This was a nice overlook, though you need to consider the season.
We visited around the 2nd week of May. It was literally the first day that some of the adjacent shops were opening for the season. Overall, the place was deserted, though indications were that it could get crowded in the summertime.
There is an adequate parking area below the cliff. You then ascend some stairs and pass between rows of tourist shops, with a restaurant at the far end. The overlook is a further short climb to the right.
Once at the overlook, you can see the cliffs and read about the history of the area. You can also see the Gay Head Lighthouse, which can be reached by a path adjacent to the parking lot. The lighthouse is open to the public during the summer, for tours.
The signs indicated there was a trail down to the beach below the cliffs, but it was unclear to me where the trailhead was located. In season, I'm sure you can ask the local staff about it.
The only drawback to this site is that it is at the extreme western end of the island, at least a 30-minute drive from the main towns. However, I think it was worth it. read more
