Foxey's Hangout is simply stunning and an absolute must when travelling through the Red Hill area - the view alone should be enough to get you there! We popped in on a Friday afternoon and the place was pumping, surprising for a week day! The service was fast and efficient and while we didn't get a seat outside on the deck, we got one right in the window so were still able to take in the breathtaking hilly views of the Red Hill country side. Foxey's offers wine tastings if you are on a cheeky tour, otherwise you can grab some simply yet delicious nosh to accompany your glass of wine, with all menu items costing $12. We ordered: + Bread with olive oil and pistachio spice + Mushroom sausage rolls + BBQ quail The sausage rolls were truly a standout and an absolute must if you visit. Looking for a quick gourmet feed on the way back from bush walking at Mornington Peninsula we made our way to Foxey's Hangout. Number 1 on the agenda a good coffee .... yes this is a wine cellar and the irony is not lost one me. The venue is great. A full height glass room facing south towards Red Hill overlooking the vineyard and cherry farm. It was lovely on a warm spring day, but i'm sure it would be freezing come autumn or winter. The food is essentially bread and tapas. I have to rave about the olive oil that came this our bread, it was quite special. We also had the spiced meatballs and some zucchini fritters. The meatballs again were great but the fritters tasted much more of caramelised onion than zucchini. By way of service, the staff were friendly and helpful ... you just need to hunt them down for assistance . For me this was fine, but you'll be growing moss before you get table service. BTW, the coffee was great and yes i'm going to hell for visiting a vineyard without drinking wine. read more

Our first destination - Foxeys Hangout - forget images of Wind in the Willows-style animal gatherings, the hangout here refers to a large tree on the property that was once 'decorated' with the decaying carcasses of that infamous farmyard predator, the fox. Owners and brothers Tony and Michael Lee have a grainy black-and-white photo of the sinister spectacle on the wall of their cellar door, however, the eerie image is soon forgotten due to the warm welcome, great wines (especially the chardonnay, multi award-winning shiraz and fortified shiraz - the latter, served chilled and with blue cheese, makes for a rich, sticky treat) and superb grazing plates. The former owners of South Yarra's Argo Hotel - one of the city's first gastro pubs - it's no wonder food plays such a central part here. With nibbles chalked up on blackboard wall, Tony and team turn out Med-inspired plates such as zucchini fritters, roasted capsicum and white anchovies, lamb meatballs and fresh bread dipped in a house-blend pistachio dukkah. Best enjoyed on the terrace, where the grass slopes away to reveal a valley studded with vines. The guys' laid-back approach infuses the place with a relaxed, chatty atmosphere that many other more stuffy wineries in the area could do with adopting. In our humble opinion, that is. And we haven't even mentioned one of the best bits - personalised sparkling wines? Yep, you heard us right the first time. While Tony tends to the still wines, Michael is busy out back with his méthode champenoise bottlings - transferring them from wooden stills to a deep-freeze (to turn the sediment into a solid), before disgorging and plonking them on the 'laboratory' bench, where visitors can customise their fizz by selecting the level of sugar content and, on a whim, turn the liquid pink with the addition of pinot noir. Not only that - the bottle is corked, caged and foiled in front of your very eyes, and a certificate issued naming you as a wine stylist. What excitement, and a great gift idea. read more

This is a very good dining option in this area. Sitting inside is nice. But, there's also a lovely area out back. Sitting here under an umbrella with a fine look out over the hills and vines is near bliss. It was superb here on a temperate day like today. We chose a number of the share platters. The bread with beautiful olive oil and pistachio spice is an excellent value dish. There's a good amount of very good bread provided. The oil and spice are of superior quality too. The asparagus dish works well. The spears are fresh, huge and cooked to perfection with a lovely residual crispness. The asparagus is combined skilfully with blood orange segments and goat cheese. It's a fetching fish. The meatballs are good too. Tasty and moist with a nice hint of spice. They were cause for debate though with my partner saying she preferred the ones at nearby Green Olive. Me, I like both. The avocado and pancetta with walnuts dish satisfies too. All freshness and quality. The combination works well. In addition, the mushroom sausage rolls with tomato sauce are terrific. The sauce comes with a nice little bit of heat. All in all, we really enjoyed all of the share dishes we tried. The coffee to finish was mighty. Top quality brews. Service was lovely from several servers throughout our time here and we thought the cost of the meal with several wines was also very reasonable. As I say, Foxeys is a very good option in the area. You could confidently wager a large amount that we'll return here soon. read more

