The school staff reflect those that they serve. Many are people of color and have males of staff, which does not occur at all La Mesa-Spring Valley schools. We feel safe and seen in this school. Please tour it for yourself and talk with the staff and families that choose to come here. You will likely see something different than what's reflected in many of these reviews.

My son was at a 1st grade level on Math and Science half way through the school year. He was able to achieve 1st grade level language arts soon thereafter. Inside the Kinder class there were computer stations for the kids to practice their skills on successmaker and my son was always coming home and talking about the great things he learned in class. I enrolled my son to this school after referral from a close friend of mine who has her three children enrolled. The school is an amazing place and the staff all care so much about the kids and families. I highly recommend anyone looking for a kindergarten class for their child to consider Harriet Tubman. Also if your child is not doing well in their current school, Harriet Tubman cares and shows dedication to get your child back on track with programs to provide extra assistance for the children that need it. The school strongly supports the future of the children promoting college and developing science skills with 3rd graders building Lego robots. How awesome is that, right? Harriet Tubman is a welcoming environment that teaches the children beyond academics important life lessons like respect and integrity. I am proud to have my child be apart of this school.

The school does an excellent job of fostering a true love of learning. Once children develop this interest in learning, anything is possible. I also love that the school, like most progressive Waldorf schools, are redefining and modernizing Waldorf education to be more inclusive and diverse. While it's a work in progress, they are taking it seriously and working very hard - so they are in a moment of transition. Waldorf purists may not love this but it is necessary as an anti racist institution. Change is good! The focus on educating the whole child (head, heart, hands) has resulted in more well rounded and focused children for us. They love school! It's no wonder that so many educators send their kids here!

Mrs. Kang was the best second grade teacher ever! She was incredibly funny and welcoming. It's unfortunate that she retired. Mrs. Johnson was also a great teacher and and made the class an enjoyable place. Definitely recommend this elementary school!

The office staff are courteous and cheerful. The parents are down-to-earth and friendly. After our first week here, the kids decided they love this school and already started making new friends. We've attended two other elementary school in the past and my only regret is we didn't transfer sooner!

This is a smaller school, nestled off of Lake Murray Blvd. My son has been enrolled here for seven…read moreyears. There have been many changes over the years, but it has still managed to keep its community spirit. Due to budget cuts class sizes have gone up since he started here. They do a pretty good job though. I think it helps that it's a smaller campus. One thing I think they've done really well with is the Learning Center. Joe Malek does a tremendous job running it. He is so energetic and positive. Every school would be lucky to have a teacher like him. Maryland Ave has some really great support staff on campus. I think a lot of times people remember the teachers and might forget about all these other wonderful folks who make a huge difference in our children's lives everyday. I know early on I realized this because they ALL knew who my son was within the first few days of school. And it wasn't because he was a problem child, it was because they cared and made a point to get to know him even though he was very shy.
