So after MANY years (check when my original review was written), I have finally decided to switch dentists, but it was job-related and has nothing to do with the wonderful service I've received from Dr. Claypool. She and her employees have always been great, from communication to treatment. Their office is very clean, and I have nothing to complain about even after all these years. From the front desk to the back rooms, everyone is very professional and friendly. Maricruz is very sweet and always does her best to accommodate schedule changes and calls to see if certain times work better for me, especially when it's sooner or at a time I had previously preferred. Dr. Claypool is fun, caring, kind, and brings a great energy to a normally dismal or daunting experience. I have referred several of my colleagues to her and all have had an excellent experience. If you are not sure about costs, the front desk folks will connect with your insurance and print everything out very clearly. She recommends an extra cleaning per year which is not mandatory and does cost extra but I can already tell is helping both my tooth and gum health. They have helped to prioritize which treatments to get to work with my insurance and even timing it to take advantage of what they will cover and at what time, which takes the hassle off of me. I get a bit jumpy and sensitive when it comes to my teeth and Dr. Claypool not only noticed and empathized with my anxiety but scheduled two different days to take care of two treatments which formerly were going to be the same appointment. They do great work at this office but it is unnecessarily expensive. I went to them in the spring of this year and had extensive dental work done. The service was great but I ended up paying around $3,000 ($2,000 out of pocket, $1,000 through insurance). I came back for a cleaning and they found a cavity which they said would cost $845 to fill. I went to get a second opinion and the total cost for the same treatment was $290. I will not go back to this office as I do not feel as though they were fair about pricing. As a side note, they do not typically offer payment plans, even though routine work at this office cost thousands. They recommend cleanings every 3-5 months, where as other dental offices recommend cleanings every 6 months. The staff was very friendly however I will not be returning. read more

Do not visit this dentist. Snake charming atmosphere that will hypnotize you into believing you need very expensive work when in reality you don't. I'm 39 years old and have very healthy, clean and straight white teeth. I went in for a cleaning and was immediately told I needed 12 sealants on my teeth. What?!? Being a nurse I trusted the Denstist and her expertise. However, it didn't feel right. I went in and got 6 teeth drilled into and sealed. She maxed out my dental insurance for the year. The remaining 6 teeth were to be paid for out of pocket. After feeling uneasy and realizing that in my entire life I'd only ever had 2 Tiny cavities I decided not to go back to her. What a crook!!! Went to this dentist about 13 years ago and looked her up to see if she is still in business as my wife and I still talk about the dentist who tried to do unnecessary cavity fillings on each of us. At the time I was in my 20s and unable to afford the thousands of dollars out of pocket they said would be required for the fillings on multiple teeth and luckily I didnt get the unnecessary dental work done. On my first few visits, this place seemed like a dream! She was friendly, gained my confidence... then after I went for a few cleanings, BAM!!! Claypool tells me I have 5 cavities and insisted I needed to get my mouth drilled immediately. I felt like I had to follow her advice, so I did it... I really wish I had gotten a second opinion. I had NEVER had a cavity before and I am obsessive about oral hygiene, so I was shocked and upset and wish I had just walked out without letting her drill my precious enamel. I learned my lesson and found another dentist (in the SAME exact building!). Claypool's office is nice, but please please if she suddenly recommends a bunch of expensive dental work, just get a quick second opinion somewhere. read more

Things a graduate student can't afford: $1000 ($600 after insurance) of completely unnecessary fillings, for nonexistent cavities. Let me say that again: NONEXISTENT cavities. Having seen a dentist six months earlier, I was a little suspicious. Since my father is a dentist and I've been around them all my life, I was a lot suspicious. Before scheduling the appointment for all the work, I scheduled an appointment for a second opinion with my old dentist (a friend of my father's) on my next trip east. He found no evidence of six of the cavities and put about $5 worth of sealant on the other two, which were not yet actually even cavities. Oh, and the cleaning the hygienist gave me wasn't even very good. My father has done better at home with no tools. What a waste of my money. Sure, it's a comfortable office - maybe if you're scared of dentists you need all that stuff? That's a plus, but not enough of one. read more

