This is the cutest salon I have been to in a while. I love the atmosphere and I loved my stylist Missy who gave me the best cut and style. Also referred me to a new favorite leave in, instead of it's a ten, now using eleven! Which smells like fresh coconuts (which I kind of love compared to it's a ten so far). Still love it's a ten but I'm just getting the word out there because I had never heard of this product eleven! I also really loved that her hot tools were thermal protected and has a little timer that beeped depending on hair damage because my hair is so damaged right now. So really felt the love and well taken care of. Totally recommend this adorable spot no matter how far you are, my Elk Grovers, go! I followed Shane from the salon he was at in the city and I'm glad I did. His work is fantastic, the salon is adorable, the art is great and the vibe is perfect!! But I was fortunate enough to relocate to N. Cal myself about a year and a half ago and have been reunited with my hair affair! I hate to have to write this review but I joined Yelp JUST to write this: I have been going to this place for the last year and a half. I used to rave about this place to everyone - making my friends drive out from Davis to visit them. Sadly....I HAD THE WORST HAIR CUT EXPERIENCE EVER HERE YESTERDAY!!! Went in to get a trim. Acknowledging that there were split ends that needed to be taken care of, I agreed to cut an inch or two. I asked Shane to please please keep the length. I've been working to grow it out for over 2 years now. I took my glasses off, Shane cut away (in silence because he seemed to be in a bad mood). He finishes styling and I put my glasses on, and I was shocked. HE CUT 7 INCHES OFF MY HAIR!!! That is not a trim, that is a chop my friends. He gave me the worst hair cut of my life. If I wanted to chop my hair off, I would have asked for a particular style. Not only was it ridiculously short, it was not even well done. I. HATE. IT. I was so upset that I went back to tell him, and he was defensive!!! Telling me he didn't cut more than he said he would. Well, it's too late buddy. I'm never ever ever going to return there, and I will never recommend Shane to anyone ever again. On the other hand, I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because Joe gave me a great haircut the time before last. If I decide to return there, I will only go to Joe because not only does he actually listen to you and work within what you are comfortable, but he does a good job and he is pleasant to be around. I can't believe that I have not written a review for this wonderful business in the nine months that I have been going there. I can only review Shane & Joe since they have both cut my hair. I moved to the area three years ago, after seven years in the Bay Area. Eventually, it became apparent that I could no longer go all the way back to my former salon. I began my search for a salon where I felt both comfortable and welcomed, and a stylist who provided professional & personal service. I tried out numerous salons and stylists in Sacramento, Davis and Woodland. Eventually, I found a stylist who was "alright" and whose work was generally acceptable. Last December, I desperately needed a cut and my stylist was not returning my texts. I had a date the night of my birthday and I badly needed a haircut so I called the salon where she worked and no one answered...that was enough for me. I turned to my trusty Yelp community and looked for salons in Woodland since I had just moved had just moved here a week before from Davis. I found Roots and although there was only one review at that time, I called the salon, asked if I could come in for a cut, and Joe told me I could come right then. I walked the few short blocks from my house to Roots and thought I had been transported back to the City. A beautifully decorated salon that could easily have been in most-any neighborhood in San Francisco welcomed me. Both Shane and Joe were available, but Shane cut my hair because he specializes in wavy & curly hair. I can't possibly say enough about the guys at Roots. They are dedicated to the local community and providing their clients with amazing service at VERY reasonable prices. The bottom-line is that I will recommend you cheat on your current stylist, just once, and give the guys at Roots a shot. I have sent several friends, colleagues and family members to see Shane and Joe and everyone has only wonderful things to say. Shane and Joe have my highest recommendation. WOW, I cannot believe how fast time flies, its been over 2 years since I've been going to see Shane and Joe at Roots Hair Salon, and I'm still driving all the way from SF to get my hair cut and colored by the magnificent duo of Shane and Joe! And as a 2 year customer of Roots, and a 6 year customer of Shane's (which might I add also includes my mother who has also been seeing Shane for approximately 5 1/2 years as well and joins me for the monthly trek up north) I've learned quite a few things when it comes to doing hair. For example, I've learned that the reason I go to a salon is so that a creme bleach is used to highlight my hair, not peroxide. I've also learned that the bleach and colors are foiled so that they don't even touch your head, thus eliminating any possibility of a burn. I've also learned that it's generally not a good practice to try and match my hairstyles in old photos because I've learned those hairstyles went out of style for a reason, and I prefer to stay ahead of or create new trends; which is why I continue to drive 1.5 hours north once a month to see Shane and Joe. I've also learned that Yelp users who's average rating for all their posts doesn't exceed 2 stars, is likely impossible to please, and will most likely not be taken seriously by anyone who takes the time to read their profile, of which has no compliments, and no friends... which might be why this person is unhappy with everyone he/she encounters in the service industry in the first place. Take it from a credible customer who's been having his hair done professionally for a very long time... if you know what you want, your hair is in the proper condition for the process, and you have realistic expectations; then you will be more than satisfied when you leave Roots. read more

