A lighthouse to work and not just look Rose Island Lighthouse was completed in 1870 and was built on the remains of old Fort Hamilton. Rose Island lays about half way between Jamestown and Newport and the light was abandoned around 1971 when the Newport Bridge made it redundant. It laid decaying until a group of dedicated individuals decided to not only restore it but actually turn it into a bed and breakfast. The light was relit in 1993 and has stayed on since. It now looks like it did in 1912 but it is definitely not your traditional B&B. You can stay there overnight or for a week but not as a guest but as an actually lighthouse keeper, with work and responsibilities. Lots of little chores and items that require your attention and although there are plenty of people around during the summer months if you choose to stay during the winter it is possible you will be totally isolated on the island. Rose island is about 18 acres but the nesting and quite aggressive birds take it over during the summer, so until Aug. 15 you are restricted to a small part of the island. I have seen not only the ubiquitous gulls, but egrets, herons, pterodactyl like ibex and even rare oyster catchers. No electricity reaches the island so solar panels and a wind turbine makes it self sufficient. Water is precious and people are encouraged to use the outside bathrooms. No simple push, you have to pump the toilet to get it to flush, just like in the good old days. People are allowed on the island for shorter visits and it can be reached either by kayak or the Jamestown Ferry. They usually charge 4 or 5 dollars to get in but it is easily worth the price to see the inside of the lovingly restored old building. There is even a small gift shop to buy cool shirts, books or trinkets. If you like lighthouses, it doesn't get any cooler than this. You don't only get to see the lighthouse, you can go in it and even live in it for a short time. Where else would people actually pay to do work? This is an absolutely unique and unforgettable experience. I've included a link to the foundation. http://www.roseislandlighthouse.org/

Rose Island Lighthouse in the distance!

During our latest visit to Newport, Rhode Island, I heard about this lighthouse. Who doesn't like lighthouses! They are just so cool! I could see the Rose Island Lighthouse in the distance from our cruise ship. What makes this lighthouse unique is that you can sleep here. You have to work though. There are three programs available. Check out their website for details. We would love to stay here and enjoy the experience. It would be awesome to do some lighthouse keeping and have a vacation at the same time!

Friends in town and wanted a nice relaxing place to enjoy a meal. Not too busy for a midweek night…read more Had both bar or table seating available for quick seating. Sandy was our amazing server, provided great recommendations and very attentive to her respective tables. Cocktails were great, antipasto was a great start not too much to leave room for the main and desert! The focaccia was light and flavorful as well. Had the rigatoni bolognese which was prepared perfectly and had great flavor. Nearly licked the plate clean! Saved a little room for desert with both cakes being tasty and washed down with an espresso martini. Lovely place to have a date night or night out with friends!

She was nice enough to let me try them and I chose the Trevino which was very good and paired great with my food. The bread was nothing special but solid and the high quality olive oil made up for it. For my main I got the chicken milanese and it was divine. I loved the vinaigrette on top perfectly acidic and vinegary. It cut though the oil and heaviness of the breading which was perfectly salted by the way. The arugula bean salad was sooo good and created such a well balanced meal. The one thing I will say is I believe their fryer does fish and chicken bc my chicken had a slight ocean taste but since I like fish I was not bothered but non fish people beware!

SPECTACULAR! 4th year in a row here during the conference we go to for our continued medical…read moreeducation credits. I think this place should have 5 star rating! Every time we come here the service is excellent and the food is amazing. This is what we come for right? Outstanding food and service! This year was no different than the other years and I love how the menu continues to evolve and change and everything that comes to life from the menu to the table is well thought out and bursting with harmonious blends of flavor. The presentation is gorgeous too! Plating is also important and they nail it! Okay let's gooooo! Come join our dining experience! We tried a bit of everything! We loved every bit of it. I'll mention my faves but that doesn't take away how hard it was to choose a fave! Everything was DELICIOUS ! Raw bar: Jamestown oysters . We had 10. We can't get enough east coast oysters. We live in the west side and I cannot say enough how much better oysters are on east coast! Slurp ! Mmm! Snacks: 1. Shartner's Farm Carrots: pea green pesto, pine nut, n'duja . If you're a meat, potato and pasta person and try to avoid your veggies, don't do that here. GET IT! It's such a great melody of textures and flavors that pair well. It doesn't feel like you are eating carrots and regardless it's a very dressed up bougie delicious carrot plate ! Mmmm . One of my faves out of the snacks. 2. Narragansett Creamery Burrata: green strawberry, speck, basil. Creamy, vibrant and just delicious Pasta: only had room in our tummies for 1 but every year we try different pastas and never disappoints. This year no exception. Maltagliati- hopkins southdowns lamb sugo, swiss chard, harissa, umbrian chickpea. Excellent! Pasta was perfect texture and consistency!! Little touch of spice from harissa which I loved (not overpowering). The Swiss chard was cooked to a crispy texture which I loved. I was a bit nervous about the lamb because it really can vary from place to place. However, I should have known better being from here they cooked/braised it to perfection: melt in your mouth type of soft and no weird or gamey taste. Definitely delicious pasta I recommend. Plates: 1. Duck Leg Confit- japanese turnip, spigariello kale, huckleberry conserva, duck jus. Personally my faves of the two plates but both delicious. The crispy skin from the duck and tender flavorful duck meat was just to die for. Loooooved. Plus the turnips and the amazing huckleberry conserva! Thinking about it makes my mouth water. So so good. 2. Beef Short Rib-swiss chard erbazzone, sunchoke, hazelnut. Loved it. Tasty as expected. Great flavor and tender. Dessert: 1. Olive Oil Cake- strawberry, rosé, lime curd, basil gelato. Wow! Oh wow! I'm so happy this time around they have some cake options. I love olive oil cake and now to pair with a basil gelato sounds insane right? Holy cow! Soooo good! Not what I was expecting. Strawberry, rose, lime and basil gelato flavor all work well together in this dessert. My fave dessert of the night! TRY IT! 2. Cookies N' cream: narragansett creamery ricotta, chocolate biscotti- yummy! Tasted like an elevated cookies and cream ! We loved our experience! Hopefully when you visit here, you can enjoy it as much as we do year after year. I absolutely love this place. Food is beyond excellent and is a place you have to stop by and visit while in Newport.

Another great dining experience at Giustos. I have to admit this is one of my favorite restaurants…read moreon the island. The food; amazing, the flavors amazing. I tried the Cacio de pepe fried potatoes and they were so good. Beautifully fried and the potatoes texture were light and pleasantly dried. For my main course I had the tonnorelli pasta with a green garlic sauce which is my favorite. Only available during early spring when the garlic is young and green. The flavor is mild not too garlicky with an herbal earthy flavor. One of the best pasta dishes I've had. Dessert was olive oil cake with a minty flavored gelato. Everything is made in house. Service is great, everyone is so welcoming and the vibe so calming . Can't say enough about this place.
