period, which is good. Unfortunately, when it looked like my mentee was going to struggle with the pace of the program, they just wrote her off and told her not to return until they contacted her and have not done so for over two months since then. To be fair, I'm going by her side of things ,but I have no reason to believe she misrepresented her experience with me. I was very disappointed for her.

There is no way I'd have gotten this job without the knowledge of the two excellent instructors in the class, Scott and Dennis, who have a wealth of experience when it comes to AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Revitt. My favorite aspect of the school is that you're treated like an adult. I'm in my mid-30's and haven't attended classes of any sort since my early 20's as I'm not a fan of the 'typical' classroom environment. Here you're treated respectfully and with and understanding that there are other things going on in your life while you're attending class practically full time(M-F, 8-4). It's a professional environment without feeling stuffy. I've been in the work force for 15+ years and the school is a nice proxy for what a working environment might feel like. Another great aspect of this school is that they want you to get a job and will fall over themselves to help you get there. I think I interview very well and have good resume making skills, but the experts at the school who help you when you're in the final stretch with these things were immensely helpful in making me feel prepared for the interviews I went to. I've heard other graduates say the same. All the staff here are very supportive and if you're looking for a fresh start and a new career, I really can't recommend VACE enough. it was a life changing positive experience for me and I'm sure it will be for you too.
