Certainly one of the better Pubs in the Gillingham area and best in Rainham…read more This used to be the Pub of choice when we were living in the area and going out with friends, although not being big drinkers that didn't happen too often. It's a good size, the staff were friendly (a rare thing in Rainham!) and best of all, it was just 2 minutes walk from our house. The Thai restaurant attached to the Pub was also pretty decent and a great place for a meal before a night of drinking. A little history of the building is that the building itself was built in the 14th century making it one of the oldest buildings in Rainham and during the building of the home next door a passageway was discovered that ran all the way from the cellar to the Church. It's also common knowledge with locals that it once was a coaching house. So if you're in the area looking for a decent place to drink The Green Lion is top of my recommendations. They also hold a late license on weekends (Friday and Saturday) where after 11pm the entrance is at the back of the building next to the beer garden.

The food was nice, but not spectacular -- I was given a pale-looking baguette with a rather mediocre salad (although I'm not sure one leaf and a slice of cucumber counts). The chocolate fudge cake I had was fantastic, however, and I count myself as a good judge on those. The atmosphere was friendly, and it was in a good location, being near the station. Very suspicious activity if you ask me. Anyway, this place isn't 1 star at all, more like 4 or 5, but I've given it 5 in order to balance out the ridiculous previous rating. We couldn't book a table in the restaurant area as it was fully booked but were informed that if we arrived close to opening that we would get a table. We got there bang on 12 and were lucky that we did as by half past the place was packed out, a reassuring sign. We shared starters between couples, all were very good and all under £5 - squid salad, baked camembert and nachos. All 6 of us had a beef roast which is well priced at £9.95 and comes with all of the trimmings, all cooked expertly. We had coffees and desserts and a few rounds of beers/soft drinks and the bill came to £23 a head which is great value. Above and beyond the quality of the food and the price though is the attentive and polite service. Outstanding.
