FInding a family doctor is hard, so when I moved downtown 10 years ago, I discovered that I couldn't find a family doctor, but I could be assigned to a Nurse Practitioner at WCH Family Practice. For those reluctant to opt for a Nurse Practitioner, I can tell you from my experience, it is better than a family doctor. Anything they can handle on their own is done quickly because you can see them sooner than the overbooked doctors, and when there is something they can't handle, it is referred to a doctor in the clinic or a specialist, so it is the best of both worlds. My Nurse practitioner retired last year and I ended up becoming a patient of one of the doctors in the clinic, and while she is a great doctor, WCH is a teaching hospital, so she is only in the clinic twice a week, so appointments are hard to get. However, WCH family practice offers urgent care appointments in the evenings, so if a doctor can't see you that day, you can see one in the evening, instead of going to a walk in clinic or emergency. The clinic is very accessible, something I appreciated after my knee surgery.

Had the rest of the conversation and inquiries with her standing between her desk and the door. She answered most but not all of my questions. But I didn't want to continue the inquiries anymore anyways, because her posture and responses made me feel like I was wasting her time. I'm not sure what to feel about her asking "Why would you?" several times to my conditions, to my past experience, even to just a piece of information about women's health practice that's not done in this clinic but commonly done elsewhere. Because I didn't feel much listened or attended to, I'm not sure whether I would feel safe to come back again if I have other women's health or sexual health related issues. My family doctor referred me to this clinic because of my chronic lower back pain. They have a chiropractic teaching clinic which I attend. There is a last-year chiropractor resident supervised by a supervising chiropractor. Supervision includes verbal review and video cameras in the treatment rooms. The charge is $100 for the initial assessment. A formal treatment plan is created. All treatments after that are free. You must be referred by a family doctor within the St. Michael's Hospital network.

Remember that along with checking you in, they are also answering the phone and email and a bunch of other things, so have some patience. For a downtown walk -in, the wait time to see a doctor is very fast. Doctors are great and will take time to listen to your issues. Now with COVID, you have the opportunity to send an email to have a doctor call you back and a doctor calls back within one hour! They can diagnose over the phone and even send emailed prescriptions to your local pharmacy. From Queen and Yonge (Queen subway Station), walk south until you see the Rexall, then make sure you are on the north east corner of Richmond and Yonge, then walk east. She's totally non-judgemental - I can tell her anything (and have!) and she doesn't even raise an eyebrow. She listens to my concerns and investigates them appropriately, but without ever going into over-cautious just-covering-my-ass mode (I work in health care. I know what it can be like). She has never brushed anything off as all in my head or "just nothing" and I have faith that she never will. She even calls me herself with abnormal results. Really. She's super. But that's not the best thing about Spadina Health Centre. Along with the great location (Bloor and Spadina!) and the friendly, competent reception staff, it is incredibly easy to book appointments (they can always fit me in within a day or two for urgent stuff and within a couple of weeks for yearly physicals) and I have never, ever waited more than five minutes to be seen at the clinic. Seriously. I'll say it again. I have never waited more than five minutes to be seen for my appointments at this clinic. If the horror stories my clients tell me are any indication, this is almost unheard of in Toronto. Sadly for all of you, I don't think that any of the docs at this clinic are accepting patients right now, so it's sort of unfair to even mention how fantastic they are. I called MCI; after spending 5 mins getting the RN to spell my last name correctly (it has ONLY 6 letters!) I was told the office is "closed" and I needed to call back at another time. If the office is "closed" why did somebody answer?! Why did they ask me for my last name?! Just a horrible place and I'd recommend you take your business elsewhere.
