Since I needed a break, I decided to go with a glass of their Cab Franc which they use Dry Creek gapes. For me, this hit the right notes. They have a regular food vendor on site and the prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, I wasn't hungry but if I was, I would have definitely ordered. I actually think of going back to this place. I could see being here during the week on a nice day, reading a book or doom scrolling with a glass of wine. There is something so zen about it that it's worth going back. Since I had a dog, I couldn't be inside, but check it out - it's really nice. That's where they make the magic.

The Lusu Cellars…read morebusiness has been self-funded for 12 years, and has explored a variety of wines over the years. David is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about winemaking, and we gladly listened as he guided us through various wines that are historical or explorations in viniculture and winemaking. While his Zinfandel, pinot grigio, and a sparkling red (can't remember the varietal) can be found at Berkeley Bowl, the wines he serves at his tasting room are his smaller-batch creative creations. So if you enjoy Lusu, you can get a chance to see more of his intimate work at the tasting room. Here are some of the highlights from our experience: 1. Skin-on sauvignon blanc: aka orange wine! This was cool to learn. Apparently pinot grigio and gewurztraminer are both red-skinned grapes, and it's only by slowly pressing these grapes that the wines are clear/white. If you press it normally, with skin on, you get orange wine. This evidently adds a little sourness, and Z., who loves sour beers, really liked this one. It almost just tastes like a sour beer. We gladly bought this one. 2. Mission varietal, chilled red: we bought this one too. A bit of history we learned: Mission grapes were brought by the Spaniards during their mission trips, and most of them were actually grown in the Canary islands, possibly because those islands were a good stopping point by ship. Nowadays Mission grapes are not nearly as popular, so this wine is a historical nod to the early days of California. This one is very easy drinking, good for a summer day when you are thinking rosé but want a little more savoriness. 3. Carignan: grape from Contra Costa. Lovely mouthy red to finish off the tasting. Clearly David can deal with all kinds of wines, from the lightest fumé sauvignon blanc to the bold Zinfandels and carignans. We also enjoyed David's blend of pinot blanc, pinot gris, and pinot noir (60%), which is an ode to his Portuguese roots. We had a great time getting treated to front-row seats of the thought process of a winemaker! We will be recommending this place for anyone who wants to drink nice wine and learn more about winemaking.

The 2007 Verve French Colombard - Domaine de Mirail was served chilled and was crisp and flavorful. It begged to have mussels steamed in it. At $12 a bottle I would have it with seafood on a regular basis. The 2005 Verve Columbia Valley Syrah was a very nice, complex wine made from grapes in Washington State. It was fruity but not overpowering. Richly flavored but not spicy or with too much tannin. Oh, and I was able to practice my french.

I bought a bottle of a pinot rose which I drank all by myself because it's mine, mine, all mine! Muah hahahaha! So...anyway, when I moved from Berkeley to SF I decided to get rid of my empty wine bottles so I had to go through them and take note of what they were. When I stumbled upon this one and remembered how good it was I decided to go online and order a case to be delivered to my new residence. Well, it wasn't listed online so I called the number on the bottle and got Mr. Harrington on the phone. It turns out he lives about a block away from my new place. I made an appointment with him and met him at his warehouse. I sampled some pinot noir, got a chance to chat with him and bought myself a case of that rose (as well as a bottle of pinot). If you get a chance to try his wine...do it! You won't be disappointed. Talking to him, I could tell he is really passionate about wine. He loves his pinot noir and it really shows in the wine he makes. He didn't seem irritated in the slightest by my random inane questions about the wine making process. In fact, he seemed to really enjoy talking about it...which, as I've said, really shows when you sample his wine.

He only produces Pinot Noir. Each wine is from a single vineyards from various sites from the Anderson Valley down to Chalone. The open house offered tastings of current releases, library wines, the yet to be released 2007s and barrel samples of the 2008s. I was surprised by the large amount of wines that were being offered and it more than made up for the $15 charge to enter. (The $15 was applicable to any purchase though). I favored the Wiley from Anderson Valley. (They're already sold out of the Iund). My friend favored the Wild Horse from Napa. And, we each left with a bottle. The winery is not generally open to the public so sign up for his mailing list to stay informed.

Each was serve chilled a bit but the flavors "blossomed" as the wine warmed some. My wife and I are committed to get the word out about FRFW; bringing friends and family with us to visit. This is a cozy place tucked away in a small back street, there is space for 2 tables and standing room inside as well as outside seating. There is also a ramp for wheel chairs. Plenty of parking. The flight has 4 pours and costs $25. The owner/pourer is very knowledgeable about the wines she makes and engaging. You get a small bowl of mixed nuts to go with the tasting. We were really excited to taste the wines and help support the small business owner but unfortunately the wines were not to our taste The lavender had a very strong smell and taste of lavender, almost like soap/lotion. The resident, 20 year old dog Fana was a cutie and very loving, added to the experience! She also offers a chocolate pairing and the bottles are beautifully designed. It is a small business, woman and black owned and everyone should try it out!

Vie Winery is a excellent tasting room to stop at during your journey. The indoor space is setup like that of a warehouse with a rustic and cozy feel. It's pretty spacious inside and also quite lively compared to the other tasting rooms on the Island. Vie shares an outdoor space with Sol Rouge Winery right next door. Their patio has a bocce ball court and a few chairs to lay out on white you're sipping on your wine. It's the perfect hangout spot on a warm summer day. Vie's tasting menu consists of 5 tastes of their current selection for $15. They specialize mainly in reds and red blends which is what they're known for. They did have one white wine on the menu which was a Roussane that I really didn't care for. It tasted like a beer which I found extremely odd. However, I was really impressed with their red blends. Their bottle prices are actually pretty reasonable, and if you don't want to purchase a bottle, you can always buy wine by the glass. Service from ". " was excellent! We cruised around & followed the breadcrumb trail of signs pointing to VIE. When in Rome, do as the Romans do! We pulled up right out front where a worker saw us come out of our car. She made eye contact with us, then immediately turned around & stormed off. Confused, we decided to walk further past some tables of people clearly enjoying themselves & we get up to her host table where she promptly told us "we're closed, this is a private party." No problem at all, just would've been nice to have a heads up before venturing all the way in. Disappointing since after we got back, friends & family had actually shared surprising good feedback from this place when they were there years ago.
