Friendly staff. Great collection of memorabilia from…read morevarious wars on display as you walk in the main entrance. Pokies, sports bar, pool tables, cafe and bistro on site. Seems they have heaps of special days. Trivia, bingo, bridge etc. All available here. I ordered the $10 Rockling which came battered with chips and salad. Was a very small serve of fish, but for $10 I didn't expect much. Tasty. Chips were well cooked and salad topped with a tasty dressing. Dessert cabinet was full of different mousses and jellys. One cake type thing available but wasn't included as dessert available to the seniors I was with who got desserts with their meals. Victorian RSL branches really should look to their counterparts in NSW and start freshening up a little I think. Then they'd be more popular. But as far as a Victorian RSL club goes, this is alright.

There was an LED display out the front of the Rosebud RSL (Poppie's Bistro) advertising discount burger night. For this reason we chose to dine there. We weren't expecting that it would be false advertising to get diners inside. Now if you have a family with small kids (or you've been through it), you know there's a whole process involved with getting them in and out of the car - finding and putting on their shoes for the 10th time; battling with them about not taking a toybox worth of stuff into the restaurant; putting on or taking off their jackets; and so on. So picking the right place so you don't have to repeat that process over again, is pretty important. When we entered the RSL, we were asked to put our licences in a machine which records all our details. We weren't forced to, but the other option was to leave. We were left with the painful decision of giving up our right to privacy or dragging the hungry hoard around to try to find an alternative place to eat. I found the invasion of privacy to be slightly less onerous. So we continued towards the bistro, up to the sign that asks you to wait to be seated. Here we waited... and waited... and waited... while most of the staff were standing around in the kitchen area having a deep and meaningful. Eventually someone spotted us and yelled out, "go and take a seat, anywhere", while pointing towards the seating area. We sat close to the kids play room, so they could be entertained, and settled in. There was no burger menu on the table for their discounted burger night. We looked at the other options, but we were pretty set on burgers - after all, that's what got us inside. I went to see the lady behind the counter. She said, "it's a public holiday - we don't do burger night on public holidays!" I pointed out the fact that they had a sign adverting it out the front. She said, "well, we can't easily change that sign", and walked away to go and talk to the staff in the kitchen again. Rude and dismissive. We left to find a better place to eat. There's no way that we will ever knowingly support a business who condones false advertising, and makes things hard for families with young children.
