Rose Vineyards & Winery is a craft winery that opened in North Branford, Connecticut in October 2019. It was founded by husband and wife Jon and Ellen Rose with the help and assistance of their extended family. The Rose family is one of the oldest families in North Branford. Beginning in 1646, Robert and Marjorie Rose began working their land as a traditional New England farm with orchards and livestock. Today the farm is one of the oldest in the country that is continuously run by the same family. The farm now features a farm market building, a creamery that makes old-fashioned custard, Buck's Grill (offering breakfast and lunch), a bakery, and a maple syrup operation. For several years, members of the Rose family had an idea about opening a winery on the property. 12th generation family member Jon decided to make this idea a realty. Beginning in 2017, several members of the Rose family assisted in planting the vineyard while a winery building was built on the property by Al Rose Construction. Jon and Ellen run the new venture as co-owners and co-vintners. At Rose Vineyards, the staff focus on viticulture, enology and wine education using the best environments and sustainable practices while ensuring the highest quality. My family and I recently visited Rose Vineyards for the first time. This came just a couple of days after we visited Rose Orchards Farm to pick strawberries. We had heard several good things about the winery since it opened. The vineyards were beautiful and the new winery building was very impressive. In addition to the delicious wine, the building also has an on-site kitchen that prepares farm-to-table dishes. We saw several delicious charcuterie and mezze platters coming out of the kitchen during our visit. However, we were there for another culinary treat: PIZZA! In the warmer months, every Thursday night is "Pizza Night". We picked a table right outside on the patio next to the wood-burning oven. To drink, I ordered a glass of "Pinotage" while my wife ordered "Symphony". Both were excellent wines! For pizza, we all ordered and shared the "Pepperoni" (pepperoni, San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, EVOO), "Truffle Burrata" (burrata, spinach, parmigiana reggiano, truffle pesto, EVOO), "Lobster" (lobster, ricotta, fresh mozzarella, tarragon, roasted tomatoes, garlic, pernod reduction, sarvecchio cheese), and the "Nutella" (nutella, strawberries, powdered sugar, toasted hazelnuts) for dessert. Every single pie was excellent!! Before leaving, I had a glass of their "Cabernet Sauvignon" which was very flavorful! This place was packed on a Sunday afternoon. I was a little worried about parking but the lot was bigger than it looked and there was plenty of space. They had a corn maze, pumpkins, apple orchards, and a variety of animals! I didn't do the corn maze but I enjoyed seeing the goats, pig, chickens, turkey, and even a yak. They had no issues with you feeding the animals and sold some food for a quarter. I was initially disappointed that all the apples were gone because the trees in the front were completely bare but once we got a bag and saw the map, I saw that the land was quite spacious with every variety of apple you could think of. The front rows had been picked clean but there were plenty to choose from in the back. They charged by the pound. For a few apples, we paid about $6. They had a ton of apple pies and some flavors I had never heard of before like apple caramel walnut. Had such a good time. read more

Found this charming winery right in the midst of a bad experience with a winery up the road. We were so happy walking toward the beautiful partially covered patio. Service was prompt and efficient and knowledgeable. Husband and I each tasted 6 different wines. All but one was great, and decent pours for a flight. The only negative was that we opted to split a hot pretzel and it was REALLY HOT; probably from overdoing it in a microwave, because as it cooled, it took on the typical microwaved bread tough texture. However it was so much better than where we had come from (Bishiop's Orchards "Winery") that we didn't complain! Will definitely revisit! read more

It's not a summer night without getting some yummy ice cream/dessert from Rose's! I've been craving their blueberry pie alamode since last summer! The pie is so warm and yummy, and the ice cream is the creamiest soft serve I have ever had! The staff that run the shop are friendly and helpful with suggestions. I was curious to try the menu again after so many years. The custard was too heavy and sweet for me, but that goes for all custards everywhere. There is lots of parking, which is great. Within minutes, the line was nearly a dozen people of all ages! The server was quick and patient. The frozen yogurt was spot on. I had vanilla and strawberry swirl without any bells and whistles so I could actually taste the flavor. The outdoor eating is covered but very sunny and bright. It's nice to relax and watch the animals (goats, pigs) as well as see the food growing. There was even a plants for sale outdoors. I am curious to see what is inside. Next time! read more

It was ok... we weren't blown away... unlike last year, our Airbnb was next to a orchard near Mohegan Sun... with amazing fresh baked goods... delicious blue berry pies, apple turnovers, apple pumpkin crumbs... ugh... was really hoping for the same quality. Rose orchards offers baked goods but... truly, a bit lack luster in the quality of the pies. I had the blue berry pie.. and not sure why the pie crust was overly salted. Really enjoyed our lunch here today! I got a meatball sub and my husband got the grilled chicken ranch and bacon sandwich. The meatballs in the sub was moist and well-seasoned. This is a small farm. I was there only for the ice cream. I liked the hot fudge with custard the most. Fudge was rich and heated up to the right temperature. Vanilla chocolate was creamy. Vanilla pumpkin yogurt was ok. They have a small grocery store attached. I didn't get veggies from there though. read more