I was also a little suspicious (like others here) when I was told that I needed like, EIGHT fillings when I came here the first time. I take good care of my teeth, and my dentists have complimented me on that. I have had one filling before I came into this lady's office. Now I have nine -- and I'm not really sure I needed them. When I got the fillings, I felt like Dr. Claypool was rushing through the procedure -- she didn't etch the surfaces very well, and I asked her to do a little more work to make it less uncomfortable -- but she had another patient to attend to, so I had to wait an hour after she had stopped working on me. I'm definitely not convinced that I needed all those fillings -- and now, three months later, my teeth still get sensitive, which didn't happen before she drilled into them. read more

This is a business, not a friendly local dentist. That means the service is excellent in every way, the office is immaculately kept and the work is very professional. The downside is they do everything possible to get money out of you. Do not be surprised if previous dentists have said you are in good shape but this place recommends $500+ in work. They will find any possible thing to fix for you by blowing up pictures of "pre-cavities" and making it look like your tooth is about to decay. After my disastrous experience with Dr. Farzam several years ago, I was wary about choosing a new dentist, but there wasn't a lot of information out there about nearby dentists on my medical plan, so I just chose one out of a hat. I got lucky. I've never been treated so well at a dentist. The hygienist, Cindy, was extremely friendly and took the time to go over proper flossing and brushing technique with me. I got a very thorough cleaning, and special effort was made to make me feel comfortable -- she warmed up a buckwheat pillow to put under my neck in the examination chair, and I got a mint and a warm moist towel to clean up afterward along with my mouthwash. She used a camera to take pictures of my teeth, and I could watch on the monitor what was going on. Later, Dr. Claypool went over the pictures with me on the monitor. On my way out, they had a gift bag prepared for me with toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, etc. Everyone was very friendly and personable, and I walked away feeling like I got a really good cleaning and exam. UPDATE: After reading some other people's reviews on here, I was forced to re-evaluate my experience at this dentist and, unfortunately, found a lot of unsettling similarities with the bad reviews. I was told I needed a ton (6 I think) of fillings the first time I went here. I didn't think too much of it at the time because I hadn't seen a dentist in a couple years...but then again, I hadn't had any problems up to that point and I'd never had a cavity in my life. I had a friend go to this place and she had a similar experience. -WARNING- Do NOT go to this dentist's office!!!!!! It is absolutely the worst dentist ever!! You like the hot towels and spa-like atmosphere?? That's not the main reason why you go to see a dentist. Don't let these peripheral things fool you. I went to this Dr. Claypool's office to get a regular checkup because, like every other person here, she was in my Dental Insurance network. When I first went there, I was told that I had EIGHT cavities!! I was very suspicious and looking back, I wish I had gotten a second opinion. But they started treating my cavity from the first day and partially finished. Basically, what they told me was they started working on three cavities already so they had to finish this on my next visit, meaning, I had to come back. So, letting them using this "strategy" by partially finishing the job for each tooth, I ended up paying $1,300 there!!! Looking back, I think it was totall unnecessary that all the "cavities" had to be treated. I am not even sure all those cavities existed. :( Besides, they totally messed up one of my molar teeth and I still cannot chew well with that very molar tooth even after 1 year because it is still sensitive which it never was before!! (Basically, they not just rip you off, but also do their dental work horribly!!!!) What is worse is, every time I went there, the different dentists took care of me. I saw Dr. Claypool once, and never saw her again. That means I could not consult with Dr. Claypool about my previous treatment that I had with her. They could not explain AT ALL why I was charged certain amount for the treatment for each tooth putting into account insurance reimbursement. The lady sitting in the front desk could not explain anything to me. And she never called me back when I left the voice message regarding the bill. (In fact, she only called me and left a voice message to say, I had a current balance to "pay".) Was referred by a friend who likes shiny things and well her office is definitely shiny. I arrive at 8 AM for my first appointment, cleaning and exam. At 8:45 the doc isn't there yet. Finally, someone comes, and it's not Dr Claypool but some other dentist. I ask why I wasn't seeing Dr Claypool when my appointment is with her. The dentist (Dr Yasser I believe) says that she never was on the schedule for the day. So Dr Yasser does an exam, I've never hurt nor bled so much from just an exam. She says I need a deep cleaning and that all my fillings need to be replaced. Then I find out that the appointment is only for the X-rays/exam but the cleaning is going to be another day. I'm now late for work so, I head out. They want me to schedule appointments for everything and start talking about a payment plan for all the fillings. They even try to take my credit card. I'm completely pissed at this point and never going to come back. I decide to go back to my previous dentist and am told there's nothing wrong with my fillings. This practice is clearly about raping you for every penny you might generate in billings and are completely misleading. read more

