I'm not boasting when I say I'm a vintage aficionado. Living in East London it's difficult not to be. This is the home of a very particular retro-inspired aesthetic, fueled in no small part by the myriad vintage stores that line Brick Lane and the Shoreditch Triangle. Although I'm a big fan of Absolute Vintage's sister store, Blondie, the smaller Rokit shop on Brick Lane always came a close second. It used to stock a good selection of true vintage with gems including original Art Deco silk crepe kimonos and good quality vintage coats from the fiftes and sixties at reasonable prices. But recently something seems to have gone awry. The change is almost imperceptible but I sense that Rokit has a new buyer. This can be the only reason that its once faultless stock has ever so slightly gone down the metaphorical pan. Don't get me wrong, there is still the occasional unusual and beautiful vintage piece amongst the scratchy mohair jumpers and 70's polyester, but some of the prices - £200 for an acrylic 1920s housecoat?! - seem to be more inflated than an overvalued banker's bonus; and in the current climate this simply doesn't wash.

Rokit on Brick Lane is a great place to sniff out a good vintage bargain. The shop is split into two blocks so if you can't find anything in the first there's still hope a couple of doors down. Like the other Rokits in London they have great shoes and bags but this one seems to offer more cool coats and jackets than the other stores. They also have a few crazier styled clothes that would be hilarious for fancy dress; last time I was in there they had a good selection of 80s luminous all in one ski suits. The staff in here are friendly and the prices are always reasonable.

The more upmarket vintage clothing shop "Rokit "definitely has more picked out pieces and is much more expensive. Much more trend driven the windows are always really nicely styled and they often have choice pieces in the windows. Being Xmas and all they have good selection of sequins and gold in the window . Prices range from £100 for a boxy blue velvet length coat with jewelled buttons and £90.00 for a gold leather mini skirt and bat wing 80'S matching jacket (a sure party hit !!) Rokit always have nice bags and accessories sometimes shoes too although they are often small. Another Rokit staple is the 50's crinoline they always seem to have a great supply!

(Yes, I have been told that I need to reevaluate my priorities.) Beyond Retro is honestly the best thrift store I've ever walked into. It's tucked away on a side street just a stone's throw away from the bustling Brick Lane Market. My first impression was that the store was extremely well-organized and clean... like so clean that it could've matched the standards of a soulless corporate chain. But the clothing here was nowhere near as sterile as whatever you can find at your dime-a-dozen Zara. Every single item in here was high in quality and had its own vintage, retro character. Hands down, Beyond Retro has the most well curated, eclectic selection of clothing ever. A lot of thrift stores suffer from the musty, outdated '70s closet syndrome, where you'll have to do a godforsaken amount of digging to find that single diamond in the rough. That won't happen at Beyond Retro. I wish I could have had a shopping spree here, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the next plague.

A sprawling vintage emporium with more of an emphasis on clothing than its obvious rival, Absolute Vintage, Beyond Retro sells vintage from the twenties through eighties at very reasonable prices. Its friendly staff are a breath of fresh air; its resident cat adorable; its stock varied and good quality; and its pricing so right on you'd be forgiven for thinking it was run by a philanthropist. Particularly noteworthy is Beyond Retro's premium vintage section which has a beautiful selection of vintage silk chiffon prom dresses and twenties beaded shifts and its astonishing Kimono rail which will not disappoint. As the name suggests, Beyond Retro is more than polyester sixties frippery and faux-vintage rock t-shirts. This place is the real deal and vintage fanatics would be mad to pass it up.

As a gent, this presented a particularly problematic situation as most shops focus on ladies outfits. With time ticking on and having walked up and down Brick Lane looking for outfits in the usual suspects, I stumbled upon Levisons. Unlike its neighbours, Levisons focuses on vintage menswear from throughout the 20th century. Browsing the rails was made easy by handy tags indicating the era of the garment and the owner was also on hand to provide knowledgeable guidance. The clothes are not cheap (£100+ for a suit) but all appeared to be authentic and in good condition. Needless to say, Levisons kitted me out in everything I needed. While not necessarily super stylish, I could at least claim to have been authentic!

Described by its owners as a 'treasure trove of retro and mid-century objets d'art', Vintage Heaven sells everything from 1920s umbrella stands to antique scrabble tiles, fifties tea sets to sorbet coloured cake stands. Undoubtedly Mecca for the vintage obsessed, Vintage Heaven is crammed full of the kind of antiques you wish you could find at car boot sales; the kind of antique homewares that would undoubtedly add a certain je ne sais quoi to most people's invariably Ikea furnished abodes. For those with a little less to spend, Vintage Heaven sells ephemera such as forties postcards complete with the most charming images of models with their dogs. OK, they sound pretty inauspicious but I've covered my - strangely canine centric - fridge in them and at around 50p a pop this is affordable vintage. My next buy from Vintage Heaven will doubtless be one of their beautiful original Art Deco mirrors etched with a floral motif. A word of advice though: if you see something you like, buy it, Vintage Heaven has a refreshingly high turnover of stock and there's nothing worse than missing out on a true one-off.