As a tradition, my family and friends meet up every year there we've always had a wonderful experience this year was horrific. The price is increased ridiculously Buck Grill. I ordered a steak and cheese sandwich and a veggie wrap for my daughter. They were literally an edible 30 bucks and I couldn't eat it. The steak was dry. It smelled funny like freezer burned. My daughter's veggie wrap was or mush. How do you screw up a veggie wrap when I complained to the manager she looked at me and walked away. Very rude. The feed for the animals would take your quarters but never give you any feed. We ordered ice cream for the kids. They didn't finish it. I asked for lids. They said they didn't have any. I know prices increase everywhere but eight dollars for a hayride that's not that long of a ride is ridiculous. People come with multiple children And can't afford it. The experience this year was horrific. I'm very disappointed. read more

So many incredible things to eat whether you're at the orchard or vineyard and restaurant. The orchard and market have so many fresh foods to choose from. Of course I love the locally grown produce, but the cannoli pie is my favorite. The new vineyard and restaurant is incredible. The wine is excellent- great varietals to choose from (try the symphony and the marquette!) and the menu is overwhelmingly delicious. This place has a little something for everybody. Outside the kids can enjoy all the little animals. I think they also have a hayride and corn maze but haven't tried either yet. For years it has been my go to place to stop and get a pie. I highly recommend the fruits of the forest pie and the peach berry. With advanced notice I believe they also do a few sugar free pies. Over the years they've definitely expanded their offerings! Inside, they have a small market section where produce and other food products are sold. Recently, inside they added Buck's grill which serves breakfast and lunch . Things like breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, salads. They have a little seating area outside to enjoy their frozen custard. You have to try the custard so soooo good! Hope next time I have a chance to checkout the winery. A beautiful winery! Living on this road has made me very impatient and curious watching this building go up, but it was sure worth the wait. The Rose family did an excellent job. The parking lot is wide and plenty of space is available for many cars to park. Do not let the outdoor seating fool you by seeing that little deck. When you drive up, there is a beautiful patio to sit and look out on the winery and the orchard across the way. The wine is delicious. They have many varieties and it's so unique how they sell their own aerators for wine, and other products as well. No food is allowed because they have a full functioning kitchen with gourmet chefs. The building itself is beautiful inside and out and has so much room and beautiful ceilings with chandeliers. If you're looking for a day on the orchard, and then a glass of wine with friends, this is an amazing place!! I love it and I've only been once on grand opening. I took my two year olds here for the afternoon. They loved seeing the goats, ducks, pig, and chickens. Great little pumpkin patch and hay maze that wasn't too big. Most of the staff is friendly except for the waitress we seemed to have gotten that evening. Like other comments said the wine is barely mediocre. Had a party of ~12 people and we order 5 bottles of wine. One of the wines tasted vinegary and sour. The whole group tasted it and it tasted like it went bad. When we told the waitress, all we got back was attitude and her tasting it saying "well that's just how it tastes. It's good." I wouldn't waste your time here Gouveia in Wallingford is 20 minutes away and much better. If they act that way about their 30$ bottles of sour wine then I wonder what would've happened if we ordered food not prepared right or tasted bad. Best frozen custard. So much smoother than regular soft serve ice cream. In addition, their pies are so flavorful and delicious. A little on the expensive side, but the quality is worth it; both the fruit that's in the pie and the crust make it worth it. Highly recommend for both the custard and the pies! read more

Super cute farm to visit on a weekend afternoon. We came here to do some berry picking but unfortunately they just went out of season. We ended up picking apples instead, they had a wide variety (about 6 or 7 types) that you could pick yourself and pay by the pound. The frozen custard here is amazing! Be aware that the regular sized custard is freakin huge. We got one each and it was way too much... made us feel pretty disgusting and fat afterward. I would recommend splitting a regular sized one between 2 people. The custard is super dense and creamy. Really delicious :) They also have a corn maze you can go through for $5/person. We went in and stayed for like 20 -25 minutes. read more

Attended the grand opening and was pleasantly surprised. Facility is quite nice. Somewhat deceiving from the outside. Wine was decent for a CT vineyard in it's early days of operation. Look forward to their first harvested vintage next year. Food experience consisted of cheese and charcuterie. Meats were tasty and abundant with nice accompaniments. Cheese selection was also nice though portions were smaller than I would have liked. I will hold off on any further review as the grand opening was a bit of a madhouse (in a good way) given an "open house" celebration on a beautiful fall day. Actually quite happy to see the attendance. The fact that they will be open unto 9 on Thursday and the weekend is also great. We will definitely look to go back soon. The apple pie a la mode is absolutely perfect. Flaky, crunchy crust. Not too sweet filling. They warm up the slice for you and top it with the thickest, creamiest vanilla custard. They do run out of pie flavors (originally wanted peach), so have a back up ready! Whatever dessert you get be sure to enjoy it on one of the benches near the wheel. It was a lot of fun watching the baby goats and rabbits running around in the fenced area. Overall, great place to enjoy a warm summer day. read more