Fairly average fare at expensive prices. I was quite surprised by the service. It was very cold and uninviting. The view was amazing though, but there are so many other wineries in the area with friendlier service and better menus. I'll pass on visiting this restaurant in future. read more

Won't be returning. Incredibly rude staff, too noisy, very overpriced, small portions. At first I thought I thought it was a nice venue. Polished wood and steel interior reminded me of what an Apple store might look like with restaurant and a view. However it's open floor plan with the kitchen, wine tasting and restaurant all in a small room no bigger than a double garage meant smoke from the kitchen filled the room and the hard furnishings reverberated sound making conversation near impossible. And this was before we even met anyone. Then we encountered the staff and service. When we arrived for lunch at 12.30pm the place was filled with people and food, but not patrons and those enjoying lunch. No, we were told we were too early for lunch and could not have a table because the staff were still prepping all the food for the afternoons service. Unorthodox considering the time. Instead we were ushered into a corner where a man clumsily poured us a few wines for tasting and pushed a bill for the samples in front of us to take to our now ready table. A casual waiter then sauntered over (who we later discovered to be the one of the brothers who runs the business Michael Lee) showing very little interest in our group briefly mentioned that "plates are small share plates and cost $11 each or the whole menu on the board (12 items listed ) for roughly $32 give or take a few dollars". This should have been my first inkling that something was amiss - how do you not know how much your own 'degustation' costs?!? One of the members of our group noticed the first item on the list to be bread with olive oil and dukka for $11 - bit steep but the waiter assured "its a whole loaf of bread". Another was quite keen on the last item, the blue cheese with maple figs so quickly checked that was included and this waiter rolled his eyes and nodded. Rude. Naturally we went for the degustation. In fairness the small plates of food were well presented and delicious but lets be straight, they are extremely small. Another note was that they brought out dish after dish with little or no time to finish the one before resulting in too many plates for the small table we were seated at and the waiter began taking away plates that were not finished. As the ninth dish came out a female waiter explained that this was the last dish. When we politely questioned about the remaining 3 dishes (including the blue cheese) she politely said she would check. The next moment the owner/winemaker/chef Tony Lee presented and rudely said "whats the problem here?". As members of the group all politely explained the situation he responded with an emphatic "rubbish" and proceeded to say "its a shame when customers try and squeeze every dollar out of a restaurant, which obviously you do, instead of just enjoying the meal". Never in my life have i been spoken to so rudely. At that point we got up, paid and walked out disgusted! And i can guarantee you this, none of the members of our party will return and it left a bitter taste in our mouth (mind the pun) for what should have been a pleasant lunch. A final point, not only is it natural at a venue where meals are extremely overpriced to work out the most cost effective way to enjoy a lunch but who writes a menu where it is cheaper to buy every item individually then the whole menu. May be a good wine maker and an ok chef but obviously has no idea about business. read more

This little winery/restaurant is the perfect destination if you're spending the day out on the Mornington Peninsula. The location is stunning, with a huge terrace overlooking the vineyard and cherry farm. We nabbed a table outside and took in the lovely view, then got around to ordering a selection of tapas. I was a bit worried because I have some temporary dietary restrictions due to my pregnancy and there were a few things on the menu that I couldn't eat. I needn't have worried as the first thing our waiter asked us was if we had any dietary restrictions. The entire rest of the meal was catered to my needs perfectly. My mini salmon steak was cooked longer and served apart from the other four. Goat cheese was served on the side of our tomato salad dish, and so on. I was really impressed by the care and exactitude that the staff took. I've never had food restrictions before and it has been challenging to go out to eat recently. All the food was fresh, seasonal, and tasty. Our selection of 10 or so tapas plates came to 30 a person, which I found reasonable due to the quality of the food and the very good service. I can't remember the name of the gent that walked us through our tasting but he couldn't have been friendlier or more knowledgeable about the wine and the west coast of Australia in general. foxeys is not to be missed. definitely stay for lunch! read more
