Behind the Buffalo Botanical Garden is a golf course. I never knew that, although I have looked at…read moreit often over the years. Just so happened when I stopped by the other day people were actually golfing, hence my newfound info about the golf course. Its part of an Olmstead designed park called South Park. Its one of the 6 "Major" parks in the Olmstead group (others are Delaware, MLK, Riverside, Front, Cazenovia). Three of those have golf courses, which are open and ready for you to come play. So I researched a little and found out that this park actually used to have the Botanical Gardens as part of it. The 155 acre park was designed as an arboretum, and still has hundreds of varieties of trees. They sold the Botanical Gardens to Erie County in the late 1900's, who now manages it. However they remain connected by land of course. In the park there is also a pond, aptly called South Park Pond. Its fairly large for a pond. You can drive around the entire park on Botanical Drive, which will allow you to see the whole thing, including the Botanical Gardens. All in all a nice part of the vast Buffalo Park System, beautifully designed, even if the golf courses are newer additions. Olmstead wanted the parks to be open and accessible to all, so he did not design them with golf courses in mind. Very easy parking along the roadway around the park. All the golfers I saw were zooming around in carts, so presumably there is a golfhut somewhere where they can park the cars and pick up the carts, but I did not notice that as I walked and drove around the park.

This is one of the most fun birthdays I have ever had and it is all thanks to Hatchets and Hops!…read more A group of us went out and it was so much fun. You get the instruction and the tips on how to throw the hatchet and then boom, you're off and running. (Not actually running, but you know what I mean.) The instructors are all great and really liven up the whole experience while also giving you tips along the way. This kind of activity really brings out the competition in people in the best way. Many of us had ever thrown hatchets before and those who had, aren't masters by any means. It was just a really enjoyable time to all try something new together. The drinks help too! Not with the throwing (I mean I don't think so) but with keeping the spirits high and having a good ol' time. The space itself is very big but with the cages for throwing, it can get a little tight with a lot of people. There is a bar there with some great beers on tap including the mystery beer which is always fun to try to guess. Food is limited to mostly pub grub but honestly, you're here to throw hatchets, not eat a ton. The pizza we had was good though so check that out. Overall, this is a really cool place to try out. And hey, if you like it, they even have weekly leagues here you can join and get better and continue the fun.

What I love about them is that they my toddler has access to toys and activities that are on his level with out me having to worry about big kids being too rough. Birthday parties are a decently priced and they recently got a separate party room where you can bring in your own food and drinks. I've brought my lil one just and hang out and we both had a ball. After a great bowling experience we decided to stick around and eat dinner. The staff were super friendly and the restaurant had a variety of tasty selections. I went with the Reuben and my girlfriend had a pizza. If you're looking for someplace to take a break from the winter blues it is highly recommended.

Betting is fairly easy. You can either go up to the window or use the machines. They had extra machines set up for Derby Day. The place was packed! Luckily, they were taking reservation. We were able to get a table for our group of 10 right next to the window. Perfect view for watching the live races. There was a slight issue with the food or should I say lack of food. They had 1 small concession stand set up, which sold hot dogs, roast beef sandwich,pop corn, and a few other items. The lines there were super long. Considering that most people got there in early afternoon & stayed until the Derby ended (7:30ish) they could have had more available. The spot where they sometimes have a buffet was totally empty.