I've been coming here for a few years now as a family tradition. This last visit upset me unfortunately. My family and I decided to pick 3 apples. One for each of us. We purposely did not get a bag because we didn't want to be charged for it(stupid to charge for bags anyway) and when I checked my receipt at home the register clerk charged me for a bag none the less. The bag was more than the Apples. Word of advice. Jack up your Apple prices by 10 cents and stop charging for a bag. That's just silly. Especially when you charge your customers for something they didn't want to begin with. read more

Some of the best custard around!! Been coming here since I was little visiting my grandparents. They have delicious custard not to mention huge portions!! They also have awesome hard chocolate shell. There's also a pumpkin patch and animals that you can take your kids to see, a farm store and so many other awesome things. This place is also super dog friendly! They'll give you some custard for your pup and he's more than welcome to sit with you in their seating area. In fact, my dog wasn't even the only pup there!! So everyone has been telling me that THIS is the place to get pies and frozen custard and as much as I trust my foodie friends, I had to check it out for myself. I went at around 11am on a Friday and the place looked deserted. I enjoyed watching the antics of the resident goats and I had full run of the place. There were a few pies on the shelves and I seriously doubted that THIS was THE PLACE. The chocolate frozen custard IS good and people come from all over to enjoy it. Silly me, I actually prefer Stew Leonard's. HOWEVER, the pies are another story altogether!!! I thought to myself that the pastry looked somewhat light and I worried that it might be underdone. I couldn't have been more wrong! I chose a somewhat odd combination of Peach, Cherry and Blueberry. The filling was glorious! Each fruit retained some integrity and together they sang a harmonious chorus to my taste buds. The pie crust was buttery and had a hint of salt that thrilled my soul. I haven't tasted a better pie in a very long time. After discussing my experience with my friends, they told me that you must order your pies well in advance for holidays and on weekends the place is very busy. Beautiful, pleasant family oriented place! Went here on a Saturday for pumpkin picking and it exceeded my expectations so much that I spent the whole afternoon here! Pumpkins were in great condition and an UNBELIEVABLE deal! I thought their scale was broken because the price was so cheap! They are already picked because the pumpkins are grown a ways away, but still a very enjoyable experience. You can bring your dog and they provide wagons for you to lug your assortment of pumpkins in. They also have a little hay maze to take your little one or your dog to. On top of that they had apple picking (price by the pound, mix and match as many apples varieties as you want!), a corn maze, goats that you can feed, and delicious refreshments! We were able to do all these activities with our dog! We tried some seasonal treats. The apple cider milkshake was to die for!! The Apple cider donuts also good, but no need to get it with the custard on top, I think they are better by themselves. read more

Anyone who works with the special needs community should steer clear of this place we took our students there to get ice cream. After a very nice hike at the park up the road from there. While waiting in line we could hear the manager inside Mother Fing us and when something was said to him he says "we don't care that they're disabled we don't want your business." What a cute little place! First of all I think it is hard to find good frozen custard here in New England, and the fact that this little place can churn it out in both sift and hard serve tells the whole story. All flavors are on POINT. The strawberry tastes like frozen Strawberry Quik..the vanilla (my personal favorite) pure butterfat and the chocolate is rich and decadent. And then you have the store full of local produce and home made goodies! Pies, cookies and cakes...we got there pretty late (1/2 hour before close) so things were pretty picked over, but I can just imagine how wonderful it must be when you have full range selection to choose from. You can spot this little orchard easily right on Rt.139. The view here is surreal, as you see the trucks and cars whizzing by on one side the road, and then this rustic, bucolic setting on the other. Beautiful apple trees are planted row by row, right behind a charming little water mill. Two tiny trouts live in the man-made pond. A gated fence holds some animals that children can feed and pet at leisure. An old pony, a calf, a few goats, and llamas hang around lazily, staring at onlookers while hoping for some snacks. At this farm you can pick your own, or purchase their pre-picked produce. I managed to find great organic strawberries, bartlett pears, and habinero peppers along with gourmet quality granolas. However, not all items here are the freshest, as you would expect from a farm, and their choices are a few. But this place isn't just about the food (although they bake various fruit pies that smelled delious as I shopped). Here, it's all about having fun with the kids. For this autumn season, there is a hay maze where kids run and play, a pumpkin patch where kids can choose their own pumpkin, and an ice cream creamery where they serve better vanilla ice cream than does Dairy Queen. I've always loved coming here with my json. He loves to pet the goats and feed them and watch the chickens. There's a nice farmers market with fresh apples and lettuce and delicious pies. But they've really stepped it up recently. They've added a grill so you can get lunch. The food is pretty good and it's nice to be able to spend the morning then have lunch. For the fall, they've got a pumpkin patch, a nice hay maze and corn maze, great pumpkins. I think they have hay rides as well. So it's a nice farm market with plenty of fun for the kids. read more