I saw Dr. Claypool one time after looking for a doctor of color to support. First I will say the office is very nice and the staff are super friendly and accommodating. They do offer the lavender neck pillow and ask questions to get to know you personally. It felt really good in the beginning. When I saw the doctor, however, I feel like I was sized up for how much money she could get out of me. What do you do for a living? What industry is that? Oh, oil and gas, wow, very interesting. She went on to tell me I had very good insurance and it will work in my favor. I then saw a dental hygienist who she advised me I would need to make a separate appointment with to do a DEEP cleaning on all 4 areas of my mouth. Then she did my x-rays and assessment and brought me in her office for my treatment plan. She gave me a goodie bag and the print out of my treatment. Long story short, it was going to be almost $9K worth of work and my "great insurance" was going to cover a little more than $2K. WHAT? She wanted to put crowns on all my teeth, fill a bunch more, there were bridges and implants and I was dumbfounded. I had no issues with my teeth and what is worse, I had been seeing a dentist in Brentwood that had been working on replacing all my silver fillings and had completed the lower ones. She wanted to redo all of that. I felt like I had been with a very nice used car salesman. I seriously left that office and had to go to CPK for a drink and a talk with a close friend. I will never forget that experience. Following that visit, I sought out another very experienced dentist who assessed me and I didn't have any cavities or need all these crowns she spoke of, nor did I require deep cleanings. She's very nice but no way am I paying for her student loans or that plush office in Westwood on Wilshire Blvd with state of the art equipment. With my UCLA Grad student insurance, my check up was $13 earlier this week. Now my teeth are ready for my trip to DC for the inauguration of President OBAMA! My 6 month check up reminded me of why I love this place so much. They just moved into a slightly larger office on the 6th floor of the same building. it's just as lovely as before with the very pretty decor, but most importantly they're just as friendly and welcoming as ever. This time I noticed that all the staff are women (I love supporting women run enterprises.). Even the clientele was almost all women when I was there. Lavender wafted through the air as did the motown and old skool R&B tunes. I got into the chair and Cindy, my hygienist, was great just like last time. She's very gentle with the tartar scraping. Personally I prefer the manual scraping over the water pick method, which I got at other offices. I know it's faster with the water thing, but it huuuurrrrrts and it's way messy. Tartar and water all over my face... yuck! With all my bridges and implants, average hygienists have the worst time trying to floss my teeth after the polishing. I usually just tell them to give me the floss. Not Cindy... she's really good, even with the gloves on. Very impressive! And... with my dental history it's sooo easy for dentists to tell me I need services that I don't really need. Not with Dr. Claypool. My visit this time... $13. 45 minutes. No pain. Lovely neck pillow, warm wash cloth, bottle water... So nice. read more

I LOVE Dr. Claypool's office! The first time I went in there was almost 4 years ago. I hadn't been to a dentist in 2 years and I took generally good care of my teeth. Her diagnosis? NO cavities, but I needed I deep cleaning because I had 2 years of build-up from not getting my regular cleanings. Not a surprise. She didn't try to upsell me on anything. She did ask if I was interested in whitening. I said no and she never asked again. After the 2-session deep cleaning, everything's been great. I get my cleanings every 6 months and Dr. Claypool gives me an exam once a year. No pressure, no unnecessary charges. Just great service. And she's always so friendly and remembers me! The hygienists have always been great, too. They do a thorough job. And the office staff is so hospitable. I have absolutely no complaints. My husband started going here 2 years ago and he's been completely satisfied. As for the other reviews? The dental work here is very thorough and very preventative. So if they're suggesting something, it's probably because you could use it. And if you don't want them to do something? Say so. It's perfectly fine. read more

