Food is great for the most part, I'm a big fan of their burritos and their breakfast burritos are some of the best I've ever had. With that being said, the service is why this rating is only 3 stars. I'm a regular as I like to go during my lunch hour and I live down the street. I go maybe 1-3 times a month. About 1 out of 4 times they'll get my order wrong and I'll have to go back to get it fixed. This last time I ordered my sandwich with no mayo and no sour cream, when I got home my sandwich had (what I believed was Mayo). Usually it's not a big deal but this last time the lady looked inside the sandwich and said there was no mayo when I could clearly see white dressing inside the sandwich. She insisted it was only butter used to toast the bread. After some more discussing she finally realized the white dressing was sour cream not mayo. I asked for neither... I wish they would just get my order right every time because it gets annoying having to use my whole lunch break just to GET my food. Hopefully they can find a better system for taking down order and getting them right the first time. read more

Food is ok. Service is terrible. Called to place an order at 7:45pm after seeing that they are open til 8pm. They said they were closed. I asked if they closed at 8pm and the gal said yes. So, I asked why they say they close at 8pm if they close at 7:45. When I had my restaurant. We would stay open a little longer if necessary so folks could get their orders in. Anyway, the gal spoke to the kitchen staff in spanish thinking I didn't speak spanish and she was mocking me and they told her to blow me off. The Food: Besides its being a market, they do have a hot food section in the back. This is like a deli style mexican joint (very typical in urban latino areas). They have a lot of types of meats ready to go and make your burrito, torta, taco etc on the spot. When I was there, it looked like they were catering for an event and had dozens of dozens of plated ready to go. I got their lengua (tongue) burrito with everything, basical rice beans salsa, cilantro and onions and ate it at home. It was de-cent! The Restaurant: Its not a restaurant, its a market, but they do have a few chairs and tables if youre just trying to sit down and eat. The Service: You go to the back of the market and order your food but you pay in the front (not to obvious for first timer). The dudes speak spanish and english and will make your burrito to your request. read more

It's hard to believe Romo's has gotten so many good reviews. Based on the raves I read here, I stopped in for lunch today and had possibly the worst burrito of my life. Either I came on a bad day, or people have a very strange notion of what good Mexican food is. When I first walked in, I got the sense of being in a real Mexican bodega. Romo's is primarily a grocery store, but you can order hot food in the back. I decided to go for the carne asada burrito since that was highly recommended by so many Yelp reviewers. The trouble began when the server asked me if I wanted "the works" on it. In my mind I was picturing peppers, onions, cilantro, guacamole, etc. and was about to say "yes", but I thought I'd play it safe and asked what "the works" meant. I was shocked to hear "rice, beans, cheese, sour cream ..." Huh? For a minute I lost my bearings and thought maybe I'd wandered into a Chipotle's by mistake. I said "no thank you" to all the above and asked "Do you think maybe you could just put some guac on that?" The response was disappointing - "Sorry, it doesn't come with that." I got a sinking feeling I was about to waste my lunch money. I didn't want to start haggling over ingredients so I ventured ahead and got the burrito with just the carne. I've lived down by the Mexican border and know that a well-prepared carne asada could hold its own and doesn't necessarily need dressing up. Unfortunately, this was not to be one of those carne asadas. Quite to the contrary, it was dry, chewy, and there were big chunks of gristle in every bite. Gak. After a couple of mouthfuls, I just didn't want any more. I thought for a minute about leaving the whole thing on the table for the flies that were buzzing around (another charming feature of Romo's), but then figured I might be able to salvage it at home by reheating it with lots of onions, peppers, chilies, garlic, spices, and avocado. I partially succeeded, but the dryness and gristle ultimately defeated my efforts. In the end it was only barely edible. I hate to judge a restaurant based on one bad experience, but Romo's seems to be clueless about real Mexican food. Their core ingredients are so inferior and badly prepared I can see why they want to smother everything in rice, beans, cheese, and sour cream. I guess if you like Chipotle's or Taco Bell style Mexican, this might work for you. But if you're looking for a delicious and authentic Mexican experience, I suggest you look elsewhere. read more

I consider myself a pretty big burrito connoisseur. I've been lucky to live in California for the majority of my life and have had some amazing burritos and some pretty trashy burritos. Romos, by far, is the GREATEST BURRITO I HAVE EVER ENJOYED. Seriously, it doesn't get much better than a Chile Verde and Chicken Fajitas burrito from Romos. The taste is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Everything tastes so fresh and delicious, any burrito you eat after this will seem poor in quality. I'm not kidding about that last part. I had to move away from Santa Maria, CA and up to Berkeley, CA for school and I cry myself to sleep sometimes because I can't find a replacement or even something close to Romo's burritos. The people that work here are so nice and down to earth. My gringo dad and I always like to stop in and they always welcome us with a friendly hello in spanish. Hearing him speak with the cooks will always be some of my favorite memories. Please stop in and give these wonderful people your business. This market has a deli in the back that is out of this world. We love the burritos (huge and yummy) and I especially love the carne fries although I get them with chicken or pork.
