They've got chips to go with your beer.

Literally on the side of the road, there is limited parking beside the red barn. A beautiful spot and one of Nova Scotia's oldest wineries. Take a tour and do the tastings (3 for $5 or $8 depending on which you choose). The wine here is really good and the views are absolutely breathtaking out back. This is a nice place to pack a picnic and enjoy the incredible landscape or take a romantic walk through the vineyard and enjoy the day. Worth the trip for the view and the wine!

When my wife and I showed up on a Saturday afternoon, I was in luck because the scallops and fish combo was one of the daily specials, clocking in at just $21! My other half, not being a big seafood person, opted for a cheeseburger. Having arrived well after the main lunch crowd, we had our food in quick order and ate indoors, taking a break in their AC. My plate of brown, deep-fried goodness wasn't exactly a poster child for the Canada Food Guide, but it sure was good! The scallops had a light dusting of breading before hitting the fryer, and they were a perfect doneness - not too soft, and not at all rubbery. Being minimally adorned as they were, the sweetness of the scallops took its rightful spot at centre stage. The fish portion of the plate was comprised of three small filets of haddock, with a light breading on the exterior. I do prefer a crisp, airy beer batter, but the quality of the fish stole the show, as it flaked easily in solid chunks, but wasn't mushy or shredding to tiny bits. It was one of those times where the fish was so good that I only used the tartar sauce for my fries. Said fries were the standard, from-frozen fries that I think of as "diner fries", but they were good and crisp on the outside, with fluffy interiors, so they were about as good as they can be. On the upside, the fries acted as a delivery mechanism for one of the best tartar sauces I've ever had! Heavy on the minced pickle chunks, the tartar sauce had a sweetness to it that reminded me of mustard pickles (in the best possible way). When a place does a simple thing like this so well, it really make all the others that just do packets of Kraft look even worse. Although far from being the star of the show, my wife's cheeseburger was a solid, diner-style burger. Carla's was just what I was looking for while in Digby - down home style seafood that's well-executed without pretension.

Order at the counter and they bring it when ready, but it's not full service. We both got a fried scallop plate, served with fries, coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. The scallops were very large, absolutely fresh, and with a light batter. Generous portion size. The fries were decent and the tartar sauce was interesting, heavy on the pickles. Coleslaw light and tangy rather than creamy, but as usual in seafood platters, not enough. There's also fish&chips, shrimp, and a few things like burgers for non-seafood-lovers. And poutine! There's also a seafood market next door. Lots of options. Since we were traveling fresh fish wasn't needed but I did buy some dried salt cod; I can't seem to resist when I see it. Now I need to figure out what to do with it.

When we inquired, we were told that they were out, but that new ones would be in the case within the hour. We got distracted and headed back to get one in just under two hours and they were completely sold out again!! I also noticed when leaving the last time, some excellent looking hand crafted ice cream sandwiches in a freezer on the way out!

Samples are free and there's LOADS to try! They're known for the Apple Pie moonshine, but try the gin and the Winter Wandered liqueur. There's not much here you won't like but bring a designated driver because there's so much to try. They've got something for everyone and you'll love the beautiful and relaxing tasting room. If you're at the farmers market in Annapolis Royal, they're regulars so you can try a few things there as well but they don't have near the selection at the market as they do in the distillery. We wanted to…read morecompare them to what we have back home in the Niagara Region so we did a quick check and found our best bet was Annapolis Highland Vineyards. This was a very different experience then we are used to at home but it was very enjoyable and the wines were quite nice. We arrived and drove up the long driveway up to the main building. Its a nice little house and there is a large barn right there as well where they make the wine. We were greeted and brought into the house which is the store and tasting room. It is very nice inside the store, they have all their wines displayed and available along the walls and a tasting bar in the corner. They told us about their vineyard, how they make their wines and how their climate, as apposed to ours in Niagara, affects they types of wines the can make. It was all very interesting and informative. After that we started the tasting and they took us on a delicious tour through their whites down though there heavy reds. As we tasted each wine we were given a short description of the wine and where its grapes and fruits came from (all local). We were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked them, specifically the fruit wines. In the end I bought 3 bottles; Chardonnay, Mosaic and Highland Maple. Norm wanted to buy a case but unfortunately there was no room in the car so he settled for 6 bottles including several Highland Rhubarb. We always love to visit vineyards and this was no exception. Tastings are free of their cider, wine and cellos and there's lots to try from dry to VERY sweet. While we prefer more dry ciders and wines, there are some interesting choices here for folks who aren't necessarily wine drinkers. If wine isn't really your thing, this is likely a good place to start your intro. Sweeter wines and ciders which will appeal to the novice. Their white wine was quite nice even though we're not white wine drinkers. It's very much like a Tidal Bay (Nova Scotia's flagship wine) and really good chilled. The rhubarb wine was surprisingly refreshing and nice on a hot summer day. The shop has lots of selection but the cider in plastic bottles was quite a turn off and in poor taste so we opted to have a glass each on the patio which has a great view but could use some work. Classier furniture and maybe some umbrellas would spruce the place up a bit. The staff was super friendly and the grounds are really peaceful. A little bonus is the owners have a decent selection of thrift items for a really great price throughout the shop. You can find some really unique dinner and glassware to bring home. Overall, this place has some really great potential but just needs a bit more attention. The yellow house on the hill is still a great spot to stop in and we'll be sure to check back again.
