Working our way through Yorkshire English Heritage. It's a small affair as old ruins go but still worth the visit. Do this first before you head to the high street for a pie. Not a bad place for the kids -- perhaps the biggest disappointment is that there's not much castle left! It's well-maintained, though, and the information on display is helpful (although perhaps some of it could be presented in a more child-friendly way). Admission is reasonably-priced and is gift-aid-able (which they could, perhaps, advertise more widely), and the views of Pickering and the surrounding countryside are definitely a plus (especially for fans of the steam railway). All in all, worth a visit, but don't plan on spending all day there -- there simply isn't enough of it to last that long. read more

Pickering Castle - Castles Near Me - Pickering, NYK

A great place to bring children in summer, lots of space to run. There are displays set out which show the castle in the 13th and 14th centres, there are also days when there are childrens activities - we did a trail there once. A lovely spot for a picnic. Have a wander around Pickering afterwards - lots of little independent shops and cafes, the North York Moors railway is also nearby. read more

I think one of the best things abot Pickering castle is looking up at it! Standing in the old market town and looking up to it it is a magnificent site.It is an earthwork castle and there is a lot of it.Kids love it and don't seem to mind the climb up and do a lot of exploring when they get there.There is a chapel with an exhibition in and there are kids activities. It does hold events too on occasions. One thing immediately apparent is how much care is taken of it and the good state it is in.Well worth a visit .as is Pickering read more