Finding a highly trained, gifted hairdresser is akin to winning the lottery in terms of the odds, and pay out! I have done hair off and on for decades and I have been regularly disappointed with the general lack of talent permeating the salon industry these days! That said, My Cher bear has been going to the Roots Salon on Main Street here in Woodland, CA for several months now, so I thought it appropriate to finally write a review, now that I have been able to observe the consistency of their work. First and foremost; The work done here is impeccable! Cher comes out of her appointments looking fabulous! This is attributable to a couple things. 1) Theses guys have a lot of experience, like some 20 years 2) Unlike younger, less mature stylists, Cheri's operator (Shane) is seemingly/obviously more interested in what she wants, as opposed to pushing his own style agenda! This shows a customer oriented, mature and confident approach to the craft! So many younger, less experienced, less mature cosmetologists seem to be locked into their own wants and desires. This usually translates in to inappropriate styling decisions for a client's individual NEEDS! 3) The art and science of subtlety is in full practice here at Roots. Cheri comes out looking natural, and, well, almost as if she hadn't even been to the salon. Being able to provide a client with a subtle, natural look is a gift too few hairdressers posses anymore. Too often in the past, Cher left the salon looking like artistic anarchy gone wrong. Shane does a marvelous job of using hair to highlight her natural beauty rather than making her hair the overwhelming center of attention! Combing significant education, experience, professionalism and a client oriented attitude has lead me to give Roots and Shane an all encompassing thumbs up! If you are in Woodland, there shouldn't even be a question about giving Roots a try! If you're in Sacramento or a surrounding area, it's worth the commute to give Roots a try! read more

I first want to say that I am hair phobic and have had the same stylist since I was in like 8th grade. I recently moved to Woodland and was faced with either driving down to Turlock for my hair color needs or finding someone who could handle my mane! I don't remember how I found Roots, I probably just drove by and then called in to get an estimate. I was basically trying to go from very dark black to more my natural medium brown without cutting my hair at all.....not an easy feat! Shane was soo great to work with. He isn't intimidating and he really went out of his way to make me feel comfortable about the procedure and make sure we were on the same page about what I was looking for.Not only did he do a great job listening to what I wanted, but he also gave me a discounted price on my second lightening procedure as the first did not get us to the desired results. That kind of customer service is hard to find! I can tell he really really knows his stuff! So grateful I found this place in Woodland. Reasonable prices! GREAT quality, calm and stylish salon. I'm giving Shane another plug- I'm in the process of moving and absolutely HATE to leave Shane and have to find a new stylist (in another state). I saw him the last possible day I could before my move. Shane has always done a fantastic job on my hair and introduced me to a wonderful new little styling product that I'm hooked on (and he never did a sales pitch to me- I asked about it)- Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Nourishing Styling Treatment (GET IT, it's wonderful). Naturally curly hair can be difficult to work with and Shane's always done a beautiful blow-out with beautiful big curls for me after he cuts my hair. I regularly get color and Shane is picky about when he will color my hair, careful not to do any damage and encourages me to use a good quality shampoo to make it healthier (without doing a sales pitch on his own products). I appreciate his care with my hair and following his recommendations and using the soy renewal, it's never looked better. Shane is also very good about taking your cue on chatter- if you chat, he'll chat easily with you. If you're quiet, he'll leave you be. No fake conversations here. A recent remodel of the place added beautiful new wood-look laminate flooring and a rearrange of the beautiful antiques they already had in place, and a fresh coat of paint that provides a lovely salon atmosphere for your visit. I'd give him more than 5 starts if yelp would allow. He's my all-time favorite stylist. This little gem in Woodland is WORTH A DRIVE! I'll miss you, Shane! read more

