Best pub in Grays to eat and drink outside. Standard pub fare, but well done and service with a smile.

Horrific experience at this establishment, I was visiting from the US and after a nice walk around…read morethe local park Tilbury Fort, decides to go to this place for a drink with my parents. My dad went in to see if we could get some food unfortunately they didn't start serving till 6pm first of all what kind of place doesn't serve food all day so weird !!! And as it's only 5pm we would have had to wait an hour so I walked back out to tell my mom who was sitting at a table outside as I walk back in the pub to tell my dad she didn't want to sit in a rough old parking Lott for an hour waiting does some pub food, this woman pounced on me from behind the bar telling me I can't come in because I have my 2 small dogs with me, I inform her they are service dogs, does she know that that means and would she like to see there papers, she turns Into a psychopath screaming at me she doesn't know what that means. Doesn't care and I need to get out, because no dogs in the pub, when I repeat they are service dogs and show her the dogs papers she continues to yell at me like Peggy mitchel that she is the landlady and to "get outta my pub" wowwww okay! My poor dad is looking confused, the poor guy behind the bar who was super nice by the way and didn't say a word about my dogs when we first came in but was sweet and cheerful both stared on in horror as she screamed and continues to berate me about my dogs. By the way no one else was in the pub thank god to see this display of ignorance and appalling manners on her behalf, This bitch has no idea that I suffer from PTSD and anxiety which is why I have my dogs, When I tell her about the Disabled Equalities Act of 2010 which allows service dogs in establishments she says she doesn't care cos it's her pub. She then has the cheek to tell me she will bring the drinks out to me, which I reply to by saying "your kicking me out of your pub because I have a disability" and she says yes. So if you are disabled land have a wheel chair be prepared to sit outside as this landlady doesn't believe in disabilities which tbh in this day and age is shocking, but then again we are in tilbury which doesn't look like the gene pool is very wide. The inside of the pub has seen better days with its tacky ship memorabilia, the outside looks decent with its pretty flowers but didn't be lured in by the geraniums. The landlady is uneducated in the law and is extremely rude.

Right, although I'm on the Newcastle Elite Squad of Yelpers and very proud of what the Toon has to…read moreoffer, I think I may have found a place which would make me up-sticks tomorrow and move to Essex. Yep, seriously - Essex... I know! However, the Bell Inn at Horndon on the Hill is truly something else. Totally not what I was expecting to find a few miles from Lakeside shopping centre (which is work-related, the reason I found myself in this part of the country, just in case you were wondering...) The location is a 15th Century coaching inn overlooking the hills down to the Thames Estuary. As you go into the main pub area, which leads through to the restaurant, you step into an authentic English country pub atmosphere, low wood beams, open fire, numerous ales on tap (the local pale ale we had was excellent), random brass items on the wall, but all done properly and not in the faux manner you get in some pubs. What really sets this place apart is the food. Wowser, this was superb. When we mentioned to colleagues that we were going here, everyone said we would not be disappointed and they were not wrong. The menu changes regularly to reflect seasonal produce (a big tick in my book) and the quality of ingredients and level of cooking was top notch. Starter was English asparagus wrapped in parma ham served with the richest hollandaise I've had in a long time. The main was a breast of guinea-fowl, served with various veg, each individual item cooked to perfection. To finish was a dark chocolate cheesecake with hazlenut ice cream. Each course went down a treat, I was actually a little sorry to finish as it was that good. All served by very friendly and professional waiting staff, their attention to detail was second-to-none. You know when somewhere gets it right on the money, well this place has got it and then some. It comes as no surprise to learn that The Bell has won numerous industry awards including being on The Sunday Times Food List as one of the 10 best gastropubs in the UK. So if you ever, ever, ever find yourself 'dahn sahrf' anytime soon, get yourself along the A13 and make a reservation here. Oh and they also do accommodation here, sadly this was fully booked on the night of our visit. However, I'm back down to Lakeside next month and you know where I'll be staying this time...

An excellent dining room which is open on Mondays as well. It has never failed \to please…read more Adrian Winbow
