My Update. It has been almost a year since I received my cut and highlights from Roots. I have to say; I have never had a cut that could go so long without maintenance. Just 2 weeks ago I needed a trim. (I do not live on the Cape) so I was not able to go back to roots. In saying that, my cut was minimal for maintenance and the stylist remarked how well my hair looked for not being cut in over 10 months. I would have to agree. I also have to remark on how well the highlights that Genevieve game me grew out. It was so natural, that I have not done any lightening since I was at ROOTS. As my hair grew, the highlights softened and just faded so naturally, as if it was lightened by the summer sun. My hair is in amazing shape and stylish. I will say again; this salon is NOT for a person that wants a fast and boring $30.00 cut and dry. They take their time and give you a cut to meet your styling needs/requirements. I come to the cape every summer but this year, I had to come earlier for a funeral (which meant I didn't have time to see my usual hair dresser before heading north)... not only did Lenny (the owner) call in a hairdresser for me (Amanda) but Amanda gave me one of the best haircuts/colors I've had in years! Before I left NYC, I used to go to very high end salons...Amanda could give those guys a run for their money! Cannot recommend Roots enough and I've already made a follow up appt for before I leave. I went to Roots to get single processes and/or highlights for about two years while I was living on the cape. I never had a bad experience, in fact, it was always a great experience. Really relaxing and lovely. Lenny, the owner, feeds the birds outside. So, I would look out the window at the birds while my hair was processing. Or read a magazine. It was always a lovely, relaxing experience and I miss it alot. I moved because of the pandemic so I'm 200+ miles away now. I honestly don't understand the viciousness behind some of these reviews. I don't have to share someone's political views to appreciate their talents. This is a small business and they rely on good reviews to get new clients. Also, its not a wall of political memorabilia. Lenny is very much into the organic hair movement and he does have letters from various presidents because of his work with that. And, on the importance on the education of stylists. Not only did I never have a bad experience at Roots, I never saw anyone else have a bad experience while I was there. In fact, women would often pop in and say how happy they were with their hair, or that they had brought their mother there and she was happy, etc. etc. Again, I was going at least once a month for two years or so. I saw alot. None of it was staged. All of it was good. I never felt that I was overcharged. Highlights aren't cheap, so I would get them intermittently and know exactly how much I was being charged. Asking ahead of time saves sticker shock. It seems very bitter to me to not ask how much one is being charged, get a treatment, and then write a bad review because one feels that they have been overcharged even though whatever treatment was done was good. I guess that makes some people feel powerful? If so, its a sad statement. This is an organic salon. Lenny, the owner, knows his stuff. Organic can cost more than not organic. But even so, it was never that expensive for me. In fact, I paid less at Roots for an organic single process than I do now for a non-organic one at my new location. read more