I'm a student at ucla that hadn't been to the dentist in a couple years due to not having insurance so I decided it was time to go again now that I had insurance to use. I went in by myself and got X-rays and they told me I had 4 cavities which I understood because I hadn't been in so long and I am bad at flossing I will admit. The doctor seemed to be very strict and honestly rude when telling me how I needed to take care of my teeth which obviously I know that some tough love is good but she seemed to be just rude. I have good insurance through school so when they brought me the bill that amassed over $1000 for these cavities I was shocked. My insurance would only cover $100 of the work and I was confused because my insurance should cover up to $1000 a year. I saw the outrageous prices and called my mother (Dr told me to) and my mom had a bad feeling so I left the appointment after the x rays. I later called my insurance and told them what had happened and they said that they were trying to do fillings that weren't covered by the insurance. Fillings that they wanted to charge $600 each for. I might be gullible at times but I knew that was a lot. Today I went to another dentist and they found more cavities that would amass to less than $300 that would be covered. She saw an innocent young girl and sized me up and thought "she has money" before trying to scam me! Such a shame honestly! Dr. Claypool's offers a heated shoulder wrap before they lean back your chair to take a closer at your chompers, a hot towel to wipe any stray polish off your mug before you go public and brown paper packages of dental care samples tied up in a pretty orange strings. I ended up waiting to do them since I was moving and went to a dentist in my new city who said I have no cavities. I was a patient for three years at this dental office and really enjoyed it. The facility is very clean, the staff is super friendly and the front desk was always really on top of it. PLUS they give you a warm lavender neck pillow which is such a nice touch! Dr. Claypool did routine cleanings in addition to cosmetic dentistry. About ten years ago I had bonding done on two teeth. Through the years the bonding had started to stain and became visibly darker than my natural teeth which really bothered me. Dr. Claypool and I discussed the options and costs up front, and we agreed veneers would be cheaper in the long run since they're more permanent. I also do not have dental insurance and am very appreciative with how understanding they are, and willing to work with me on payments. I don't see how ones mistake for not cancelling an appointment in the appropriate manner, could result in such a negative rating for a dental office that didn't get to work on that patient. You can't blame a business for sticking to their policy. This happens with ALL businesses. They have these policies for a reason and Dr. Claypool's office gets booked up pretty quickly.....so with these policies, they are protected in a sense. I am very aware of the cancellation policy. And I am very aware that in order to avoid cancellation fees, I must cancel in time......and if I sent out an email, you better believe I will follow up with a phone call if they do not respond promptly. But that is just me. I have gone there several times and actually have had work done several times. My wife is the one who sent me to Dr. Claypool's office, about 3 years ago or so...maybe longer....but since then, Ive enjoyed my experience there. I find the facility to be tranquil to say the least, with a very friendly staff. They always treat me kindly and it sort of is spa-like...something Id never expect from a Dentist. They are very thorough with their emails and follow up with my appointments and send reminders etc. They work with me. They work with my budget and the insurance to get me the work I need without killing my pocket. Luckily the insurance plan covers a lot of the bill, but as anyone would know, any medical/dental bill is going to be pricey. I don't like going to the dentist, but when I do go in, Dr. Claypool and her staff make me feel comfortable enough to not hate the dental experience. read more

I've been going to Dr. Claypoole for a few years and I think she's great. I see her regularly for teeth cleaning (including 2 deep cleaning sessions that I'm in the middle of) and also have had cavities filled and even had a tooth pulled and a bridge made. She was the best tooth puller ever! LOL. OK that part was just joking but she is very good at what she she does and has always been super friendly. Her staff is very nice and attentive too and I never feel like I'm just another patient. Her office in Westwood is quite nice with modern equipment such as digital x-rays, Ultrapiks (sp?) and a nice warm neck pillow, as well as a warm face towel at the end. Dr. Claypoole and her staff have worked with me on insurance and payment issues that crop up from time to time and are very easy to make payment arrangements with. I would recommend Dr. Claypoole without hesitation to anyone. Finding a good, trusted dentist is difficult. I found her through Yelp reviews (being able to sort the wheat from the chaff in Yelp reviews is something I'm good at), and I hope that others will too. read more

