If you're up in York and the weathers good go and take the kids to the Yorkshire Museum of Farming…read more Its fantastic value for money. I think my little family of 3 got in for about the same price as it cost one of us to get in to York Minster. Theres several parts to it with a small viking settlement, how farmings changed through the years, an old steam train, farm animals, the shop (so the kids can buy spend their pocket money) and a great cafe. Theres also a large grassed area with picnic tables. You can either take your own or buy something freshly made from the cafe. They have lovely home made cakes and all the food and drinks are really good value for money and very tasty indeed. I think we spent all morning here and then had lunch. It was a lovely warm day and my daughter played away on the monkey bars and talked to a pony (obviously it didn't talk back, but she was happy!) We just sat in the sunshine and relaxed. Theres lots of information about, but nothing is forced on you and you're left to wander round the site at your own pace and leisure. I've often seen the signs when Ive been up in the area and wondered what it was like. I'm glad I went and would go again.

They use it as an educational site during the week and it's always full of school parties dressed as Roman soldiers or viking villagers. If you go at the weekend, you may be lucky enough to see some of the historical re-enactors who live on the village for many weekends over the summer - everything from vikings, medieval, cowboys (the Roman fort can double as a wild west fort easily) or Spanish Civil War re-enactors trying to blow up the train. In December, they turn the viking village into Santa's village and all the staff dress up as elves - you can get the steam train up to the village and see the elves making Xmas presents in the longhouse / Xmas present factory. Definitely one to take your children to if you can. They do events throughout the year, all of which you'll find on their website - from spooky Halloween storytelling to learning about bees and beeking, all kinds of interesting stuff. I have to admit, I'm one of the re-enactors who live on the village occasionally over the summer months and so this isn't the most unbiased review, but I absolutely love this place.

It is big and yellow and was shut down for a year or so because of mis-management. A bit of the wall revolves because of 'art.' The outside is spoilt by metal walkways to save on cleaning costs. There is one big theatre, a smaller auditorium used for stand up gigs, a gym, a cinema and rehearsal rooms, as well as bars and restaurants. It is a little too big for the area but I think the guys have got their act together in terms of publicity so that people in the area who want to go know when stuff's on. It really comes alive during Stockton festival, when all the weird european street performers use it as a base. If you're in the area this is the best place to go for a night out.

The setting up stairs is excellent you can either reserve seats for larger groups or just turn up on the night. You have a choice of sitting at a table or sitting in stadium seating up the side. Only complaint I have is that the breaks between acts where you have time to go to the bar are too long - they are supposed to be 15 mins but are always at least 30 mins as the staff try and get people in from the bar area - you can bring your drinks into the show with you. By the end of the night people are getting a little rowdy as a lot of alcohol is consumed. But very good fun.