I went to Roots and the staff was very nice until they charged me $160 for a color treatment. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and sent my mom to them and they charged her $500 for a cut and color... and no it didn't come with a house. I have been going to Roots for over 10 years ! First Lenny now Genevieve cuts my hair and highlights it. It is very expensive but you will soon learn that no one does a better job highlighting or cutting hair. I have been to NYC, Atlanta, New Jersey, Boston and I have not gotten the cut or highlight I get at Roots. Genevieve was taught by the Best, and that was Lenny, the owner . Genevieve has a gift . Went for a hair cut (short hair) and highlights. No prices listed anywhere in the salon. Lenny (owner) did the cut and charged me extra because he said he was the owner (so what!). Then came the highlights. The bill came up to $440. !!!! That's right . . $440. and he told me they don't accept credit cards or checks. Cash only??? What kind of business are you running here? So off to the bank to get them their money and he actually asked if I wanted to add on a tip. I told him my tip was gonna be a review to warn other people not to go there. I looked like I had a bowl put on my head and he cut around it - just awful. I was the only customer there so I guess they had to charge me big bucks to make up for the lack of customers. December..2021...Would love to give a fantastic review to the hair salon I frequent the last 3 years...It is Roots Organic hair salon in Marstons Mills owned by Lenny Holtzman..and Genny and Amanda..all exquisite hair care professionals..Lenny started out in Europe doing artistic hair design..along with friend the late Paul Mitchell...Moved to New York and styled Lee Radizwills hair..Jackie Kennedys...Opened up 2 salons in Boston on Newbury St..and Cambridge...Ethel Kennedy learned of his salons and requested him to do Maria Shriver's wedding..Caroline Kennedy's wedding..Joan Kennedys hair, along with the rest of the Kennedys haircare needs and their friends...Lenny also tended to Melania Trump's hair care needs at a fundraiser in Nantucket, Ma..In fact Pres. I've been going to Genny for 3 years now and she does a wonderful job on my color. The fact that they are organic is a big deal for me. I started swelling up from the other hair dye . It was awful. Now with these products it has changed my life and with Genny taking such good care of my hair it has transformed. I always get so many compliments. So, the only time I've gone to Roots was in late 2018, and my experience was memorably jarring at best, but I'm only writing now because this place came up in a conversation of holistic options on Cape and I want to warn others of my experience. Firstly, I called about their organic manicure services as a last minute splurge for my birthday for the following day. The owner at first laughed at me and told me I clearly didn't know anything about how busy salons are, so I said ok, thank you, and hung up. He called back in a huff and said he could adjust the schedule to get me in, I thanked him again. When I showed up, I am greeted by an empty salon and an ENORMOUS wall of Trump memorabilia, pictures of the owner with Trump, certificates of being a loyal donor, blah blah blah. Truly, I wish I had walked out at that moment. But, it was my birthday, and I felt awkward to leave now. So, I go searching for an employee. Eventually, I find Lenny (the owner) come around a corner, in the middle of eating his lunch, kinda annoyed that I'm there and he directs me to a tiny upright chair in the back of the salon to wait for the manicurist. She gets there about 15 minutes later, and works very hard to give a nice manipedi, and it is... fine. (Chips literally the next day, but fine. She herself was very sweet.) During my manipedi, the hair stylist is working on someone with the most nervous and pesty of little dogs running all over the place, and the owner is overbearingly interrupting everyone with whatever news article he's reading at that moment and being flippantly misogynistic to his all-female staff and clientele. Overall, not relaxing, not comfortable, not a good manicure, over $100 before tip, and a striking reminder that you are helping this rude man support a megalomaniac with his political donations. Went to Lenny hoping to have a cut that would bring out my curls more and a low maintenance no need to dry cut. He did as I hoped and I love it. He didn't push any products and explained why he was doing what he did. I think he's a hair artist and you have to be prepared to let go of perhaps your old tired ways of doing things. Today I got my haircut by Genevieve. She was friendly and very attune to my needs. A great conversationalist as we'll. I just liked the idea of their salon being purely organic. It means something to me that they value quality, as do I. My hair ended up looking great, and exactly what I had envisioned before going in. Genevieve is a wonderful stylist. The owner, Lenny H, has sent me more than 20 harassing messages on Yelp in the last two weeks alone, calling me all kinds of names and threatening to share my personal information. I reported him to Yelp, because this behavior is uncalled for. I spoke openly and honestly about the cut I received, and even noted that I would have gone back for another cut had he responded in a normal and customer centric fashion, offering to make it right. I'm not sure why he feels the need to insult a customer rather than try to work with me to fix the situation. At this point, I will never step foot in his salon again. FYI, my cut was in June 2015 and my last update was December 2015, but the harassing messages he sent me were November 2016 and again now in June and July 2017. Even if he was the best stylist ever, I would never want to work with someone who treats people the way he does. read more

