My wife and I made our first trip to RF grill. We got there really early as advised by a friend. We each had the early bird special fish dinner. It was very good and with two sides it was plenty to eat. We had a very nice waitress who explained all of the specials. The draft beer price was not very expensive as I am use to back in NY. Ordered the half rack of ribs and fried shrimp combo. Ribs were dry and covered with too much sauce..almost to hide the fact that they were dry. But the server was great. And the beer was cold. Looking for a seafood place in largo on Yelp we saw this had good reviews. There was about 9 people in our party including toddlers. It is kid friendly. The decor is very southern Tropical. The main reason we chose this place was for the crab. My husband's family wanted some good crab since they don't live near the ocean. They said the crab was amazing they have Snow crab and Alaskan King Crab. The kids got a basket of nuggets and let me tell you that I wish that is what I had ordered. The chicken was so tender, the breading was crispy and light and perfectly seasoned. If I ever go back I might get that. My husband got the ribs and he said they were pretty good but not amazing. I got the shrimp dinner with the scampi not fried. They actually brought me fried and if I was in the mood for that I would have ate it. They quickly corrected the mistake. The shrimp scampi was good. It was normal shrimp scampi Nothing to rave about. My mother-in-law got a fish dinner and I can't remember the name but they were really nice, she didn't even say that the fish portion was small but the manager came by and brought her another piece. Again, without us saying anything. The service was really good. Everyone was friendly. I took a star because there was a fly on one of our sweet teas. I've had better ribs, but these were pretty delectable. The prices were also very reasonable. That was impressive. Similar food at similar restaurants probably cost $5-$6 more per plate. The one blemish: my friend found a fly in his sweet tea. Not a big deal but enough to knock it down a tick. MOOD: 3 stars. This place had a very southern feel to it. It was charming, but not my particular taste. To be fair, if it is going for that southern flair, it was well-done. I'm just not sure it was intentional. I could also do without the random fish paintings and sculptures everywhere. LOCATION: 5 stars. The location is right off of a major road and easy to get to. She was friendly, informative, patient with a large party, and even offered to take a picture for us. The wait time for food however was a different story. It took almost an hour for our food to come out. The restaurant was completely empty besides us so we should have had the kitchen's full attention. When in the Clearwater/Tampa/Largo area, you find an abundance of touristy seafood places and the food is generally expensive and often sub par. So when we were in the market for something different, and I found this place on Yelp, I was skeptical. Boy, was I wrong! Now, mind you, the kitschy, touristy decor is there for you to enjoy, but sit tight for the food, service and prices. In browsing the menu, my mom and I decided on the oysters rockefeller, the Roosterfish Fins (fried onion pieces) and both were terrific! Rockefeller would have been proud of the bubbling deliciousness of these gems. The cheese was just enough, the spinach still tasty and the oysters still succulent. Mmmm. The plate of Fins was huge and the sauce was addictive. On to the entree. Mom wasn't having anything else, but I had ordered the fried clam entree. Oh, la wee! I absolutely love good fried clams and hate the rubbery, gooey ones you find at so many other places. These were large, battered very lightly and cooked to perfection. My only regret? Having ordered so many apps I couldn't finish the clams. Our server was a doll, too. Don't you love it when a server actually looks you in the eye and smiles, genuinely? Bland frozen seafood. The reviews on this place make me seriously question if the chemicals people are eating haven't completely killed their taste buds. The two stars I did give was because the server was very nice. I ordered the Argentina red shrimp which had been doused in paprika and oils to make it look lobster-like, then overcooked until dry on the flat top. It was served with a frozen veggie medley and a few boiled red potatoes. The hush puppies were obviously frozen and had actually cooked on the outside before the inside was completelt done. My husband had the fish and chips which came with frozen corn on the cob, frozen fries. The fish had a greasy, heavy poorly seasoned batter that fell off the fish as you ate it. But my main course of Grouper Oscar (not cheap at $24) was dry and somewhat overcooked. The crab topping was dry as well. My corn on the cob was dried out, too. At least my water was moist. Very good food. Fresh Maine lobster were flown in for Wednesday lobster night. I had the steamed whole lobster and it was Great! Only thing is the tail could have been cut to make it easier to get the meat. They did provide crackers to crack the tail. I had a side salad and green beans. Generous portions. It's only been open for a few weeks and there were some mis steps but i am going to go back and try the fish. We started with a shrimp cocktail and cup of lobster bisque, i would not order either one of these again. The bisque was just ok, no lobster at all and the shrimp was buffet type quality. We both had the seasoned sirloin salad and it was dynamite! I could eat that on the daily. The menu stated feta cheese but there was none, it was grated parm. Nothing to lose my shit over but a mistake for sure. My second (they were two for one, great deal!) margarita was rimmed with sugar instead of salt. Stopped in for a late Sunday lunch (or early dinner). Our first time here, courtesy of Yelp. Sat out on the deck overlooking the pond. They have a menu just for 2-5:00 with most items 9.99 or less. I had the all you can eat fish and wife had the salmon blackened. Both were very good. Best of all they have margaritas for $1.50 and they are really good. Total bill with tax and tip with four cocktails was only $35. Our server was excellent too. Great food and great service. What more could you want? We'll be back! read more

Literally terrible. Not only was it overpriced, the lobster bisque had no lobster in it , was completely FULL of salt, when I asked to take it off the bill, it was put on there anyway. Well, this was our second visit (and may well be our last) to Roosterfish Grill. The whole experience was a comedy of errors and sub-par cuisine, in my opinion. Today was our waitresses first day, and that is o.k. She messed up our order, and our dishes came out about 15 minutes apart, so one of us waited while the other ate. Again, the is o.k., everyone has to have a first day and she will be great once she gets the hang of things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I didn't mark this experience at one star because of the waitress, but rather because of the food. The portion sizes were ridiculously small and my blackened Tilapia, was W A Y overcooked, and rubbery, but not really blackened. I didn't send it back, instead, I won't be rushing back to spend any more money there. The sides were silly small. Imagine fewer than 12 slivers of green beans ( slivers mind you) as a side, and about 1 / 4 ear of corn as the other side. Those two mini-sides and the very small, rubbery, non-blackened Tilapia pretty much spoiled me on this place. As they say, "your mileage may vary". You may end up loving the place, but for me, there are just so many higher quality, reliable, alternatives - I will choose to give this place a pass for a while.