I never write reviews but when i saw this I knew i had to say something. I've been going to see Dr. Claypool for 7 years now and am surprised to see all these mixed reviews about her that are in stark contrast to my own experience. Never have i been told that I needed 9 fillings or anything crazy like that. In fact, on my last visit I was in and out with a clean bill of health and the one time i did need a filling, Dr. Claypool found another smaller one and took care of it free of charge! So this other review that she is out to rob you of your hard earn money is an exaggeration to say the least. I find Dr. Claypool kind and thorough. She loves her job and knows what she's doing. She'll take the time to explain to you how to properly care for your teeth and is more then happy to share with you her knowledge of what happens to your teeth and why certain procedures should be done and not ignored. Dr. Claypool is a very good dentist and a warm person. She's not an "aggressive" dentist, meaning she won't push you to re-do all the fillings - unless you really do need it. She really does care. Highly recommended. Looking at other reviews, I can see why some people objected to accounting/insurance issues - but it's not really handled by Dr. Claypool. When I had an outstanding balance issue I was surprised she took time from her busy schedule to discuss the issue with me and we worked it out nicely. So I would recommend always ask for an insurance pre-approval so that there are no insurance surprises, which is really not a dentists fault (but more of a systematic issue in US healthcare). read more

Warning I got crack on one of my crone, I called to her office and offered free consultation. I went there with my resent Xray from my tooth. First of all she wanted to get x ray from all teeth, I refused, but she insisted.But I mention that it is not necessary, because I got problem on one tooth and I need only to know how much it will cost me from my pocket because my insurance doesn't cover it. She check it and stated it will you cost $850. I asked if there is lower price way to fix it. the answer was negative. Even she said you have to me allow do complete X ray if i want one tooth be fixed. I accept it. Then she told me your teeth need deep cleaning. Finally I made an appointment. I decided to get second opinion, so I called another dentist and got appointment for free consultation. I went there this moralist dentist just looked at my X ray that I brought with me and just fix a sharpness on crone, and said there is no need to do anything else and you tooth is ok. I asked about deep cleaning, he stated there is no need for this. Believe it or not he didn't request a penny. Let me start out by saying that the staff in this office is great; they remember you by name, they offer great amenities, the office is clean and high-tech. But unfortunately, it doesn't make up for the lack of skill of the dentists. I have had a number of procedures there, seeing both Dr Claypool and another dentist in the office, and they have messed up each one. I've had to go back in multiple times for them to "fix it." I'm sure this review will go into the abyss, but I have to say what I have to say. I went to Dr. Claypool's office about a year and a half ago and was told I had about 6-8 "pre-cavities" that needed fillings. I have never had a cavity in my life so I was really surprised by this. They quoted me about $700 for the dental work (after my insurance) which threw me into a mild panic, and I avoided their incessant phone calls and e-mails to have the work done and avoided going to the dentist ever since! Scary. Well, I went to a new dentist today, finally, in Santa Monica. I had an amazing cleaning and x-rays. I sat with the dentist and had a good conversation with her in which she informed that I had one tiny cavity that doesn't even need to be bothered with, just checked on during my next cleaning. I needed NO FILLINGS. HOW can Dr. Claypool's office attempt to charge me $700 on fillings that I don't even need? The same thing also happened to a co-worker at the time and she actually paid to have the work done. She's had problems since, so I'm so glad I didn't have the work done. Be careful! read more

Please do not go to this dentist. She blatantly lies about the number of cavities and fillings you need. I was informed that I would need 9 FILLINGS. I did not have the money to take care of that. All the previous reviews are consistent with my experience. She is only out to rob you of your hard earned money! read more

Clean office, feels like a home! Didn't feel cold or sterile at all. I felt very welcomed here and would recommend her and her office to anyone I meet! Warm towels and spa like feel- who knew dentistry could be so not-dental like ! read more