I'm a native of Cape Cod. I currently live in Florida. During my visit back home, I found Roots Organic Salon by word of mouth. While getting my hair done by Genny, I thought I was going to have a break down, as the owner of the Salon, Lenny, was non stop talking and gossiping and repeating himself about I don't know what because I was trying to tune him out while I was trying to relax and enjoy the service. I felt like the room was shaking. The man just would not shut up! He was shouting at people in the salon and kept on pushing for his clients to write a review. He must have asked me 5 times to write a review on his website. I wanted to vomit, literally. He spoke about the Kennedy family and him doing somebody's wedding. He must have repeated himself several times. For the amount of money they charge at this place, and the neurotic energy, I would never step foot in this place again. He was shouting at his help as if she was one of his slaves. My nerves were shot being in this place. This is the only organic salon on cape cod and, perhaps, the products are organic, but the environment is toxic. Enter with caution. Don't believe everything you hear from this man. Initially I was so impressed that a professional would offer an hour of their time for consultation. Unfortunately, I now believe the reason that time is available is because there are a few repeat customers, if many at all. I walked in with a style that needed a trim and some minor adjustments. After years of cuts too short with too many layers I nearly had my hair at a length I enjoyed. I left with what someone referred to as "a Bob" and shy $75!!! read more

I am so glad I found the Roots Organic Hair Salon and its wonderful owner, Lenny! My regular stylist left the area so I searched online for a new salon and found Roots. The organic products were a big draw for me and I love all the products I now use. My hair is soft and shiny and never like it's been over-treated by more harsh chemicals. I thought I had a decent haircut, but after Lenny worked his magic I realized how a really great cut should just fall naturally and look wonderful as it grows "in" not "out". I have been going to Lenny for about a year now. I don't have to use products as much as I once did and never use velcro rollers anymore. I rarely use a hair dryer anymore which is much better for your hair. I am very pleased with the natural color and style. Just like any other haircut it takes some time to adjust. I only have to go once every 3 - 4 months not every 5 weeks like I once did. I am a mother of three and this wash and wear style works very well for me. read more

I tried Gen for the first time and she suggested a brand new cut. I went for it and walked out a very happy customer because she added style, volume and I can still tie my hair back. My hair just feels healthier. I then booked a (very long) app't for highlights, again with Gen. She used a a very gentle, organic formula and my hair looks great -- truly some of the best highlights in my life. I like Len and Gen's approach. It is more expensive than average haircut or highlights, but I do feel it's worth every penny, and I wish they would start taking debit/credit cards. I found Roots a few years ago while searching for an organic salon. I had no idea I'd meet a stylist who would give me the best cut of my life. I let Lenny take the lead and evaluate my hair and then give me one of his signature cuts. He created waves and body that weren't there before and gifted me with a cut that lasts a year. Thank goodness the cuts at Roots last because these days Roots is a plane ride away for me. went to Roots yesterday for an appointment with Len. After being kept waiting for nearly a half hour, (Len was only one working) we started to discuss how I wanted to have my hair cut - but Len wouldn't listen to me but kept insisting that with his cut I wouldn't need rollers (haven't used in 5 years since I cut my hair short) and his cut was the only way to go. His cut looks like the early Beetles or the never popular "bowl on the head cut". He was totally unwilling to listen to me but kept insisting I had beauty school haircut "Short 101" and he needed 5 years (!!!!) of doing my hair to correct it~ So, I got up and left - so if you go see him be prepared for doing your hair his way.... read more

This man is a egotistical, unprofessional, fraud!!!! I went on a recommendation and he butchered my hair. I had long,blond,thick,wavy hair,that only the most experienced of stylists can cut. I was last at Warren/Tricomi at the Plaza in New York City for a beautiful haircut. Lenny took my hair from shoulder length on sides and long in the back, to a 80's man's Mullet. With bangs 1/2 inch across my forehead into the sides of my hairline. I was told this is even to short to get extensions. I am devastated,PLease, Please,Please do not fall for this man's lies.He NEVER said he was cutting my hair short. My hair is to thick and curly to wear short and if he knew what he was doing, after supposedly 50 years in the business, he would not have done that. After he was through he didn't even attempt to blow dry it!!!!! Don't ever use this fake. If i could sue him I would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