I usually ask him what length, style, and highlight color would look best on me. He always has great advice, and I always listen to his suggestions. My hair ALWAYS turns out great! I've been here several times, and I've always been satisfied with my haircut. The first time I came here, it was to fix up my hair after it had been messed up by another salon. Joe did a great job, and was very meticulous and attentive to my hair. He always explains what he's doing, and gives styling tips afterward without being pushy about selling products. I've never had my hair cut by Shane, so I can't say anything about him, but Joe is great. Their prices are very good given the quality of the haircuts, and they're always willing to adjust your hair a bit a few days later if you're not happy with it. The salon itself is very clean, well-decorated, and they even provide you with water if you need it. Give this place a shot! I don't think you'll regret it. read more

I used the Yelp reviews to help me find a hairdresser in the area. At first I thought there was no way all these reviews could be true, but I am pleased to say that they are. In fact, the service was so good, I opened a Yelp account just so I could confirm the other ratings. What I liked most about working with Shain is that he LISTENED to me AND still had input. I can't tell you how many times I go to hairdressers and either they don't listen to me and just do what they want or can't offer me any help when I ask their opinion. They'll just give me that blank look and say, "well, what do you want?" I usually go to Aveda salons as I move around quite a bit and they seem the least risky salons, albeit more expensive salons, to go to. I am a tricky customer as I love red hair and red can be difficult to do as I've discovered. So long as I live within 100 miles of Woodland, I will not be going anywhere else for my hair. read more

I could kick myself. I was traveling 1-1/2 hours to have my hair cut and colored when I could have had my hair done by Shane right here in town. So glad I found him (thanks Yelp!). Shane always takes time to discuss how the last cut worked for me. No complaints here! My hair always looks healthy, full of shine and expertly colored and styled. Shane is also the first hairstylist to send me out of the salon with dry hair. I have thick hair and previous stylists have lost patience with drying it. Well my schedule got so busy, Folsom was no longer an option. So I asked around and kept getting the same response.."Shane at Roots" so I called and made an appointment. I LOVE Shane and what he does with my hair. My color...the cut..he works wonders. The shop is very charming and Shane is easy to talk with..I enjoy his dry humor. If you go to HIGH PRICED blah salons in Davis rather than venturing out 15 minutes down 113 to Roots, you are totally missing out! Joe and Shane bring SF talent, style, and vision to that tiny little town. They are a masterful, young, hip, and solid stylists. TWO THUMBS UP! I'm definitely going back for color, cut, and blow dry as soon as I need it. :) On this visit: I went back to Roots, after getting my hair masterfully straightened there a few months ago (review below), to get my hair colored. I honestly didn't have a clear idea about what I really wanted. I told Joe and after some brainstorming, he really found an AWESOME color. He honestly read my mind with the color chose, while I had no clue myself, and then executed it brilliantly! I love it! It's so rich and lustrous! I was worried it would be too dark or red and then go all orange but NO! It's like dark chocolate with hints of cinnamon! PLUS he got rid of these ugly baby hairs I've had on the back of my neck since I was little! He did it with such expertise! I was worried that it would look shaved and I would have to shave it, but NO - he "feather razored" it and it STILL looks great weeks later! GO CHECK THEM OUT! Absolutely wonderful experience! I initially had my haircut by Katherine, and was NOT happy to say the least, but luckily a friend of mine was a roots client and convinced me to contact Joe and Shane (they co-own the place with Katherine). Joe couldn't have been more apologetic and asked me to come back and have Shane re-cut my hair at no charge. I am soooo glad I did because Shane is a phenomenal stylist. I later found out that several other friends had had a terrible experience with Katherine also. So, one would be crazy not to go to Roots salon because you get an amazing cut at an affordable price; just make sure that when you call you ask for either Joe or Shane, NOT Katherine! Roots is a wonderful salon and Shane is an excellent stylist. He is very knowledgeable and professional and is sincere about satisfying his customers. Random strangers have walked up to me to compliment me on my haircut and color. My mom now drives all the way from Sacramento to get her hair done by Shane.
